Misc | | A Family Story. A Watkins Mill Story - by Nada Borgmier
When the Watkins Mill was at its highest peak, a woman named Eudora Cockrell and a young man named George Borgmier were workers on the farm. Dora was the cook at the big house, and George was a farm hand. They met, and the inevitable happened -- they fell in love and were married.
After they were married, they continued working on the farm. The family numbered three, because Eudora had a small son by a previous marriage.
After about two months, Mrs. Watkins told Dora that she (Mrs. Watkins) was ill and she was going to Kansas City to be near her physician, and was taking the children. Dora would be in complete charge of the house.
Dora had all the cooking and part of the cleaning to do. All she didn't have to do was to clean the fireplaces, and other parts of the cleaning, which slaves did.
When Dora fixed a meal, she had to go to the basement and get the food. From the fruit cellar, whe got all the fruit she needed. Then from the vegetable cellar, came all the vegetables. From the canned food cellar, cam the other parts of the meal. Besides cooking for the family, she had to cook for all the slaves and the other workers whose jobs were near the house.
Cleaning the house was no easy job. All the rooms had to be cleaned by hand, as there obviously were no vacuum cleaners, or any other device that made cleaning easy. Making the beds in the three-story house would be a job by itself. (At that time, Dora was only 5 feet tall and weighted less than 100 pounds.)
Besides the big house, she had her own house and family to take care of. They had a little two-room cottage. Compared to the big house, I imagine that her little house was cramped.
George and Eudora worked on the farm for about a year and a half after they were married. Then they bought a farm of their own in Cass County where they lived for about five years. After selling that farm, they bought another near Liberty. During this time, the family had grown to three children: Ellis, Mabel and Harry. They lived in Liberty for four or five years, then bought a farm near Lawson where they lived for the rest of their lives. Leo, John (my father), and Ethel were born on this farm.
How do I know all this? George and Eudora were my grandparents.
