Agnes Daugherty
F, #1453, b. 1778, d. 1821
Maybe she was a Davidson and people just thought she was the daughter of George Daugherty? There are a fair number of trees, but none that I saw clarify anything. One tree has Agnes Davidson marrying a John West. But the will calls her Agnes Daugherty and mentions a grandchild Margaret Daugherty.

Charles Daugherty
M, #1459, b. about 1716, d. 17 July 1763
Charles Daugherty was born circa 1716 at Lagan Valley, Donegal, Ireland. He married Rebecca Cunningham before 1729, daughter of James Cunningham and Margaret Graves Cunningham. She was born abt 1715, and died after 22 MAR 1768 in Augusta Co., VA.
Charles Daugherty was one of the Early Settlers of Augusta County, Virginia. He immigrated with his father and brothers from Chester Co., PA, to Augusta Co., VA, by 1738, the year Augusta Co. was cut out of Orange Co, to Borden's Great Grant in what is now Rockbridge Co. He settled on Kerr Creek, Augusta Co. (the year its records began) as early as 1745, when he witnessed some deeds. On 6 Aug 1753, he witnessed a deed of James Cunningham for 100 acres of land on Tees Creek of James River, cornering the land of Moses Cunningham on 6 Aug 1753 at Augusta Co., VA.
According to several accounts, Charles Daugherty (and possibly other family members) were killed in the 2nd Kerr's Creek Massacre on 17 July, 1763. Other reports claim he was killed in the first attack in 1759, but it appears based upon evidence presented below that he died in the second attack.

Rebecca Cunningham
F, #1460, b. about 1715
Rebecca Cunningham was recognized as a heroine in saving many people during th e Indian raid that caused her husbands death. Her name wa s a Plantation name and her ancestors were landlords in the Raphoe area. Two villages were named after them: Manor and Newton Cunningham.

Death | | "The family" was supposed to be killed in the first Indian raid, but she is ascribed a different death date than her husband, but she administered her husband's estate in 1763. She is usually assigned a 1768 death date, but the following is from Descendants of Alexander Cunningham:
"Our part of the Daugherty migration to Kentucky was the second wave, descendants of Charles Daugherty and wife Rebecca in the 1780s, ten years after his brother Michael Daugherty II's sons. After Charles was killed by Indians in Augusta Co., VA in 1763, his widow and children remained there about ten years before some moved west into Kentucky."3,4,1 |

Misc | | Another marriage? Descendants of Alexander Cunningham has Rebecca, daugher of James (JAMES6, ALEXANDER5, DAVID4, JOSEPH3, JOHN2, ALEXANDER1) marrying first James Daugherty. I think this is incorrect. The Rebecca who married James Daugherty was a daughter of William as proven by a record.
"2 Jan 1771 Deed: William Cunningham deeded land to his son-in-law, James Dougherty, a wheelright. James had married William's daughter, Rebecca Cunningham. James also served as the executor of his father-in-law's estate in 1780."[1]1 |
Misc | 20 September 1763 | (216) Rebecca Dougherty qualified admx. of husband, Charles Dougherty. This is confusing because most records say Rebecca died as well that day.6 |

Cornelius Daugherty
M, #1461, b. circa 1729, d. 1800
There are several stories about Cornelius. See the attached file Daughterty's of Kentucky for one rendition. But in this tree, he is a son of Charles Daugherty and Rebecca Cunningham. This is consistent with this story:
Our part of the Daugherty migration to Kentucky was the second wave, descendants of Charles Daugherty and wife Rebecca in the 1780s, ten years after his brother Michael Daugherty II's sons. After Charles was killed by Indians in Augusta Co., VA in 1763, his widow and children remained there about ten years before some moved west into Kentucky. Charles and Rebecca's son Cornelius, born ca 1729 probably in Pennsylvania, was a weaver who immigrated with his father and grandfather to Augusta Co. from Chester Co., PA in 1738. Cornelius served in Capt. George Robinson's company of militia in 1742. From 1742-49 Cornelius and his wife (1) Mary Hill lived on Cedar Creek on the North fork of the Roanoke in Augusta Co. They had, according to one book, six sons and six daughters, but not all their names are known; only George H., Noble, Ann, William, Isabel, Christopher, Abraham, Robert, Alexander, and Thomas Daugherty. Mary Hill died and Cornelius married about 1770 (2) Agnes _____. They had William, James Hill, John, and Cornelius R., Jr.From 1738 to 1786, Cornelius lived successively, as county lines changed, on Cedar Creek and owning land on Cedar Swamp in Augusta, Botetourt, Rockbridge Cos., and back in Botetourt Co., VA. On 25 May 1786 he was granted a Virginia patent in Lincoln Co., which became Kentucky, 500 acres on Muddy Creek on main branch of the creek about 3 miles from head of Lick Creek. From 1787-1797 he was on Lincoln Co. tax lists and lived at Estill Station seven years. He left no will and is date of death is uncertain.
Parents

