Misc | | Parents: Richard Walden. Despite no mention of Candace as a child of Richard Walden and Candace Hubbard, DNA matches are completely consistent with her being a full sister to most of her siblings. The half siblings shown are Mary Hubbard, Henry, and Tabitha. These half designations are not necessarily accurate... Also, there is mixing up of Hubbards from Connecticut in many of the trees.
She is not mentioned in her father's will... but neither is her sister Philadelphia (Delphia). Maybe because they are older and already "launched".1 |

Robert Davis, Sr.
M, #453, b. about 1676, d. about 1771
Robert ‘the Black’ Davis
Also Known As: "The Black Davis", "Nathaniel Davis"
Birthdate: estimated between 1659 and 1719
Birthplace: Hanover, Virginia, United States
Death: after September 05, 1771
Natchez, Luisiana, Reino de Nueva España
Immediate Family:
Son of Nathaniel Davis, of Hanover and Mary Elizabeth Davis
Husband of Abadieh Davis; Anna Davis and Grace Davis
Father of Susannah Cox; James Davis; Isham Davis; Evan Davis; Elizabeth Sexton and 11 others
Brother of Mary Burks; Martha Venable; Phillip Davis; Matthew Davis and James Davis
King William Co. formed 1701 from King & Queen Co., VA
Amherst Co. formed 1761 from Albemarle Co., VA
“We are not certain where Robert was born, though some say King William County, Virginia and believe Nathaniel was his father; he names his first son Nathaniel.” -- “Anna Cartlidge notes that Robert, having lost his land in Amherst Co., Va. In a disputed filing by a Nicholas Davies, removed to Nachez, Miss. (then a part of Ga.), by July, 1759, where ‘. . .we find him in Georgia with his wife, five children, and thirteen slaves, petitioned for a grant on the south side of the Sapala River known by the name of Cedar Point.’
Those in his will to whom he leaves money are the children who remained east. . .His will was dated September 5th, 1771, and it was proved in 1773. (or 1790). Caraol Seales notes that we have no proof of these wives, except Grace who is named in his will.” -- per Carol Seales, email dated January 2002: “. . .he married 3 times, so the span in the children’s birthdates would be wide. He acquired a large amount of land in Amherst county, but failed to patent it correctly. Nicholas Davies came along and entered the patents on Robert Davis’ land and because it was not properly patented before, the court awarded all of Roberts land to Nicholas. My guess is that this made Robert so angry, he left for the territories. . .After Robert lost his large acreage in VA, he and his 3rd wife Grace with their sons Lewis, Landon and Hugh moved to the Southern Territory. Many entries can be found in the Natchez court records, but also in the Georgia Records and sometimes sources state Florida. The documents list such rivers as Thompson Creek and the Homochitto River.” (Stevens, Marshall, Mitchell, Washington and other Families, Pat M. Stevens IV, RootsWeb World Connect Project database)
“The Davis Family continued to be fur traders until about 1750. One fur station is thought to be one mile above the Otter Creek. In 1753, Robert Davis and his family stopped fur trading for plantation life. Robert built a plantation above the Lawrence Creek (Otter). However, Robert lost this plantation to Nicholas Davies because he had neglected to get a proper title for this property. It was around 1750 that Nicholas Davies came into this peaceful settlement with land grants. These land grants caused Robert Davis and Nicholas Davies to quarrel over who had a right to this land. However, since land grants were recognized over squatter rights, Robert had to leave the county. He moved to. . .Natchez on the Mississippi, then part of West Florida.” (The Stevens and Allied Families in America Since 1600s, Pat Stevens, Family Tree Maker On-line database)
“Court records in Natchez -- Court Book E, p 237, 5 Feb 1791 (Galveztown) -- concerning and estate argument between Martha Davis Foley and her former husband’s brothers show that -- Grace, widow of Robert Davis, died in the year 1784. . .Martha, widow of (1) Lewis Davis, married a (2) Foley). . .-- Lewis, Landon, and Hugh Davis have made a settlement. . .on June 12, 1790 in Galveztown on the estate of their father. (editor -- confusing in the papers because Lewis died before his mother, as is noted elsewhere. . .).” (The Stevens and Allied Families in America Since 1600s, Pat Stevens, Family Tree Maker On-line database)
Will: 5 Sept 1771, Adams County (Natchez), MS: “I Robert Davis of the Province of Georgia” -- wife Grace -- sons: Nathaniel; Isom; Robert; Lewis; Landon; Hugh -- daughters: Obediah Floyd; Sarah ---rks; Elizabeth Sexton -- “In Natchez whereof I have set my hand and seal the fifth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand Seven hundred and Seventy One.”

