Elizabeth
F, #3231, b. 1805
She is apparently not Elizabeth Medlin Bowlen. Her husband William Allen Bowlen was born in 1799 in South Carolina, died in 1848 and buried in California, Moniteau County, Missouri, USA. This Elizabeth died in Moniteau County, Mo in 1877.
Birth | 1805 | In Kentucky, United States.1 |
Marriage | about 1848 | Or not... |
Misc | 1850 | Guardianship of the Ratliff children. She is appointed guardian of "persons and estates of James M., Washington, Henry W., Nancy A., and Elizabeth L. Ratliff; minor heirs of John Ratliff, decd."
The Bowlin children continue to live with her but not in 1860.2 |
Residence | 1850 | In Carroll, Platte, Missouri, United States.1 |
Occupation | 1850 | Farmer.1 |
Misc | 1850 | Estate of William Bowlin.3 |
Misc | 1851 | Possible marriage. Lewis Jones married a McCollum.
The Heirs of William Bowlin states that "Lewis Jones and widow Bowlin were married 1851"
By that they mean Isabuder McCollum, or is it Isabell?
Comment re this declaration of Elizabeth Bowlin... It occurred to me that the "Elizabeth Bowlin" at the bottom, widow of William Bowlin, might actually be my gg-grandmother Isabuder McCollum. She may be giving up rights to her father-in-law's estate, as she and William Jr had no children and were married only about one year before his death. Her name is misspelled many places, she did not read or write. People had trouble with her unusual name, which two cousins shared. |
Residence | 1860 | In Carroll, Platte, Missouri, United States. Possibly living with Elizabeth Ratliff, but the age is wrong for Elizabeth Bowlin? Age 49 would have her born in 1811.4 |

The widow who married Lewis Jones is Isabruder McCollum. Some say maybe her first name is mispronounced as Elizabeth? This would be a wife of the son William, who also died.

Hannah McCampbell
F, #3239, b. 1713, d. 1758
Hannah McCampbell
Familysearch has Hannah McCampbell with parents John McCampbell and Ann Gilmore, but it's not convincing. First this Hannah is born before marriage, but there are two Hannahs and the other one married Moses Cunningham.
Someone commented somewehre that Telford married Hannah McCampbell and her ancestor was her sister Sarah. Also note a reference to a McCampbell in Alexander Hugh's records.
No one seems to know which person Hannah and Sarah married. Alexander Telford or Moses Cunningham.
Parents
Birth | 1713 | In County Tyrone, Ireland. |
Marriage | circa 1730 | In County Tyrone, Ireland. Or possibly Hannah's sister Sarah. He apparently married either Hannah or Sarah McCampbell. Most of the books say that Hannah married a Cunningham (probably Moses) and Sarah married Alexander Telford. Birth dates are not known, but usually given much too late for Sarah or Hannah to be the mother of the children, but I'm putting her in assuming her actual birth date is more like 1712 than 1728.
An answer to the birth dates problem is he actually had 3 wives. Note that there is a 15 year gap between Elizabeth and William. if McCampbell is his third wife, she could have been born much later than if she is the mother of all 5 children. I have seen a suggestion of a wife named Mary Jennings.
BUT Hannah McCampbell born 1743 does not work! That's what I see on a McCampbell family data sheet. OK for Moses, but not for Alexander. Findagrave has two Hannahs in the family which is a solution but ridiculous!
McCampbell Genealogy also says they were born too late. This also switches the wives... She is born in 1745, he dies in 1781.
M6. Hannah, married Cunningham. No further record. M7. Sarah McCampbell born about 1745, married Alexander Tilford (Telford). Alexander Tilford was a captain in the Revolutionary Army, and was killed in the Battle of Guilford Court House, N.C., in 1781. 7 children born.
I have 5 children from this wife, born from 1733 to 1757.1,2 |
Death | 1758 | At age ~45. Was this in the Kerr's Creek Massacre? "In the fall of 1759, the two Telford boys walked home, possibly from school. Their walk turned into a run. Breathless, they told of a naked man they saw hiding behind a tree. No one thought twice about their tale until later."3 |

Sargeant William Tilford
M, #3242, b. 2 November 1750, d. 1 September 1832
William Tilford or Telford, son of Alexander Telford & Hannah McCampbell. He was born about 1750 in Northern Ireland and died September 1, 1832 in Jefferson County, Indiana.
When he was about 10 years old his family emigrated from Ireland to Virginia. He was a strong Scotch Presbyterian; his family (possibly grandfather) had fled from Scotland to Ireland to avoid persecution of their faith.
Oct. 10, 1774 he was in the Battle of Point Pleasant (now in West Virginia) in Lord Dunmore's War.
In 1780 he married Isabella Weir, with whom he had 5 known children: William Jr., Samuel, Alexander, Mary, & Sarah Jane.
William was in the American Revolution, and was in the Siege of Yorktown, autumn of 1781, in Capt. Gray's Virginia Infantry.
His wife Isabella died in 1791. Around this time he moved to Kentucky with other family members, then on to Indiana.
In 1798 he married Rebecca McClung. (It is unclear whether McClung is her maiden name or surname from a previous marriage; and where he was living when they married.)
William is buried on the farm of his son Alexander near Kent, Jefferson Co., Indiana.

Alexander Hugh Telford
M, #3246, b. 1 June 1760, d. 22 May 1844
Son of Alexander Tedford/Telford and Mary Gilmore. An affidavit he wrote to receive his pension states he was born in Augusta Co., VA., although one family tradition has it that he was born en route during his family's emigration from Ireland to America.
He was a rifleman in the American Revolution and was in the Siege of Yorktown (York Co., VA). He and his company were discharged about 3 days before the surrender of Corwallis, due to most of them being ill.
Alexander Tedford moved from Augusta Co., VA to Scott Co., KY where he bought and improved a farm about 4 miles from Georgetown, KY.
He married twice, to Elizabeth McClung and Mary McCampbell. He had seven known children, all born in KY (Mary Ann, Andrew, John Gilmore & Nancy with first wife; James, Jane McKee & Findlay with second wife). In KY the government designated his land "military reserve", so he lost it all. He worked as a stone mason until he earned enough to move to Miami Co., OH, where he bought Spinning Farm on the Mad River near Dayton, OH. There he lost nearly all his horses and cattle from disease called "sick stomach", so he sold that farm at great sacrifice. He then moved to Troy, OH, and bought four hundred acres of land. He lived in a sheep pen the first winter, but soon bought another farm on the Big Troy River and lived prosperously.
In 1807 or 1808 he started the first Presbyterian church in Troy, OH in his own log house.
He retired and lived on his farm until his death.
