Son | Henry Ratliff (b. 1778, d. 1840) |
Son | Moses Ratliff (b. 1780, d. 1882) |
Birth | 1732 | In Maryland or Virginia. Geneanet calls him Reuben Henry and has a separate William born in 1730 and dying 1821 in Pike Co., KY.1,2 |
Marriage | about 1749 | DNA seems to like Frances Holloway (1734-1825) dau of John Hollowell (1695-1752).
Some say his wife is Elizabeth Harrison, dau of William Harrison III and Margaret Spencer Maupin.
Others have Frances Elizabeth Shepherd (1734-1800)with no sources of any sort for a marriage or for her that I have found so far.
And Frances Hancock (1734 - after 1820)Tazewell, VA2 |
Death | 1810 | At age ~78 in Green, Kentucky, United States.2 |
Misc | | DNA Matches - good. Jan 2024 I only have 57 matches through Reuben b1732. 18 through Richard called half, 7 through Silas, 4 through Ruben called half, 4 through Elizabeth (1760-1852), one through a Mary Jane (1760-1845), and 23 through John. Richard and Reuben are half.
April 2024 Scott has 192 matches with Reuben. Some are half, some are not.
Elizabeth was born in North Carolina according to the trees with the most sources and she has a findagrave. Mary also suspect - marries in North Carolina, born in Virginia, dies in Tennessee.
The halfs could argue for another wife...
Judy has 100 matches on Reuben through Nathaniel R (Reuben?), John and Silas (68)but both are called half.
Scott has 173 matches with "William Rueben "Old William" Ratliff Ratclyffe", A lot of the names are not in my list, but he has 62 matches with John (my pick) called half and 29 with William the reverend. The path with William is through Alexander. |
Misc | | William? Could be son Reuben, who might be Nathaniel Reuben, other wives assigned to him, so there may be two people... A Nathaniel and a Reuben? Martha Polly Farmer Phoebe
And another William... son of Robert Ratliff born 1731 married Susannah Thomas Find a Grave, database and images (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/44911098/william-ratcliff: accessed 31 August 2023), memorial page for William Ratcliff (31 Mar 1731–1825), Find a Grave Memorial ID 44911098; Burial Details Unknown; Maintained by Della Lilly (contributor 46905597).3 |
Misc | | Reuben "Old William." Reuben "Old William" Ratcliff
Not confident that this Reuben was called "Old William". Of course one of his first names might have been William. Some also have a brother named William.
1) Our guy, and calls him "Old William" Has him in Green City, Kentucky in 1800 and dying there in 1810 https://mckaystevens.us/genealogy/getperson.php?personID=I1256&tree=1&sitever=standard

Margaret Frances Holloway
F, #2557, b. about 1734, d. 1825
Some say she is Frances Elizabeth Shepherd, daughter of George Shepherd and Elizabeth Mary Angelica Day. They have a child named Elizabeth, maybe...
Some say she is Margaret Frances and that name is what Scott's DNA links to. But of course that does not mean a NAME... only a position in a tree and siblings.
Or Elizabeth Harrison (1737-1791.)

And Frances Hancock (1734 - after 1820)Tazewell, VA1 |
Death | 1825 | Some have her dying in Tazewell, VA. Her husband died in Kentucky in 1810. Did she move back to Virginia, maybe with a child? |
Misc | | DNA Matches. 61 DNA matches through 5 other children and 23 with John. All full.
Scott has 171 matches through many children of Frances Holowell
This means only that we are related to these children and some of them were a family. It says nothing about the names of their parents. |
Misc | | Reuben's wife's name? Elizabeth is sometimes used in/for/as well as other parts of the name of Reuben's wife. |
Misc | | Maiden name. Maybe Holloway but Harrison is also mentioned. Harrison is sometimes used as a name in the family. I think the Harrison is a conflation of two families and not ours.
Example at Wikitree, but seems not to be our family children's names... and this seems to be a Quaker wing... https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Harrison-12427 Elizabeth Ratcliff formerly Harrison Born 25 Jun 1737 in Middletown, York, Colony of Virginia Daughter of William Harrison and Margaret (Maupin) Harrison Sister of William Harrison IV Wife of William Ratcliff — married [date unknown] [location unknown] Mother of Mary Ratcliff, Harrison Ratcliff, William Ratcliff, John Ratcliff, Gideon Ratcliff and Isaac Ratcliff Died 5 Feb 1791 at age 53 in Middletown, York, Virginia, United States |

