Benjamin Van Cleef
M, #2485, b. December 1712, d. 3 July 1774
Benjamin went into a coastal shipping business with his brother Aaron Van Cleave. Benjamin handled the business end while Aaron captained their ship. From documentation we know that they shipped goods between, at least, Boston, Massachusetts to Newport, Rhode Island, and down to Perth Amboy, New Jersey and back again. Skepticism over one of their shipments involved a security debt, which they were forced to pay, causing the selling of their business.
Benjamin first used the anglicized spelling of Van Cleaf before he changed to writing it in the Germanic Van Cleve. His descendants are found using both spellings.

Mary Shepherd
F, #2491, d. 14 September 1781
In the fall of 1781 the settlers at Squire Boone's Station were warned of the approach of another band of Indians on the warpath. The whites immediately started for the protection of the stronger fort at Louisville, but on Sept. 14 they were attacked at Long Run Creek and 40 or 50 men, women and children were massacred. (Draper Mss. 19 C 120-154). Among the casualties were John Van Cleave's wife, Mary, and twin daughters. John afterward married Mrs. Rachel Demaree Ryker, whose husband was killed at the same time as John's wife. As time went on, Rachel's son, Gerardus Ryker Jr., married Leah Van Cleave, one of John's older daughters by his first wife.

Scott has no matches |
Misc | | Parents - BIG problems. She seems to have been born too early for Mary King to have been her mother. And a gap before the other children. Unless our birth date is wrong which is entirely possible since there is no evidence at all. BUT the wife of Barney is named in a will and was born in 1700 which is too late for our Elizabeth.
The will is deadly for the parents of our Elizabeth Stevenson to be the daughter of Edward and Mary King (despite DNA)because it does not mention the Chapman children:"16 JAN 1717 Mary Stevenson, widow of Baltimore County for the natural love and affection I have unto my loving daughter Elizabeth Barney have granted a parcel of land called Betty’s Inheritance being part of a tract of land called Morgan’s Delight lying on the north side of Patapsco River on a ridge called Little Britain containing 150 acres. At the end of this deed is a statement regarding the petition of William Barney that he is the son & heir of Elizabeth Barney late of the said county, deceased, and that Morgan Morray, late of Balt. Co. conveyed a 150 acre tract called Morgan’s Delight to Mary Stevenson and that by deed of gift Mary Stevenson executed the sale before two two justices of the peace and from the ignorance of the grantee that said deeds were never recorded. The General Assembly accepted this as true and gave approval to record the deeds and confirm the sale on 1 SEP 1747. [4]" https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Stevenson-2224
Also, from Baltimore County Families, Robert and Elizabeth sold a property in 1720. And Robert Chapman died in 1749.
There must have been a first wife. Edward Stevenson was 46 when he had Richard King Stevenson. Our Elizabeth seems to have been born about 1683 when her father would have been 25, whereas our DNA match, Richard King was born in 1704.
Also she may have had a second husband (William Barney) and is said to have died before 1719. Also, did she divorce Robert Chapman or is his death date incorrect? https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Stevenson-2224 |
