Peter John Mann

M, #2784, b. 6 May 1780, d. 28 June 1847
Peter MANN 1780-1847 Ontario County, New York

Peter Mann (1780-1847), son of Peter Mann from Ireland and an unknown Chandler of German descent, was married to Sarah Lyons from New Jersey (1785-1860). Peter and Sarah, along with at least seven children and two other families, brothers of Peter, names unknown, left Ontario County, NY and sailed down the Ohio River on a flatboat in 1817. They stopped at Utica, Clark County, IN near the Ohio Falls. One brother went to Tennessee and the other to Illinois and they weren't heard from again. Peter stayed in the Clark County, IN area and had 5 more children. Children of Peter and Sarah born in NY and NJ were: Lewis Mann (1804-1882, see other entry); Sibie Ann Mann Gross(1806-1860), Failey Mann (1808-1880); Phoebie Mann (1810-1848); Peter Mann (1812-1895); John Mann (814-1895, see other entry); Elizabeth Mann (1816-1840). Children born in Indiana: Sarah Mann Summers Durwald (1819-1904); Bothier Mann Humphries (1821-1878); Squire Mann (1823-1844); Jesse Wallace Mann (1825-1884); and William Spencer mann (1827-1879).

Sarah Lyons

F, #2785, b. 10 December 1785, d. 26 August 1860
The more I think about Sarah Lyons, the more remarkable she becomes to me. I did a time line on her, putting down all known facts in chronological order and what emerges is this: Sarah, born in 1785, married at age 17 to Peter Mann. Her first child was born within the year and she regularly had another child every two years for the next 24 years for a total of 12 children. In 1817, she, her husband and 7 children ages 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, and 13 boarded a flatboat in New York and went down the Ohio River. They ended up in the Ohio Falls area of Clark Co., Indiana in 1818. We don't know how long the trip took or what hardships they endured, but other family stories have mentioned needing to travel at night to avoid Indians and pirates and the navigtional problems of sandbars, snags, and sickness, etc. Sarah didn't lose any children overboard or to sickness. After arriving in Indiana, they farmed and she had 5 more children. All children lived to adulthood and seemed to be successful in their own way, which says a lot about her parenting skills. We don't know anything about Peter except that he made all the shoes for his children, one pair a year which had to last the whole year. Sarah was known as a stern disciplinarian (see note under her husband Peter). She seems to have spent the last part of her life with her 11th child, Jesse Wallace Mann, according to an 1850 census record. (Judy Davenport Chun, gg granddaughter)

Thomas Anderson

M, #2794, b. 1753, d. 1835
From findagrave:
Thomas Anderson (1753-1935)
Rebecca McClure
Three Anderson brothers, Thomas (1753-1935) (great, great grandfather to Asher), Joseph, and Holbert, sailed from Scotland to the United States in approximately 1770. They settled in Rockbridge County, Virginia, near the Natural Bridge.
John David, son of John J. (1821), whose home was east of the Camp Ground Cemetery, remembered hearing his grandfather, Joseph (1791), son of Thomas, say that he had thrown many a stone over the Natural Bridge.
At the outbreak of the Revolutionary War the brothers enlisted and after the Battle of Guilford Courthouse 1781 in North Carolina, Holbert was never seen or heard from again.
While in his nineties, Thomas B. (1815), grandson of the first Thomas and son of Joseph (1791), remembered two statements made by his grandfather concerning the battle:
"We had the long barreled squirrel rifles and shot at very close range so that
If my rifle didn't bring down one of the enemy, it was because someone else's bullet hit him first because we were so close we couldn't miss."
"Our line had to open to go around a brush pile and we were shot down so fast we
were never able to close our ranks again."
Thomas and Joseph were farmers in Virginia until early 1800, when they emigrated to Boone County, Kentucky. Thomas B., speaking of his grandfather coming to Kentucky, said that he was a sort of Daniel Boone.
Thomas Anderson (1753-1835) was married to Rebecca McClure. At the time they emigrated to Boone County, Kentucky, they apparently had at least two children, Joseph (1791) nine years old and William (1795) four years old. They had several more children after moving to Kentucky.
Two lists of the children of Thomas Anderson and Rebecca McClure have been found. They are not identical. They are as follows:
1. Jane (twin) 1. Joseph
2. John (twin) 2. William
3. Joseph 3. Thomas
4. William 4. Holbert
5. Thomas 5. Rebecca
6. Margaret 6. Betsy Boyd
7. Polly 7. Polly (Penny)
8. Rebecca 8. Ann (McClure)
9. Hannah 9. Hannah
10. Elsie 10. Alsie
11. Betsy
12. James
Jane and John were twins supposedly born in Scotland. Jane died in infancy. John died at the age of 21.
Both lists agree that Hannah and Alsie were never married.
Little information is known about the children other than Joseph.

John McClure

M, #2798, b. 1725, d. May 1779
Note, re The McClure Clan in Our Haddon, McClure, Curry and allied families
I think John b1725 must be the child of Halbert McClure, as is in most trees, because of dates. If Halbert was born in 1684, a brother of his is not likely to be born in 1725.

MilitarySAR - Soldier Botetourt County, Virginia. McClure was nearly 50 when Indian depredations on the Virginia frontier became intolerable to the white settlers. In May 1774, Lord Dunmore, colonial governor of Virginia, formed an army to march across the Blue Ridge Mountains and take on the tribes. McClure was in the “left wing” of the Dunmore army, serving as a private in the Botetourt County Regiment.6
