Saratov

It was in Saratov that we visited only real market on this trip. We were on our own in the market, not with the group. Of course I was taking pictures... Gil likes to interact with people, sometimes managing to use the few words he knows in the language. We were having a good time as were the people in the market. Then a policeman came in and started yammering at us. I don't remember if I understood anything, but I sure could tell he didn't like the picture taking. They can take your film, or even worse take your camera. Then some Russian ladies started gathering and arguing with the policeman. I know a bit of Russian and still remember the policeman saying "Sovietski" (Soviet, of course) and then they said it back with a very clear sneer. It was getting entertaining, BUT we had a boat to get to and we sure didn't want to get put in jail or lose the camera. So while the ladies and the policeman continued to argue, we snuck out the door...
