He was a ancient planter, and a shareholder in the Virginia Company. He came to Virginia on the Starr in May 1611

Father of Matthew Gooch? This seems quite imaginary. The tree in The history and antiquities of the county of Suffolk: with genealogical and architectural notices of its several towns and villages does not have a Matthew son of William, nor is there any connection. The only "evidence" is something the Branch family wrote about Elizabeth who married Thomas Branch. In fact, William Branch it appears had no heirs and his property reverted to the state.²
