James McCoun

M, #3504, b. 1767, d. 1832
James Maccoun (fifth of the name in direct succession) was born in Botetourt County, Virginia, in 1767; died in Paris, Kentucky, 1832. Was an early settler at Lexington, and one of her most enterprising citizens, being one of the Trustees of Transylvania University, 1783 ; one of the founders of the Public Library in 1805, and of the Kentucky Eastern Lunatic Asylum (Fayette Hospital) in 18 16, the first three institutions of their kind in the State. He was an elder of the Presbyterian Church. He married, in Mercer County, Kentucky, October 21, 1797, Elizabeth Rice (born in Bedford County, Virginia, January 10, 1774, died in Paris, Kentucky, February 18, 1833), daughter of Reverend David Rice and his wife, Mary Blair, daughter of Reverend Samuel Blair, of Faggs Manor, Pennsylvania. Reverend David Rice, son of David and grandson of Thomas Rice, the emigrant, was born in Hanover County, Virginia, December 20, 1733 ; ordained by Hanover Presbytery, December, 1763 ; was a distinguished patriot of the Revolution, and a member of the Committee of Safety for Bedford County, May, 1775 ; was one of the founders of the Hampden-Sidney College ; emigrated to Kentucky in 1773, and became the father of Presbyterianism in the State. He was the moving spirit and one of the charter members of Transylvania Seminary, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees for many years. The school was opened in his house, in Lincoln County, and his son-in-law, Reverend James Mitchell, was its first teacher. David Rice was recently called the "wisest statesman of his day and the most learned man in Kentucky." He left numerous descendants in Virginia and Kentucky. He died June 18, 1816. The Presbyterian Church of Kentucky has erected a beautiful monument to him and his wife in the city park at Danville.

MiscParents. It looks like either Robert Tyler b1727 did not like his daughter Margaret or she was not his daughter...

"He bequeathed negroes to his daughter Millicent Tyler, his son Robert Bradley Tyler, and his niece Sarah Gray. ... In the event that his son and daughter died without issue, the estate was to go to "my nephew Henderson Magruder". "

Some say she was the daughter of Robert Tyler and Mary Butt, but I have that family with an Elizabeth Tyler born that year, about which little is known. Nor is her birth date supported by good evidence.
__________
mm: Genealogies of Virginia Families Vol. III, from Tyler's Quarterly Historical and Genealogical Magazine, page 648 mentions that margaret is the d/o Robert Tyler b. 1727 and Eleanor Bradley and married Robert Tyler a cousin.
[JN I cannot find this reference.]

two problems, Margaret was not a s/o of Robert Tyler and Eleanor Bradley per his 1778 will and her husband Robert Tyler s/o Edward Tyler b. 1696 was nephew of his father's brother Robert Tyler b. 1723 s/o Edward b. 1696