COL JOHN Speaker of the House of Burgesses in Williamsburg, Virginia HOLLOWAY married Elizabeth Jekyll Catesby Cocke Holloway and had 1 child. He passed away on 14 Dec 1734 in Williamsburg, James, Virginia, USA." Wife Elizabeth Catesby and child Frances.
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hollowell-71 This includes a Hollowell family bible that does not have a Frances, but it clearly is not complete.
I see in a Quaker book that both Hollowell and Holloway gave money for Quaker things. Including this: "Holloway 1702, 2, 3 John gave 300 lbs tobacco toward the building of a MH on the south branch of the Nansemond River; mbr of this PM" Tributary of the James. way south in VA, near NC.
DNA matches with a Dinah Hollowell, dau of a John Hollowell (1695-1743), but she was born in North Carolina in 1735, or so someone claims... but wait, her father John and mother were born and died in Norfolk, VA! His father John was Quaker. ________ Some people have a different John Holloway (1695-1752)who married Sarah Roundtree (1698-1752) The couple is on familysearch but no child Margaret or Frances but that does not mean she wasn't their child. Married 1727, ancestry record (Sarah Rountree). The Holloways were devout quakers. The Rountree family in Britain who makes candy are Quaker. Some Rountrees were in Nansemond County which is where the Holloways were. Three brothers, apparently. His wife is Sarah, so it would be a surprise if they did not have a daughter or granddaughter named Sarah. https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/86490834/person/122478770348/facts https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/27717844/john-hollowell
Margaret Frances Hollowell was born when her mother Elizabeth Catesby was 53 years old if her birth date is correct.
This tree has a lot of info about a John Holloway but nothing but the 1820 census (Frances Ratliff) for Margaret Frances Holloway. https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/100407182/person/240176098001/facts
For the John Holloway (1666-1734) who married Elizabeth Catesby Cocke, this record says "Despite the many who have claimed descent from him, he died without issue." The parents of this John were listed as George Holloway (1641-1688) and Elizabeth Greenough Carmack (1640-1700) John Holloway page 3, Ancestry https://www.ancestry.com/mediaui-viewer/collection/1030/tree/49663547/person/292151772375/media/5eb6867b-2998-434c-b854-c9fb6af3b297?indiv=try&h&_phsrc=Sgq2864&pid=292151772375&db. Reuben Ratliff, Jr
M, #2559, b. 1759, d. 19 October 1852
Some believe he was born in Halifax County, Virginia
Son of Reuben & Frances Ratliff.
Married his cousin, Phoebe Ratliff on July 1, 1786 in Franklin Co., VA d/o Silas Ratliff & Elizabeth?
Rev. War soldier
Sept 1776 - in services of Capt. Gilbert Christy of Long Island on the Holston River, Washington Co., VA.
May 1781 - Spy and Ranger under Capt. Arter & Col. Green against the Tories, Henry County, NC. Fought until 1785.
After his discharge, he moved to Russell, Tazwell Co.,VA.
Moved to Morgan Co. ca 1835. Found in the 1850 Census for Morgan Co., VA, living with his daughter Hannah & her husband, David Lykins.
There is much confusion over his birth year. According to the DAR headstone, it was 1759. According to the math (d.1852 at age 84) it would have been 1768. According to the Census records, it is 1767.
If he was 84 at the time of his death, as his original headstone states, then he would have been born in 1768 or possibly 1767, depending on the month.
