John Ratliff

M, #2539, b. about 1750, d. 1845
John Ratliff was a blacksmith and gunsmith in this area in the 1790s. He married Charlotte “Lottie” White, daughter of Abednego White, a prosperous merchant and farmer in Tazewell and Russell Counties. (Source: "The First Settlers" Buchanan Co., VA) John (born in 1782-died in 1835, in Jackson Co., MS, at age 53) came to Russell Co., VA and settled in 1795. He was a gunsmith and was trained probably in Lancaster Co., VA. He opened the Salt Works in 1801.

Is he the person who married Annie Dobbs? DNA says yes.

He is often called John A. Ratliff and sometimes John S. Ratliff... There must be two people, but who is who?
Said to be John Ratliff and Charlotte White

Someone else says he died in Mississippi (also see land transaction by some John Ratliff in Mississippi). See the record on this. It is a John Ratlif with 4 males and 3 females. Unlikely he could have managed that after he left Lottie White...

There is a findagrave that is a mess with two wives and has him dying in Crawford County, Arkansas in 1832. Must be another John who married Annie Dobbs (1752-1816)?

"John RATLIFF was born in Augusta County, Virginia. He was the son of Ruben RATLIFF and Francis ???. John died in Jackson County, Missouri. He married Charlotte WHITE in Russell County, Virginia. John and Charlotte's marriage record was destroyed in the Russell COunty courthouse fire. She was born 12 February 774 in Prince George County, Maryland. She was the daughter of Aednego WHITE and Mary???. Charlotte died in Tazewell County, Virginia. "

MiscWives. He may have had a wife before Charlotte White. Annie Dobbs (1752–1816) whom he may have married around 1772. BUT for that to be the case, his birth year is off by a number of years. His first child by her in lists was born in 1780 when he would have been 14.

I am adding Annie Dobbs and her children because DNA seems to indicate they and I are descended from John Ratliff.4

Jan 2024. 65 matches, 21 with my John, 15 with Richard but that's tree issues. Many called half. The ones with John are ONLY with his son Geroge W. so trees are wrong...

58 matches over multiple children. NOTE, White married him in 1801 according to my tree. The children born before that are half. The ones in my list after are full. 18 matches with John.

Scott's DNA matches shockingly well, full relatives, with the children of William Ratliff (1762-1816) then Alexander (1815-1895) then Marthenia which is ridiculous.

MiscDNA Matches - good. Feb 2024
I have 56 matches with Charlotte. 21 with John and 15 with Richard. Mary called half, the rest full.

Scott has 115 matches with Charlotte White. Mary and Reuben are called half. 51 with Richard and only 22 with John but that's because of bad trees I think.
Looking another way, 10 matches with John but 18 under Richard, but that's due to tree error putting our ancestors under Richard. Lydia, Abednego, Shadrack, William, Richard are called full. Reuben is called half along with Mary.

55 DNA matches to a bunch of children. Need to follow their lines because some of them are not in my tree... 21 to apparently our John Ratliff. All called full but Mary who is half. Mary is in my list, but maybe another wife?

William M. Ratliff

M, #2541, b. 1814, d. between 1866 and 1870
William was a farmer. He was the son of Charlotte "Lottie" White and John Ratliff. There are no records showing William's middle name. The only record that could be located indicating a middle initial was in his son Jacob M. (erroneously listed as John) Ratliff's death record as W. M. Ratcliff. It has been listed as Muncie and as Matney but it is likely that he had no actual middle name.

Abednego ("Benjamin") White

M, #2547, b. 1734, d. circa 1820
ABEDNEGO BENJAMIN WHITE (Whight; Wight),was born in Prince Georges Co. MD 1734 (1776c of MD) and died in Tazewell Co. VA [TCV] circa Feb 1820. Abednego may have been a brother of Shadrack White who m. Gledis and who is listed in Washington Co. VA records as early as the 1770's. This Shadrack brought with him toe the area an already aged mother named Mary, also mentioned in Washington Co. records. Abednego's parentage has not been established; however, the gleanings below from the Order Books of TCV provide some clues to assist the researcher in further tracing of this family. Firstly, there were several branches of WHITE (etc.) in the Prince Georges Co. MD area, a number of whom were Quakers. The recording of the birth of Abednego's daughter, Charlotte, in the records of St. John's Anglican (now Episcopal) Parish in that county indicates that the family from which ABEDNEGO derived was of the conformist persuasion (Established Church). Secondly, the court statement that his name was originally "Whight" (Wight?) will also likely be of research benefit. There was a family "Wight" in the Prince Georges Co. MD vicinity, for example, Mary Wight m. (1) Samuel Taylor who d. 1761; lived at "Taylor's Pasture"; Mary's dau., Verlinda Taylor m. Moses Orme, Jr., s/o Moses Orme Sr. & Anne Macknew (whose brother, William Macknew was an early settler to Fincastle, now Washington Co. VA, in 1773).

Abednego Benjamin White was already circa 36 years old when he m. cl770, MARY . By 1776, they had had the following children:

A.l. (female) WHITE, b. cl771-2; age4y in 1776c ofMD; not named in Abednego's estate. She might have died as a child or remained in MD.

A.2. CHARLOTTE WHITE, b. Prince Georges Co. MD 12 Feb 1774, "d/o Benjamin & Mary White"; d. in Buchanan or Tazewell Co. VA after 1850; m. c 1796-8, JOHN RATCLIFFE [Ratliff; Ratliffe, Radcliff, etc.] (c 1765-c 1837), believed by Ratcliffe/Radcliffe researcher, Mr. Lany Ratliff, St. Albans, WV to have been the s/o Reuben Ratcliff & Frances , a presumption for which substantial information exists to support. Charlotte is listed in the 1776c of Pr. Georges Co. MD as the female age 3y (She was a. 2y, "going-on" three years at the census taking.). As their children shall be a subject of future publication by Mr. Larry Ratliff, I will enumerate here only a plain listing of their children, as known or by conjecture: Richard; Lydia (Lydia married Richard Ratcliff, s/o Richard Ratcliffe, Sr. of Montgomery, my ancestors); Abednego Benjamin; Shadrack; Elijah (?); Reuben; Rebecca (m. Samuel Steel!); William, and Nancy (?).

Indeed, given his age, Abednego White may have been married before he married Mary . After her death, he married bet 1783-89, (2) ELIZABETH, wid. of George STEELE. The Steele family had long been in Pr. Georges Co. MD. where on 22 Dec 1752 in St. John's Parish, a Lvdia Steele was christened. A Mary Steel m. there on 03 Oct 1796 to Richard Bryan, also in St. John's Parish.
