Padre Island is the longest remaining undeveloped stretch of barrier island in the world. It is well known as a wildlife refuge where there are not only a lot of resident birds, but it also an important stopover for migrating birds and wintering spot for certain northern birds.
Everything on Padre Island is affected by the wind and the sea. At left is an oak mott whose shape has been created by the prevailing wind.
