Martha ("Patsy") Phelps

F, #2639, b. 20 June 1737, d. 8 March 1767
This person is confused with James Thomas Powhatan Bowling (9 Jan 1756-7 Aug 1824) son of Major John Kennon Bolling II and Elizabeth Blair Bolling Bland. This person may not exist as a son of Benjamin Bolling and Martha Phelps.

There is a possible DNA link with common ancestor Benjamin Bolling and Martha Phelps, but... they have no tree. and suggested trees are with the above people.

MiscDNA Matches - Excellent. 4/24/2024
I have 107 DNA matches with Benjamin Bolling. Scott has 264! (does he have more than one path?)
Using thrulines, Benjamin Bolling b1734 or Martha Phelps b1737 show common ancestor Benjamin Bolling and martha Phelps. Also true through Elizabeth. But if you choose a child known to have Chrity as their mother, it will only show Benjamin Bolling. I'm assuming this means that Benjamin Bolling b1734 is not a child of Charity but of Martha Phelps. (it does NOT say who her parents are! or even her name for that matter).

1/2024 111 matches
15 with Delaney

117 DNA matches, but they do not prove Martha Phelps is the name of the mother nor of course who her parents were. Only Benjamin and Joseph John is listed as half.
15 with Delaney and the rest with siblings

1/2024 Scott 241 matches! across a whole bunch of children! none as half.
MiscParents: DNA. See the DNA matches of Scott Borgmier and Judith Nicholls to other children of both John Phelps and Mary Catherine Gibson.

Actually, there is little known about ANY of the daughters of John Phelps except that the ones that were still alive were mentioned in his will. NO grandchildren are mentioned in the will.

The book Pocahontas to Benjamin Bolling says Mary Patsy Phelps father was Colonel Thomas Phelps (1700-1751). not Captain John Phelps (1705 - 1772) as most trees have. He would have been a brother of John Phelps. Thomas Phelps and Elizabeth Patterson (1706-1772)have a child named Mary but nothing is listed for her. I see no will for Thomas.

Comment to the source below:
Is documentation available that connects Martha Phelps Bolling to John Phelps. I am listed as having .039% of John Phelps and Mary Catherine Gibson's DNA but I have not come across documentation other than DNA.
Answer:
I couldn't locate any primary sources.

"There is no proof that Martha "Patsy" Phelps is the daughter of John Phelps (1705-1772)."

John Phelps' mother was named Martha Margaret or Margaret Martha.
___________
She was dead before John Phelps died, so she would not have been mentioned in his will, but children could have been:
John Phelps
"He died in Bedford County in 1772, and his will, recorded in Will Book "A," page 137, mentions wife Mary; children: Jane, Judith, Sarah, Ann, Mary, Betty, John, and Aggey.
______________
She is supposed to be from Albemarle Co., Va. In researching Albemarle I have found a William Phelps and a Thomas Phelps there. But whether Martha belongs to one of them or not I just don't know. She was supposed to have Native Americn blood? She died in 1767 at the birth of their daughter Elizabeth?

MiscMelungeon. The following is from Kathy Lindhout: [email protected]: (I do not know if Melungeons truly exist, if they are fiction, or if this is just an assumption on her part). Benjamin Bowling was a Melungeon and a close friend of Christopher Gist, a famous backwoods frontiersman. Benjamin's wife, Patsy Phelps was also a Virginia Melungeon and her mother was believed to have been a "Gibson".

During that time, Childer's regiment marched through Georgia. Earlier, he was in the Battle of Stono Ferry. Childers was in the Battle of Guilford Courthouse according to his court statement. He served with the NC Continental Line until May 1781, when he was honorably discharged at Cross Creek NC. He married Sarah Jeffries in VA in 1785, & moved to Floyd Co. KY by 1805.

Marriage16 April 1785In Buckingham County, Virginia, United States. Buckingham County VA Clerk?s Declaration of Marriage

I, Rolfe Eldridge, Clerk of the County Court of Buckingham in the State of Virginia hereby certify that I have carefully examined the records and files of my office and have not been able to find any register returned of the marriage of Pleasant Childers and Sarah Jeffries, but that a license issued from this office for that purpose appears by a bond given on the 30th day of March 1785 of which the following is a copy:

?Know all men by these presents that we, Pleasant Childers and John Jeffries are held and firmly bound unto the Governor and Council of the Commonwealth of Virginia and their successors in the sum of fifty pounds current money, to which payment well and truly to be paid, we bind ourselves, our heirs, executors, and administrators jointly and severally firmy by here presents. Sealed with our seals and dated this 30th day of March 1785. Whereas a marriage is shortly intended to be had and solemnized between the above bound Pleasant Childers and Sarah Jeffries. Now the condition of the above obligation is such that if there be no lawful cause to obstruct the said marriage then the above obligation to be void else to remain in full force and (effect?)
Pleasant Childers (seal)
John Jeffries (seal)?

That no register is found here, ought to raise no presumption that the marriage did take place, as it has happened as often as otherwise, that ministers of the Gospel have failed to return to the office lists of marriages solemnized by them.
In testimony whereof, I hereto set my hand and affix the seal of my office this twenty-sixth day of December in the year one thousand, eight hundred and fifty.

48 DNA matches with children of Sarah Jeffries, 7 other children, 19 on my Unknown. Some are half, which may mean Sarah Jeffries was not the wife?
MiscParents. She matches with Nathaniel Jeffries and Mary Tate, BUT how do the dates work? And she comes up with siblings that other people assign to the other wife, Steen. BUT I do not have parents for her on Ancestry and they decide to go with Mary Tate AND we get very good matches with Mary Tate's father William Tate (see)and mother Sarah Skelton (see)DNA matches continue up the tree. I have no idea who the other children's mother is, but it appears that Sarah's mother and ancestry is Tate. It's also a mystery because neither mother appears to have died young.

DaughterRachel Spencer (b. 1796)
Birth1765In Wilkes County, North Carolina, British America.1
Death1830At age ~65. Note, his death in 1785 would be before 2 of his children were born. But there is no evidence of his death anyway!1
MiscDNA Matches? Almost as if Joseph Charles is our William David's grandfather, but the William David we have is not his father...

Later. 5 DNA matches, but are called half, 2 with Rachel and 1 with "David Joseph" (1806-1891), 2 with William (1814).

DNA matches confusing. There may be some problem here, especially with the wife... Only 2 matches but these are not children from my list, and wrong kind of dates for his children.
MiscParents: ? He also would not have been born in North Carolina if he were the son of Joseph Charles? Too many Spencers, not enough info!1
Residence7 August 1820In Lee, Virginia, United States. 1820 US Census. Could be another William, like our ancestor William... but there are male and female 45 or older and William would have been 55.2
Residence1830In Lee County, Virginia, United States. This could fit. There is a free white male 60-69, but there is also a free white female 60-69, so he got another wife or Margaret Miller did not die in 1816 (no evidence anyway). Then he died soon thereafter if the death date has any validity.3