Scott has 16 matches on siblings Mary Elizabeth? born 1697 both parents 9 cm 2 segments they have their tree wrong. Their own reference says Mary Elizabeth is the daughter of Robert's father Nathaniel. It would also be a match twice because the Venables also married a Lewis, hence the 9 cm 2 segments. Nathaniel - one only Robert, one both Abadiah (spelled two ways)- one no CA, the rest all ONLY Robert. One both Robert and Abadiah (how could Abadiah not be descended from Abadiah?) Sarah - mostly just one (Sarah spelled two ways) Nathaniel - both John - only Robert
Trees are seriously messed up! |
Misc | | Samuel Davis. Was Samuel Davis a child of Robert Davis Sr? There is no Samuel in the will and I see no sign that Samuel Davis was of this Davis family. Of course, if he had died before 1771 and had no progeny that Robert would want to reward, he would not be named in the will. This seems unlikely if he is the ancestor of Jefferson Davis.5 |

Will | 5 September 1771 | In Georgia, British America. It is not clear where he is living. He says in the will he is a Georgia planter, but Georgia was not the state it is now and Mississippi Territory and Georgia seems to have been confused. The records were in Natchez, at least at some point... Followup suits related to the will in 1791 are also recorded in Natchez. Or, actually, a copy of the will are in these records, so it's not clear where the original will was...

Nathaniel Robert Davis
M, #454, b. about 1655, d. 1740
A dozen miles distant was the commodious Bungalow of Nathaniel Davis, a Welshman by descent, and one of the very early settlers in that region. He had made quite a large fortune by trading with the Catawba and other Indians, and by locating choice river-bottom lands from the present site of Lynchburg up to the Balcony Falls. Mr. Davis had among other children a beautiful daughter named Abadiah, whom the young man fell in love with and won for his bride. She was of excellent Welsh ancestry on her father's side, and onefourth of her blood on her mother's side, was derived from the most distinguished Indian ancestry. Her mother's mother, Nicketti - Indian equivalent for ''Beautiful Flower"—was a granddaughter of the noted Powhatan (the daughter of his youngest daughter) while the father of Nicketti was a chief of the small but warlike Cayuga tribe. Nicketti, whom the white people dubbed "Princess Nicketti," married a noted Scotch hunter and fur trader by the name of Hughes who made his chief headquarters near the beautiful Balcony Falls of James River, where Nathaniel Davis met and married a daughter of his who was the mother of Abadiah.
Floyd, N. J. (1912). Floyd Biographical Genealogies, Williams and Wilkins Company, Baltimore. p 11. Downloaded. page 11
Some years after this graceful Indian maiden had
reached the years of mature womanhood, a member [the
name is not given] of one of the old Cavalier families of
Virginia ‘fell in love with her and she with him,’ and the
result was a clandestine marriage, and a half-breed Indian
girl who married about the year 1680a Welshman (others
say a native of Devonshire, England,) named Nathaniel
Davis, an Indian trader, and, according to some accounts,
a Quaker; and from this alliance many notable people in
the East and in the West have descended. Their daughter,
Mary Davis (born about 1685) , married Samuel Burks of
Hanover (the ancestorsof the Burks family of Virginia),
and their daughter, Elizabeth Burks, married Capt. William
Cabell, the ancestor of the Cabells; Martha Davis,
another daughter, married Abraham Venable, the ancestor
of the Venables. Robert Davis, Sr., a son (the ancestor of
‘the black Davises’ of Kentucky, and from whom Jefferson
Davis descended), had a daughter, Abadiah (or Abigail)
Davis, who married William Floyd, the ancestor of the
Floyds of Virginia and of the West. A daughter, or
granddaughter, of the Quaker, married Gen’l Evan Shelby
of Maryland, the ancestor of the Shelbys of the West.
Samuel and Philip Davis of the Blue Mountains were sons,
and there may have been other sons and daughters.
Brown, Alexander (1978), The Cabells and their Kin, Virginia Book Company. p46
------------------------
It is said he came to Virginia from Wales, and was a Quaker. He is sometimes noted as Quaker Davis... But, Lorene Martens, see footnote, notes that "The Complete Book of Immigrants, 1607-1776" suggests that Nathaniel was "reprieved for transportation for Barbados June 1671, London." She recalls seeing somewhere that he was jailed and transported for stealing tobacco. "On 8 June 1671 Newgate prisoners reprieved to be transported to Barbados: London."

