James McCoun & Margaret Walker
By genealogy.com user June 23, 1999 at 12:00:06
Hello, Everyone of You!
I am the 4th grt granddaughter of James McCoun and Margaret Walker and I have James' family line back to Scotland. This is all researched and documented by a cousin, Maurie McCoun Klimcheck, who wrote 3 books on the McCouns and their kin.
First of all, there seems to be a lot of confusion about the name,"McCoun" our McCouns spelled their name early on,"Maccoun" which is the old Highland way of spelling it and they were Highlanders, connected to the Clan Campbell.
The first James McCoun we know of was James McCoun, who married Margaret Hamilton in Scotland in about the year 1624. James McCoun II, married Elizabeth Montgomery of Lainshire ca. 1658. This James was born ca. 1637 at Linlithgow, Scotland. He was 21 yrs of age. Elizabeth's age is unknown at this time. James McCoun I died in Northern Ireland 12 March 1706,hasving lived 5 yrs. beyond his 100th birthday! James McCoun III was 46 yrs. old unmarried when his grandfather died. His father, James McCoun II lost his life at the Battle of the Boyne.
Even by Scotch-Irish standards, James III was considered an old "Batcherlor" when he married his cousin, Mary Campbell of Loch Awe at 50 yrs. of age. The known children of James McCoun and Mary Campbell are: James McCoun IV, baptised 29 October 1716; Anne McCoun, baptised 7 April 1718;Susannah McCoun baptised 1722; John McCoun, baptised 1725.
James McCoun IV was a young man of about 25 yrs. when he sailed from Northern Ireland to America with William Adams in 1742,arriving at Norfolk, VA. April 1744, James McCoun married Margaret Walker "on Roanoke" and William Adams married her younger sister, Mary Walker. The following are their children: James McCoun Jr. b. 3-11-1745 VA, d. 1790 in KY.;Anne McCoun,b. 8-1-1746,d.1794 in Ky.;Samuel McCoun, b. 10-20-1748, VA, d. young in VA; Mary (Molly) McCoun b.8-13-1750, d. 7-29-1837 in Mo.;Susannah McCoun b. 4-7-1752, d. c.1790 KY.;John McCoun b. 3-28-1754 VA,d.Fall of 1826,KY;Jane McCoun, b. 5-1-1756 VA,d.2-25-1818 Ind.; Margaret(Peggy)McCoun,b.4-15-1758, VA;Elizabeth McCoun, b. 2-7-1761, d. bef. 4-26-1800 KY; Joseph McCoun, b. 2-19-1763 VA, d. 1781 in Ky. (Kidnapped on 6 Mar. 1781 by Shawnees; taken to encampment the the mouth of Mad River, just North of Springfield, Ohio, where he was later tied to a stake and burned to death, he was only 19 yrs. old.)
My line continues with Mary(Molly)McCoun, who married John McGee of the McAfee Party of the Kentucky frontier. John McGee's stone house is still standing and can be seen just off of the Jackson Pike, out of Harrodsburg, Kentucky, where John is buried.
I hope this helps clear up some of the confusion. There is another family who does spell it's name, McCown, but they are probably not related to the family of James McCoun and Margaret Walker.
Happy searching!
