James Spencer
M, #1526, b. about 1735, d. 1780
Parents
Birth | about 1735 | In Charlottesville, Albemarle, Virginia, British America.1,2 |
Marriage | 17581 | |
Death | 1780 | In Charlottesville, Albemarle, Virginia, United States.1,3,2 |
Misc | | DNA Matches - good. May 2024 87 matches. 12 with William W but 28 with Thomas R S called half. Curiously nothing on William W Sr, all 12 on William W Jr Thomas R. S. that I checked common ancestor James Spencer and Eleanor Robertson
We are descended from both John Harvey and William W
Scott with small tree: 92 matches across 6 other children than William W. Thomas is called half. I have TWO Thomas' 13 kids altogether! Both Thomas' are listed! Thomas b1767 has both as common ancestors with 3 matches. The other Thomas b1774 has both for the ones I checked. walden They put Scott under William W b1770 (15 matches) but gets 31 matches with John H _______________________________ 2024 88 DNA matches with multiple children, some called half.
50 DNA Matches. This has gone down from 70 and fewer from John Harvey too! 9 with John Harvey, the rest with siblings.
Scott Borgmier has 84 matches, across 8 siblings. Now the father is "John 'James' Spencer". 26 under John H, and the rest all are names in my list. [Previously they put them under William!} 2024 using my tree: Scott has 95 matches across a lot of children. |
Misc | | Wives. He may have had more than one wife, but John Harvey, James, Thomas and Charles seem to have the same mother. BUT the list of children I get with James Spencer is the exact same list. |
Misc | | Parents: Not proven. familysearch.com has two possible parents: Preferred: John Spencer (1715-1765) and Mary McDowell (mine was Mary Hobday)
Alternate: William Nicholas Spencer (1675-1745) and Rachel Brooks (1695-1750)
DNA seems to indicate William Nicholas Spencer (1681-1759) Scott and I each have one match each but different. Both go to WN Spencer only and are called half.
No matches on the mother and no matches on Hobday.1,2 |
Military | 6 April 1778 | Private, 15th Regiment in Virginia.4 |
Will | 6 September 1780 | In Charlotte, Virginia, British America. The will looks like Ellender as his wife and an executor is Edward Robertson. His daughter Joyce Spencer, maybe his eldest child, married an Edward Robinson.5![Spencer James b1735 will and probate](../st/picicon.png) |

Eleanor Robertson
F, #1527, b. 1739, d. 1810
Some have a middle name Mahlon.
Parents
Birth | 1739 | |
Marriage | 17581 | |
Death | 1810 | At age ~71 in Charlottesville, Albemarle, Virginia, United States. I also see 1815 in Charlotte County, VA |
Misc | | DNA Matches - excellent. 80 Matches 19 with John Harvey the rest with siblings
Scott Borgmier has 84 matches. All of the children under Eleanor are children we have listed there under Eleanor Robertson and James Spencer. Of course this does not prove the name of this person... just that children of this mother are related.
We are related to the Spencers in two ways... |
Misc | | Parents - unknown. We have too many DNA matches with Matthew -> James for it not to be this family. (Matthew is not in the ancestry tree so that is not confusing thrulines.) Father's will names two other son in laws but not her husband. Also, how did they find each other? I have her husband born in Albemarle County and they live and die in Albemarle County.
"Everybody" else has her parents as James Robertson (1713-1795) and Elizabeth Christian Mann (1715-1759)
Some assign her to John Robertson. Who is John Robertson?
If in error, the most likely is a different son of James as the father than Matthew?
Some people assign her to a James Robertson and wife Christian who apparently had been in Barbados. ___________________ There are DNA matches for Daniel Robertson, but somehow they make me uncomfortable. Just not clean. I was entering siblings, but then went back to see if I could convince myself that these were her family and I cannot. Plus I found an issue. In her husband's will he mentions an Edward Robertson. Matthew Robertson's family seems to have NO Edwards. So I go hunting for Edwards and cannot find a suitable one. I"m leaving them connected, but I'm not happy with the solution. It looks like more trees have Matthew than any other prospect, but trees in general are wrong... so that's no evidence at all. I did check some trees for evidence I do not have, but found none. ___________________ Good grief, the FS tree has James Spencer marrying Eleanor Robertson, dau of James Robertson and Martha Field Archer and I commented about lack of evidence... People keep adding and deleting her I think... https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LZ8K-GT8
Removed both parents.
Consider possible relationship to James Robertson (1742-1814) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Robertson_(explorer) No daughter Eleanor in his tree in FS
Connection to potential parents names seem to be from records in Barbados. Possible...
There was an Edward Robertson mentioned in her husband's will/probate. Worth looking into him as a brother or even father? Looked hard for a suitable Edward and found a couple of names but no information at all.
James son of George is James Edward to some people and some mention the will does not list early children (first wife)but not good enough. Who was Edward Robertson?
Matthew Robertson (1713 Scotchirish - 1786) and Elizabeth Mann (1737-1811)no son listed named Edward https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/116822867/person/332059201570/facts
Elizabeth Mann was apparently born in Charlottesville! But this family is almost not known at all... |

Death | before 9 September 1793 | In Buckingham Co. Virginia.1,3 |
Education | | Illiterate - signed will with an X.6 |
Military | | Revolutionary War Records.7 |
Misc | | DNA Matches. I no longer believe he's a direct ancestor. Most are only on William but not all! All are called half.
May 2024 26 matches on William Baber born 1713. 23 on Robert and 2 on George and one on Isaac. Both called half. George's common ancestor is William Baber. Isaac has William Baber and Lucy Howell.
Scott's small tree has a good idea that the father of Robert Baber b1766 is William Fulton Baber (1747-1809) and has 42 DNA matches, 23 on Josiah Robert which I assume is our Robert by the dates. Common ancestor William Fulton Baber and Candace Hubbard Walden for George, is called half but both WFB and Candace TLucrecia is called half and only WFB but the other Lucrecia is Thomas J Anderson and Saray Myers which I assume is his father's match. Mourning Baber has 11 matches! The ones I checked are William Fulton and Candace Mary Polly is WFB and Candace Nancy Baber Thomas (?) (1788-1882) is WFB only and married Kemp Thomas
__________________________ 2024 William Baber matches is down to 3! NONE with my Robert and the others are called half. With Lucy Howell ONLY one with Isaac not called half. ------------------------ 26 across 3 children, others called half
30 matches on 4 children, but all called "half" 1 match to Lucy Howell, which of course does not match her name, with Isaac, so 2 children.
Scott has 28 matches. 23 with Robert and the rest called half |
Misc | | Parents: Named in father's will. Mother? Who his mother is depends on his birth date! 1713 does not seem likely... Robert's first wife was Elizabeth
took place about 1732. See notes under Robert Baber.
Second wife was Margaret Welch
But no way to prove with DNA at this time who it is and nothing seems to be known about Margaret Welch anyway...8 |

Virginia Revolutionary War Service Records
Virginia State Line
Troops served under state authority in units known as the Virginia State Line, enlisting for three-year terms beginning in 1776. Originally intended for duty within the state, these units were sometimes called to reinforce the Continental Army in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and the Carolinas. The State Line also included George Rogers Clark’s Illinois Regiment, which fought against the British and their Indigenous allies in the Northwest Territory, in what are now Illinois and Indiana. Virginia also created a State Navy with personnel enlisted for three-year terms.
Service records exist in the for some State Line soldiers in the form of payrolls and muster rolls of their units. These records are located in the Library of Virginia archives. Records of State Line units housed in the National Archives are abstracted as Compiled Service Records for each individual.