Birth | about 1655 | In Wales or Devonshire England? Also may have spent time in Barbados.
According to McCall-Tidwell and Allied Families:. "formerly of Devonshire, England, one of the refugees from Quaker persecutions, who settled in Virginia". That makes sense because Quakers did better in Indian country...
BUT according to the Memoirs of Letitia Preston Floyd: "he met with a family by the name of Davis whose ancestors had come from Wales."
And the Tuley Family Memoirs say he was Welch.

Abadiah Lewis
F, #461, b. 1680, d. 1750
Parents
Birth | 1680 | In Barbados or Virginia. I don't see proof that Abadiah was a daughter of Hugh Lewis and Margaret Elizabeth Dallathy. We do have several records which report her name was Abadiah Lewis. It is true that they were apparently in the same circles because a Lewis daughter married a Venable... She was born after the will of her maternal grandfather that named his grandchildren.1 |
Marriage1 | | |
Death | 1750 | At age ~70. |
Misc | | Parents - Hugh Lewis and ? There are several possible wives. Margaret Elizabeth Dallathy and Elizabeth Simpson. Margaret's father died before Abadiah was born and at that time he was married to Margaret Dallathy, so Margaret must be the 2nd wife and the mother of Abadiah (if there were more than one). Hugh Lewis would not be an uncommon name!
A tree has Isabella Miller
Someone wrote Abadiah could not be the the daughter of Margaret (or Hugh?) because she as not named in the will, but she was not born yet when her grandfather died.2,3 |
Misc | | Story. "Of the first wife of Abraham Venables I we know nothing more; of the second, and her father, we have some knowledge. From the record of Nathaniel Venable of "Slate Hill," Prince Edward Co., Va., as above stated, we learn that she was "widow of John Hicks or Nicljs and daughter of Lewis"; from that of William Lewis Morton, her great-grandson, that "Hugh Lewis came first with his wife and daughter, Abadiah Lewis, and lost his wife in America and returned to Britain with Abadiah, his only (unmarried) daughter and both returned to America with Robert Davis.""4 |
Immigration | 1717 | Virginia. Not sure what this is or who this is. If it's Abadiah Lewis, it could be from Barbados where her parents lived. With the name Davis she had to have been married before this.5 |

The State Assembly seems to have kept the annuity at 10 pounds per annum, but gave her a lump sum of 500 pounds as shown on the back side of petition. - [S1187] https://www.ancestry.com/mediaui-viewer/tree/39240217/person/28890965427/media/62b6eede-24bd-4336-ab01-5d2e7c3883e5

