Sargeant Nathan Hale Pryor
M, #4042, b. about 1775, d. 10 June 1831
Nathaniel Hale Pryor was born in Amherst County, Virginia, about forty miles southwest of Charlottesville and Monticello, in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. No record of his birth date has been found, but he probably was about the same age as his cousin, Charles Floyd, who was born in 1782. His family moved to Louisville, in frontier Kentucky, when he was eleven, and he joined the expedition on October 20, 1803, at Clarksville, Indiana—one of nine recruits from Kentucky. In 1798 he had married Margaret Patton, but a descendant, John H. Pryor, speculates that since Lewis had instructed Clark to take only unmarried men, his recruitment suggests that either Margaret had died, or else the two were divorced by that time.
Perhaps no other member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition has had more places named for him, other than the captains themselves. In Montana, Pryor was the namesake for the town of Pryor, the Pryor Mountains, Pryor Creek, and the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Preserve. In Oklahoma, the town of Pryor and Pryor Creek are named for him.
It is astonishing to think of all of the famous men and women encoun tered by Nathaniel Hale Pryor during his lifelong odyssey. How many other men in history had the opportunity to associate with, be involved with, or to spend time with the likes of Lewis, Clark, the other men of the Expedition, Sacagawea, Pomp, various Indian chiefs, including Sheheke, Clermont, and Dutch, General George Rogers Clark, William Henry Harrison, Tecumseh, the Prophet, Andrew Jackson, Sam Houston, Davy Crockett, Thomas Nuttall, early traders and explorers, etc., not to mention the momentous events in which he was involved, such as the Voyage of Discovery, and the Battles of Tippecanoe and of New Orleans. Nathaniel Hale Pryor did indeed lead a very full, albeit unappreciated and unrecompensed life.

There is just no evidence, but his wife is our ancestor.
I get matches to an Ann Gilmore as wife of John McCampbell, BUT the proof of Ann Gilmore is this. The marriage occurred in 1797. This John McCampbell would have been 109 years old.
Name Ann Buchanan Date 4 Oct 1797 Spouse Name John McCampbell Notes This marriage record was originally published in "Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia, 1745-1800. Sarah McCampbell
F, #4046
There are several McCampbell genealogies and all of them have Hannah and Sarah marring Alexander Telford and a Cunningham. Birth dates are not known and often the guesses are way too late for Sarah or Hannah to be the mother of Alexander's children, but I'm going forward assuming they are not wrong about the spouses and it is the birth dates that are wrong. I'm using the book with the most detail about the family.
It is also possible that the first two children had a different mother, and the first child of Sarah/Hannah was William, born 1750.
McCampbell, Nellie. Samuel Shannon McCampbell [and] Sarah Prudence Smith McCampbell, ancestors and descendants (1965). Knoxville, TN. Downloaded from familysearch 5/21/2024.
It includes an old letter, but this family was descended from James so the direct evidence is not for Sarah or Hannah.

William Cunningham
M, #4048, b. about 1725, d. 1780
This William is tied to a daughter Rebecca who married James Daugherty (see 1771 land sale), but the James Cunningham who bought land from him who was a son of Thomas Cunningham and Dorcas Cunningham seems unlikely. I think this is a different William Cunningham! It seems unlikely that a Cunningham from the latter family would appear in Rockbridge County, Virginia...
Hugh B. Cunningham has a son William born 1736, which seems too late for the father of Rebecca... That is the only relevant William in "Descendants of ALEXANDER CUNNINGHAM".
Family: Phoebe (b. about 1729)
Birth | about 17251 | |
Death | 1780 | In Charlotte County, Virginia, United States. James Daugherty is said to have been executor of the estate in 1780.2 |
Misc | | Familysearch is ridiculous. BOGUS! Familysearch has her parents as William Cunningham (1699-1780) Margaret Elizabeth Campbell (1704-1765) and 8 children listed, but all but Rebecca are born in New York! They don't have any parents listed for either of these people! |
Property | 1771 | Sold property to son in law James Daugherty in 1771.2 |
Misc | 1775 | Sold land to James Cunningham (abt. 1720 - 1780.) This may not be connected to THIS William Cunningham. See person notes.
Related to James Cunningham (1720-1780) 1775 will:
At this date he seems to have living on the property which he subsequently bought from his cousin Matthew Cunningham. By 1776 he had a total of 1,000 acres within Charlotte County, purchased as follows: from Robert Caldwell 254 acres on Cub Creek 7 April 1761 (7 Lunenburg Deeds 37); from David Caldwelll, 100 acres on Cub Creek 4 August 1761 (6 Lunenburg Deeds 427), from Matthew Cunningham presumably 254 acres on Cub Creek 14 June 1764 (8 Lunenburg Deeds 124); from William Cunningham 274 acres on Turnip Creek 2 March 1772 (8 Lunenburg Deeds 124) and from Samuel Boyd 118 acres on Turnip Creek (3 Charlotte Deeds 53). |
