From Jim Hammond: In Laura Hammond's document, for example, I'm fairly certain that her claim of lineage prior to Job No. 1 is not right. I just haven't seen any documentary evidence to support it, and she didn't provide any. And probably when such documents are posted on the web, they should carry some such disclaimer that some of the claims are not supported by documentary evidence.
From Amy Gilreath: Just want to correct this one thing from Laura Hammond:
Samuel Hammond sold all his property including his household equipment - pots & pans, his mare, 29 head of hogs, etc and moved to NC in 1767. [See Fairfax Co., VA Deed Book G, p. 282, 22 Sept. 1767]. I've seen the latter date several times, but it is one day from her husband's death so I am suspicious becauseof that plus we also see other dates such as "in 1824" and "1848".
Her birth date is also the same year as her husband whereas in the DAR record it is 1797. - [S5195] Holtzclaw (Univ. of Richmond VA), Dr. B. C., Asburys of Virginia, 1961., I cannot find this book but it is quoted as above.

Description of Dickey Diaries on this website:
Below are several excerpts from the Diaries of Reverend John J. Dickey, a traveling Methodist minister who roamed southeastern Kentucky in the late 1800's in search of converts. Reverend Dickey was also a bit of an anthropologist and made a point of writing down the interviews he conducted with many of the elderly of the area. Their accounts recall the early days of the first Kentucky settlers and are quite colorful. They bring to life the language of the time, as well as the time itself, and reveal much about the attitudes and behavior of the people - our people!
Most of the interviews are strictly in the voice of the person being interviewed with occasional comments from Reverend Dickey found in brackets [ ]. However, this first piece is special as it is Dickey in his own words expressing his thoughts about the people and the community he has become a part of.
