I'm suspicious of this person as the first wife. First, she was born in Pennsylvania and her parents died there. How did she get to Virginia to marry Nathaniel? Also, the death dates given for her did not give him time to marry Mary Tate and have the children we know (via DNA) do not belong to her. I know Mary Tate is a wife and the mother of my ancestor because DNA fits very well with Mary Tate family and her parents.

Also, even if she did marry a Nathaniel (or Nathan) Jeffries (or similar), there is such a person in Pennsylvania in the records but I don't now his wife's name.

I think the popularity of this name comes from the DAR and SAR records.

Confusions about John Weir son of Hugh Weir... I think more than one John Weir are being confused with one another. One is claimed to have married a Jean Bell. I'll leave it for descendants to figure out...

Hugh did mention a son John in his will, but who was he?

I also see a Jonathan Weir assigned to Hugh Weir and Margaret McEwan born in 1750, also messed up with Pennsylvania. And this one died in 1832 in Blount, Tennessee. With a DAR record. With a findagrave entry having him also born in Tennessee in 1750.

Hugh Weir

Hugh was born about 1746. He married Mary Mckee 1766 in Kerrs Creek, Augusta, Virginia. Hugh was in a tax record in 1783 in Greene, Tennessee, United States.[1]

In the 1800 census, Hugh was in Blount County, Tennessee.[2] In the 1810 census, Hugh was back in Rockbridge, Virginia, United States.[3]

In the 1820 census, Hugh was in Lexington, Rockbridge, Virginia, United States.[4]

Hugh died on 16 July 1822 and was buried in McKee Cemetery, Rockbridge County, Virginia, United States.[5] Hugh's will passed probate on 5 August 1822 in Rockbridge, Virginia, United States.[6]

Hugh Weir in 1821 left $150.00 in his will to the American Board of Foreign Missions to educate a Hindoo boy, who was to bear his name after baptism. [7]

John Cowan

John Cowan was born December 14, 1768, in what is now Rockbridge Co, VA, the son of Samuel Cowan and Ann Walker. Rockbridge Co, which is nestled between the Blue Ridge and the Allegheny Mountains at the northern end of the Valley of Virginia, was then on the frontier. Rockbridge County was formed in 1778. When John was born, the area where the Cowans lived was part of Augusta County. The Cowans probably lived near other family members along Hays and Walker creeks, near the present-day Augusta-Rockbridge county line. There were many other Scotch-Irish families in the area, and kinsmen of the Cowans and Walkers: the Moores, Campbells, Weirs, Todds, Houstons, and Breckenridges.
