To confuse it all, there are two John Brown people in the area.

The only known relationship to Martha (other than her husbands and children) is that of her sister, Mary. She was known as "Mrs Mary" (maiden name unknown) who married to 1) Joseph Tanner, and 2) to Gilbert Platt. Mary was called "Sister Platt" in the will of her brother-in-law, Thomas Shippey (the 1st husband of this Martha).[2]

Thomas Jefferson

M, #4722, b. about 1640, d. November 1697
GrGrandfather of Thomas Jefferson 3rd US President

Thomas Jefferson, Sr., first settled in Henrico Southside, living at Osborne's Plantation across the James River from Farrar's Island and near Kingsland, home of the Branch family. His plantation was located in the Curles Section of the James River, south of the present-day city of Richmond, Virginia. This is near where the river begins it's snake-like path past Flower Dew Hundred (an area that was represented in the first Virginia Assembly of 1619 at Jamestown by (Col.) John Jeafferson II, presumed to have been Thomas Jefferson Sr.'s great-uncle, from Suffolk, England). It would be logical for a young man to enter a new country in the area where he already had relations.

Thomas Jefferson, Sr., married Mary Branch, daughter of Christopher Branch, Jr., shortly before 1678 when her grandfather, Christopher Branch, Sr., called her my granddaughter Mary Branch, wife of Thomas Jefferson, in his will. He also named Thomas as his executor. This will was signed June 20, 1678, & proven February 20, 1682.[4].

Mary Branch descended from the landed gentry of Abingdon, Berkshire, England. Her grandfather, Christopher Branch, had emigrated to Virginia in March 1620[5]. He was an "old planter" at Arrowhattocks on the James River, Henrico Southside and later at Kingsland. He was the neighbor of John Jeaffreson, the Farrars, and a number of related families living on Swift Creek. His family were among the fortunate who were not massacred in the Indian uprising of 1622. He was a Burgess in 1639 and a Justice 1656. His will[6] names "grandaughter Mary Branch, wife of Thomas Jefferson," who was named as executor of his will.[7]

Thomas Jefferson and Mary Branch Jefferson had three children: a daughter, named Mary, born in early 1679, followed by Captain Thomas Jefferson II, born November 20, 1679, and another daughter, Martha Jefferson, born February 23, 1682. All were born at Osborne's Plantation in Henrico County, English colony of Virginia.

Thomas and Mary Jefferson raised their family at "Jefferson's Landing," Osborne's Plantation, the Curles, Henrico County, Virginia. He died there in November 1697 and his Will was proven in Henrico County on December 7, 1697.

Mary, Thomas' wife, remarried in 1701 to planter Joseph Mattox (aka "Maddox"). She died a few years later in Charles City County, English Province of Virginia.

Elizabeth ("Lucy") Jeffries

F, #4724, b. about 1764, d. 1821
This must be the "Lucy" in some lists. Nathaniel's will names a Lucy Brown in one place and a Lucy Childress. Did she also marry a Brown?

Her sister Sarah married Mosby's brother Pleasant Childers.

Birthabout 17641,2
Marriage8 March 1785In West Virginia, United States. My guess is Elizabeth is the daughter of Nathaniel Jeffries called "Lucy" in my list. The reason is that Mosby's brother Pleasant married another daughter of Nathaniel: Sarah. I am confused by so many people having hem in Nathaniel's tree with a wife/mother of Elizabeth/Lucy as Mary Chalfant. No one has any evidence in their trees for that marriage.

Lucy did marry a Childress/Childers because "Lucy Childress" is named in Nathaniel Jeffries will.

DNA also seems to confirm this, but it is a bit confusing in places. She is only a half sister. Different mother and not sure who her mother is. What I have is not what most of the trees have but they did not convince me and since this is not an ancestor, I'm not spending more time on this...3,4,1,5

Jamestowne Society Seventeenth Century Qualifying Ancestors is a list of individuals who have met their criteria to be included as a qualifying ancestor. One of the criteria is membership in the Virginia Council or House of Burgesses prior to 1700. The Assembly of 2 March 1642-3 names Matthew Gough from Henrico in The Virginia Colonial Register (Wm. Stanard). He is on record as serving only the one term. The Jamestowne Society list has included this Matthew Gough twice on both the main list and detailed individual list as: Mathew Gogh and Matthew Gough.3
MiscElizabeth's father? Note the ages of the supposed parents when Mattahew is born. I see trees with Elizabeth Branch the daughter of William, sister to Matthew. Makes more sense.