Marriage | | According to online trees, they had an unbeliavable number of children, starting when Mary would have been 8 years old... So I'm not adding children. He may have had a wife named Agnes. Daugherty Family (see in sources) says he had children with Agnes after Mary Hill died.3 |
Death | 1800 | In Madison, Kentucky, United States. |
Residence | BY 1800 | In Washington County, Kentucky, United States. Living in Washington County, Kentucky. By 1800, Noble, John and William were living in Washington County and Christopher and his wife, Martha, moved to Hardin County, where he died between 1812 and 1819.4 |

William Daugherty
M, #1462, b. 1 November 1748, d. before June 1835
William Daugherty was born in Augusta Virginia. He served in the Revolutionary War being drafted into the Virginia Militia in October of the year 1777. He was attached to Capt John Paxton's Company at Rockbridge (formed in 1778 from Augusta and Botetourt counties) and the Company which he belonged was marched to the mouth of Kenhaw River where they joined a Company commanded by General Edward Hand. His Company remained at this point for the remainder of his first tour. William was again drafted in September of the year 1779. He joined the company of Captain William Taylor in the county of Rockingham and marched from that place to join the army under the command of General George Washington at Norfolk, Virginia. He was then compelled to return home, due to illness in his family, and hired a substitute to complete his tour. He was again, for the third time, drafted as a Militiaman in the service of the United States around September of 1781 and joined the Company of William Moore. A few days after he joined the aforesaid company, they took up the line of march and marched to the Seige of Little York under the command of General Washington. He was at the Capture of Lord Cornwallis on 19 Oct 1781 and the Company that he belonged to was detailed to guard the prisoners to Winchester, Virginia. After landing at that place, and after the expiration of the time which he was drafted, he was discharged. William remained in Virginia until the close of the war at which time he removed to Lincoln County, Kentucky where he resided until his death in 1835.

When James Cunningham was born in 1695 in Donegal, Donegal, Ireland, his father, Alexander, was 32 and his mother, Rebecca, was 27. He married Margaret Ann "Mattie" Graves in 1718. They had 12 children in 44 years. He probably died in 1763, and was buried in Rockbridge, Virginia.
James, half-brother to the rest of Alexander's sons, was a Revolutionary War veteran, having served with his half-brother David.
It is believed that both James and his wife Margaret died 17 Jul 1763 in a Kerr's Creek Massacre. In any case, Margaret was dead by the time the will was probated on 19 March 1765.

