Hiram Baber married a daughter of Jesse Boone. He was sheriff of St. Charles county one term, and was a reckless, fun-loving sort of a man. He built a brick residence in· St. Charles, and carved over the door, in large letters, "Root, Hog, or Die." He moved from· St; Charles to Jefferson City, and became one of the leading men of the State. He made a great deal of money, and spent it as freely as he made it. He would often, in braggadocio, light his pipe with bank bills, to show bow easily he could make money and how little he cared for it.

Source: Henry County Orphan Court Records Written: January 1848
I have the estate records of Shadrach Ward Sr b bet 1760 & 1770, died Henry County AL 1848. There are numerous pages ... too many to type the entire thing, however, hopefully this little bit will help someone.
Shadrick's estate records are in books E & F of the Henry County Orphans Court (Probate Records). The first date appearing on the estate records, the date Shadrack's death was reported to the court was 17 January 1848. The final hearing on his estate (closing & settling the estate) occurred on 19 Feb 1850. It's difficult for me to understand all the legal terminology, however, I can tell you that at the time of his death he owned land legally described as follows: "the certain tract or parcel of land situated in Henry County Alabama known as the NorthEast quarter of NorthEast quarter of Section No. 30 Tract No. 7 & Range No. 28." (more or less 40 acres).
QUOTE directly from the court record: "That said SHADRACH WARD dec’d left a widow SUSANNAH WARD and 9 children to wit SARAH BOLLIN wife of JEREMIAH BOLLIN, ARTEMUS WARD, SAMUEL WARD, PHEREBY GRAY, WEST WARD, SHADRACH WARD, MESHACK WARD, SAMPSON WARD and JOHN D WARD, reside in said county of Henry. That Meshack Ward resides in Coosa County in said State. That Sampson Ward & Shadrach Ward reside in Pike County in said State. Samuel P Ward resides in Dale County in said State and that Sarah Bollin (formerly Ward) and wife of Jeremiah Bollin is supposed to reside in the State of Virginia county unknown and that proceeds cannot be served on said heir only by publication in a newspaper."
QUOTE directly from the court record: "Whereas there are several negroes belonging to the Estate of SHADRACH WARD dec’d to be divided between the widow of the deceased SUSANNAH WARD and the following named children & heirs of the deceased to wit SARAH BOLLIN wife of JEREMIAH BOLLIN, ARTEMUS WARD, SAMUEL P WARD, PHEREBY GRAY, WEST WARD, SHADRACH WARD, MESHACK WARD, SAMPSON WARD & JOHN D WARD the number of negroes being only six and that a division cannot be made without a sale of the same. Wherefore it is ordered that H.E. Owens administrator of the dec’d do advertise the same for sale and after thirty days notice by said advertisement proceed to sell the same at public outcry before the courthouse door in said county on a credit of twelve months and make return to this court a true statement of such sale for record. B.C. LANSDALE, J.C.C." ... end of quote
The 6 negroes were as follows: - 1 man named Jack abt 45 yrs old - 1 boy named Moses about 8 yrs old - 1 girl named Spicey about 6 yrs old - 1 woman named Maria about 38 yrs old who had 2 boys Jacob & Charles (described only as "small").
Jack was sold at "public outcry at the courthouse steps" to a local man named Patrick B. Skipper. Moses went to Susannah Ward (Shadrach's widow). Spicey went to Samuel P Ward (Shadrach's son). Maria and her 2 boys were sold at public outcry to William Gamble. In addition to his land and negroes, Shadrach owned a number of personal items, dishes, furniture, saddles, tools etc which were divided among his widow & heirs or sold at auction to local men in the community.
Additional Comments: I do hope this information is helpful to someone.