Mary Elizabeth Davis
F, #466, b. about 1685, d. 12 February 1756
Samuel Burk (b. 180) m. Mary Davis (b. 1685), daughter of Nathaniel Davis. (It is at this point that Indian blood enters the Burks family), as Nthaniel's wife was Elizabeth Hughes, daughter of a member of a colonial family and a Traader named Hughes and his Indian wife, Niketti, whose mother was Cleopatra, sister to Pocahontas. Or so it has been recorded in several genealogies. The Indian name Niketti translates as "She who sweeps the dew from the flowers." Documentation for the Burks/Davis genealogy of Nicketti is given by Frank Wellington's daugnhter, Mary Wheat Burks Dean. She is the researcher of this Burks genealogy, which was begun by her mother. It is supplemented by informaton from Faye S. Poss. Faye Pooss is researching the Burks who migrated to GA. There is positive and indisputable proof that Pocahontas had a sister named Cleopatra. This proof was located in the old library of the Maryland Historical Society, an item of three lins covering eleven years. During the period covered by the fragment, matters became so bad between the Whites and the Indians that Opechancanough, Chief of the Powhatans, was induced to agree upon a line being established which neither White nor Indian, excepting truce bearers, should cross under penalty of being shot on sight. To insure strict obedience to the compact, a law was passed at Jamestown imposing a heavy penalty on any people crossing the line without a special permit from the Commissioners Council and the General Court. This accounts for the item alluded to, which is given verbatim. It reads: "Dec. 17th, 1641 -- Thomas Rolfe petitions the governor to let him see Opechankeno to whom he is allied, and Cleopatra, his mother's sister." The record of the General Court evidently intended to be a verbatim copy though they differ in phraseology and spelling: "Dec. 17th, 1641 -- Thomas Rolph petitions Gov. to let him go see Opechanko, to whom he is allied, and Cleopatre, his mother's sister." Thomas Rolfe was the son of John Rolfe and Pocahontas, and Cleopatra was unquestionably not his aunts Indian name. It is, however the only name that has been passed to us historically, and we must accept it. One wonders if her name was not "Matachanna", the aunt-nurse associated with his mother in Thomas Rolfes earliest memories.

Is it possible she is the child of Nathaniel's son Robert? Reports in books are some one, some the other. Her birth date would work. Or maybe there are two Martha.

Abraham Venable
M, #469, b. 22 March 1700, d. 1 March 1768
His father, Abraham Venables, was born “22 March 1700” (O. S. or N. S.?) ; he married, about 1723, Martha (or Hannah) Davis, daughter of Nathaniel Davis, from Devonshire, England, a Quaker of Hanover County, Va. (She was born July 14, 1703; died February 13, 1765. She is said to have been an aunt to Dr. William Cabell's first wife. They were related, but what the relationship was, in the absence of direct evidence, I cannot say.) Abraham Venables owned a great deal of land in this section in Hanover, Louisa, and Goochland counties, and also on "Ye Byrd creek" (near the present Louisa and Fluvanna line), on Hardware River, and in the South Garden, Albemarle. In my papers the name is spelled "Venables" prior to 1750; after, the final ''s" is seldom used. He had been a justice of the peace in Hanover, and was one of the first justices of the peace of Louisa, from the first County Court, December 3, 1742; was a vestryman of Fredericksville Parish, 1742-1761, and of Trinity Parish, 1762-1768; and probably of St. Paul's, Hanover, prior to 1742. He was a Captain in the Colonial Militia; for a time, County Lieutenant of Louisa, and for some 20 years Member of the House of Burgesses from Louisa County. He was the friend, legal client, and political supporter of Patrick Henry. His son, Wm. Venable, nominated Patrick Henry in the county meeting as a candidate for the House of Burgesses of 1765. He is said to have been the most influential man of his name that ever lived in Virginia, and from him all the Virginia Venables descend. His will is dated April 11, 1768. He died December 16, 1768, and his will was probated January 9 following.
