Family: James Stigler (b. 1708, d. between May 1764 and 2 May 1765)
Birth | about 1715 | In Warrenton, Fauquier, Virginia, British America. Some people have her Mary Martha Berry (1712-1776)dau of John Joseph (Henry) Berry Sr (1700-1749)and Grace Powell (1702-1757)
When Mary Martha Berry was born in 1712, in Warrenton, Fauquier, Virginia, United States, her father, James Berry, was 48 and her mother, Grace Powell, was 16. She married James Stigler about 1729. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 3 daughters. She died in 1776, in Hanover Parish, King George, Virginia, United States, at the age of 64. https://ancestors.familysearch.org/en/L7G6-191/mary-martha-berry-1712-1776 |

Misc | | Father: Joseph Berry, mother unknown. DNA says her father is Joseph Berry b1691 and does not link to Catherline Simcock/Burnbury nor have I found any mother that has evidence. Her mother was apparently not Catherine Simcock. Gap to next child and no DNA matches with Catherine.
No females are listed in her father's will.
WikiTree does not list her as a child of Joseph Berry on one Joseph Berry page, but does have Joseph as her father on her page here, and gives her a mother. Is that Joseph a different Joseph? See 2nd link https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Berry-7153 https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Berry-7152
Are there TWO Joseph Berry people b1691 St. Mary's Parish, d1749 wife is Catherine Sim Cox? (not Simcock) oh, my claims Catherine is adopted! https://www.colonial-settlers-md-va.us/getperson.php?personID=I19514&tree=Tree1
Joseph Berry b1690 St. Paul's Parish, d1749 VERY sparse, looks like just to create a father for our Martha Stigler But wife is Grace Powell https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Berry-7152
Who were her parents?
From Myheritage: Mary Martha Stiglar (born Berry) was born in 1712, in birth place. Mary married James Stiglar in 1729, at age 17 in marriage place. James was born in 1708, in birth place. They had one daughter: Catherine Thornton Stringfellow (born Stiglar). Mary passed away in 1765, at age 53 in death place.
Familysearch shows her parents were James Berry (1664-1739)and Grace Powell (1696-1757) and they were married 28 May 1723. SO if Martha was born in 1712, that was 11 years before her parents were married and 11 years before any other child listed and then almost one a year until 1733. James could have had another wife because he was a lot older than Grace Powell.
There is also Robert Harrison (-1720) and Elizabeth Wolfendall No sources.3 |
Misc | | DNA Matches - good. 8/22/2024 Scott's DNA on Samuel Anderson 14 matches on children of Mary Martha Barry. Same as with James Stigler. BUT the proof of Berry ancestry only comes with the good DNA matches with her father Joseph Berry, which we have.
And there is no suggested wife for Joseph Berry, so one would assume she is pretty much unknown.
6/2/2024 Scott's DNA connected to Samuel Anderson 13 DNA matches to Joseph Berry. Some people think a brother, but DNA says it's him. There is a gap, so it is presumed to be a different wife than Catherine Simcock, and some people call her Grace. On the other hand, some people fill that gap with children (but no one in the gap shows up in DNA matches). The matches are only with Joseph. |
Misc | | Maiden name. Often her maiden name is MNU. True on Early Colonial Settlers. But "N. Strother is Nicholas Strother and he was grandson of Grace Berry. James Stigler’s wife Martha might be Martha Harrison. She is related to Grace Berry."
WikiTree says her name is Martha Berry and provides parents names.
I consider it proved with DNA matches to her father Joseph Berry. See also the huge number of Berry names in records related to James Stigler.4,5 |

Samuel Stigler
M, #3567, b. about 1730, d. between March 1800 and May 1800
The family did not stay long in King George County but some moved to Culpepper and Faquier Counties of Virginia. We find that James and Martha conveyed to Samuel stigler Eldeat son 60 acres of land (Deed book 4, King George County, Virginia) 5 April 1764 for and in consideration of the natural love and affection they have for Samuel Stigler. This was the upper part of the larger tract that James Stigler holds, land adjoining that of Thomas Skinner, Joseph Harrison, Robert Peck Jr. and Captain Joseph Strother as by a survey and plot made by Benjamin Berry. Martha, also listed is a statement of fact that this was a Deed of Gift.
The following year 2 May 1765, Samuel and Sarah, his wife lease this land to Joseph Harrisson for 5 shillings of lawful money of Greaat Eritian, term one whole year to be compled and Joseph Harrison "Therefore yielding and paying unto said Samuel Stigler and Sarah, his wife, the rent of one Ear of Indian Corn upon the feast of St. Michael the Arch Angel if same shall be lawfully demanded to the true intent."
Apparently 1765 is the date Samuel and Sarah moved to Culpepper Co., Virginia, moving from the Parish of Burnswick in Kung George Co. There were two Virginia Public Service claims dated June 18,1781 and October 14, 1781. Certificates for beef furnished for public use by Samuel Stigler.
Culpepper County Deed Book M pages 221-223 dated August 16,1784, Samuel and wife Ann(Sarah Ann) sell for 300 pounds current money of Virginia 400 acres of land to John Garnett of same county. We know that Samuels first wife was named Sarah but find his wife's name listed as Ann in this document, there is no doubt but that this is the mother of his children. She apparently died before 1787 as Samuel moved to Kentucky. Samuel married Sarah Pound, a widow April 11, 1787 and they had no children.
Nelson County deed book no. 3, page 107- Samuel selling tract of land where he now lives dated 1793 to James Brown, containing 125 acres. In 1793, Samuel and Sarah sell to Beal Dorsey for 40 pounds current money of the State of Caintucky, 112 1/2 acres of land situated on Simmons Creek, part of a tract of land Samuel received from Patrick McGee, the original land patent in the name of John E. Kine. Another deed dated August 13,1793 selling for 40 pounds current money of the State of Caintucky, 112 1/2 acres to Job Eldridge, also located on Simsons Creek, Nelson Co, Kentucky.

Nancy Stigler
F, #3571, d. about 1824
Nancy Stigler married Beall Dorsey, son of Charles and Lydia Dorsey of Nelson County, Kentucky, who came to Kentucky from Frederick Co. Maryland. They lived in Nelson County until around 1805 when they moved to Gallatin Co., Ky. As Beall's brother Charles owned a considerable amount of land in that area. Beall and Nancy owned 196 acres of land on Corn and Looms Creek in Gallatin, which they sold in 1807 and moved to Hardin County Kentucky. Their eldest daughter, Lydia was married July 14, 1807 to William H. Scott, Son of George. their other children married in Hardin Co. Beall died in 1822 leaving a will that his property be sold, he owned 582 acres on Cedar Creek, and a portion used to purchase property for Nancy. It is possible that Nancy died shortly after Beall because there is a guardian bond naming Abraham VanMatre as guardian of the youngest daughter, Corrina.