Robert Edward Baber
M, #1467, b. about 1725, d. 6 July 1786
Robert Baber was born in about 1725 in Albemarle County, Virginia in about 1725. Robert Baber was the son of Robert Baber, Jr. or II, and one of his wives, Elizabeth, a possible first wife or perhaps second wife Margaret whose maiden name is believed to have been Welch.
The Baber family was among the lower end of the aristocratic Virginia elite. They were land owners, plantation owners, slave owners, and office holders in both the Colonial and post Colonial periods. They also in small ways impacted our history or touched upon those that did. Robert (Edward) Baber, III is no exception.
We can assume that he was well educated, probably by a private tutor who probably also educated his siblings. We can make this assumption regarding his level of education from what we know of his adult life. He was Justice of the County Court in Bedford County, Virginia, a job that required him to transcribe records, create records, and correspond with other Virginia officials. He needed not only to be able to read and write, but to do so articulately. Additionally, we have a sample of his writing, a le??er sent to Colonel George Washington (see below), then the head of the Virginia Militia.
Robert married a woman named Jane, most likely in Albemarle County, Virginia. As is the norm with the three generations of Robert Babers, little if anything is known about Jane. Most internet researchers, and many reference books say Jane’s maiden name was Pendleton and that she was a cousin to Edmond Pendleton.(4) After researching the Pendleton family and the Baber family, I have found not a single original record, first hand family history, or any other documentation supporting the maiden name Pendleton and cannot even find a Pendleton named Jane living anywhere near the Robert Baber II family.
Based on the excellent research that Mr. Chuck Prine posted on the internet, much of which I have verified and agree with, I agree with Mr. Prine’s hypothesis that Robert Baber, III’s wife, Jane, is most likely (not proven) the daughter of John and Mary Phelps.
The children of Robert and Jane Baber were:
Elizabeth Baber Hayes (1749-1779),
Mary Baber Perrin (1750-1810),
Jane Baber Farmer (1752 – )
John Baber (1755-1809)
William Baber (1760-1830)
James Baber (1762-1836)
Robert Baber was engaged in public service. Robert Baber was engaged in public service. He served as Sheriff of Bedford County in 1754 and served as a Justice of the County Court for at least 1758. In his capacity as Justice, he transcribed an affidavit by Timothy Dalton reporting an Indian a??ack. The affidavit was provided to Colonel George Washington in his capacity as a militia commander.
Robert Baber, III also served as a member of the Virginia Assembly, elected 9 Nov 1776. He signed a petition seeking to allow all people to worship according their personal conviction. During the Revolutionary War, he received certificates in 1782 and 1783 for furnishing supplies to the Continental Army.
Robert Baber died in 1786.
Based on Robert (Edward) Baber, (III), Colonial Official and Patriot.

Robert Baber
M, #1473, b. July 1684, d. 1749
Robert Baber, Jr., was born in 1684 in Rappahannock, Virginia Colony (became Richmond County in 1692), to Robert and Sarah Baber.
Robert married Elizabeth Unknown before 1713. They had eight children including son William. Robert was a plantation owner. He bought and sold hundreds of acres of land in his lifetime. It appears that he was trying to consolidate his holdings. Some of his land transactions are included below
Records indicate that on July 9, 1724, Robert Baber was granted “300 acres on the east side of the South Fork of Reedy Swamp in St. Johns Parish (King William County, Virginia Colony) adjoining Cockerhams land.”
On March 24, 1725, Robert sold “350 acres on both sides of south fork on the Reedy Swamp binding upon 300 acres belonging to sd. Cockerham, and Robert and upon the back of another piece belonging to the said Cockerham lying between the North Fork and the South Fork of Reedy Swamp” to William Cockerham (husband of daughter Sarah).
On July 13, 1726, Robert was granted “170 acres on the north side of the Middle Fork of the Reedy Swamp in St. Margarets Parish . . .” In October of the same year, Robert was granted “344 acres on the south side of the North fork of the Reedy Swamp . . .”
The Caroline County, Virginia Colony Court Order Book, page 31, indicates “Robert Baber and Elizabeth his wife convey land to John Butler August 10, 1732.” Elizabeth died between 1732 and 1737.
Robert married his second wife Margaret Welch in Albemarle County, Virginia, between 1732 and May 1737. She was born in King William County, Virginia Colony, about 1703. Robert and Margaret had four children.
The specific marriage dates of Robert and each wife is not clear. Consequently, the children born between 1732 and 1737 may be assigned to the wrong woman.
Robert Baber purchased “300 acres, Albemarle Co., both sides of Bear Garden cr., e. of William Cannon’s in Wenworth Webb’s line,” January 12, 1746.
Robert died about 1749. Margaret was expecting a child when Robert died and gave birth to a female child whose first name has yet to be determined.
Robert Baber Last Will and Testament, which was signed on December 12, 1747, reveals a striking impression of his personality and the mores of the time. The will was probated in August 1749.

I don't know... 1) How we tell father Robert Baber from son Robert Baber, wrt for example land transactions 2) It is not clear to me that Robert Baber b 1684 is different from Edward Baber b1682. The person b 1651 is probably a Robert Edward and maybe there is only one son named Robert Edward not a Robert and an Edward.
There are land transactions between a Robert to an Edward which might (or might not) clarify this. |
