Jacob Cunningham, 1
M, #1602, b. about 1715, d. 10 October 1759
Jacob Cunningham, the son of James and Mattie, killed in the first Shawnee Indian Raid on Kerrs Creek "who may be buried at the Big Spring," AKA McKee Cemetery. No age is given. His unnamed daughter was killed in the 17 Jul 1863 Indian Raid. McKee Cemetery, AKA the Big Spring Cemetery, recorded by Bob Driver and Margaret Seebert, provided by Rev. Wray Sherman of New Monmouth Presbyterian Church. Angela M. Ruley submitted this list also to usgwarchives online. It's also in Rockbridge Co., VA Cemeteries, Vol. I, Kerrs Creek District, 1990 by Angela M. Ruley which is also on Rootsweb and usgwarchvies.
After attacking and killing Charles "Dougherty's" entire family he came to Jacob's house and killed his wife and scalped his 10 year old daughter while Jacob was out. His daughter survived but was kidnapped by the Indians for a time, during the 2nd attack. She then lived about 40 years and died from the effects of the scalping. The McKees of Virginia and Kentucky by George Wilson McKee (died 1891), undated, p 37-38.
After attacking and killing all in Chas Dougherty's house, they came to Jacob Cunningham's home, "who was from home." They killed his unnamed wife and they tomahawked and scalped his 10 year old daughter. The daughter survived, only to be caught on the next Indian raid here "in 1765." She was taken "north of the Ohio, where the Indians placed on her head what they said was her scalp, and with great demonstrations of mirth and joy, danced around her. She was ransomed, rejoined her friends and lived many years, but ultimately died from the effects of the scalping, her head never properly healed." There were between 60 and 80 whites killed and about 25 to 30 kidnapped. History of Augusta Co. VA, by J. Lewis Peyton, 1953, p 140.
"With respect to the first there was a forewarning. Two Telford boys, returning from school, reported seeing a naked man near their path. Little serious thought seems to have been given to the matter. A few weeks later, twenty- seven Indians were counted from a blufT near the head of the creek. The war party first visited the home of Charles Dougherty and killed tlie whole family. The wife and a daughter of Jacob Cunningham were the next victims. The girl, ten years of age, was scalped, but made a partial recovery. Four Gilmores and five of the ten members of Robert Hamilton's family were afterward slain. The Indians did not go any farther. .Accounts differ as to whether any prisoners were taken by them. They killed 12 persons, and according to one statement, 13 were carried away." "Cunningham, James — to Jacob Cunningham— 100 (patent of 1745)— 5p — 1753 — Kerr's Cr." "Jacob Cunningham — will probated March 18. 1760." "Cunningham, James — to Jacob Cunningham— 100 acres (patent of 1745)— 5p — 1753 — Kerr's Cr." " Cunningham.--....
