Misc | Parents and Family. These are notes on Robert Chapman's familysearch page: Note 1: Chapman Family of Maryland Research Notes by Steve Mecham 1707- Estimated year of birth of Robert Chapman Jr.- Taken from Balitmore Families 1659-1759, page 104 which states: “[he] gave age as 68 on 9 Dec. 1776.” His parents were Robert Chapman Sr. and his wife Elizabeth. Inhabitants of Baltimore, Maryland, 1763-1774, written by Henry C. Peden, Heritiage Books, 2009, page seven lists as inhabitants : Chapman, Robert Sr.; Chapman, Robert Jr. This distinguishes that there was a Robert Sr. and Robert Jr. residing in Baltimore at the same time. Baltimore Families, 1659-1749, establishes the relationship between Robert Sr. and Robert Jr. when on page 104, the following statement is made “[Robert Chapman Jr.] was m. [married] to Margaret (?) by Dec. 1749 when as ‘wheelwright, son and heir of Robert Chapman, dec’ [deceased]…..” Baltimore Families 1659-1759, page 104, states under Robert Chapman Sr., “admin. Bond posted 9 Nov. 1749 by Robert Chapman [Jr.] with William Macclan and Nathaniel Smith; est. inv. 7 Feb. 1749/50 filed by Robert Chapman and signed by Joseph Arnold and John Chapman as kin. This indicates that Robert Chapman Sr. died by 1749 and Robert Chapman Jr. was his executor. Other land records of Robert Chapman Sr. list his wife as Elizabeth as early as 1720 [see Baltimore Families, 1659-1759, page 103-104- it reads: Robert Chapman m. Elizabeth (?); pat. 100 a. [acres]of Betty’s Adventure in 1710; he and w. [wife] Elizabeth sold this to John Hall in 1720]. It would be assumed that Elizabeth, wife of Robert Chapman Sr., then would be the mother of Robert Chapman Jr. 1736, November 30- Robert Chapman marries Elizabeth Tayler- Taken from Maryland Marriages, 1634-1777, page 32. I would assume that this would be Robert Chapman Jr.s first wife, but there is no absolute proof of relationship. 1747- Robert Chapman Jr. had taken a second wife, Margaret ______. This information is taken from the Journal of James Chapman, son of John Chapman. The journal reads, “John Chapman, son of Robert and Margaret Chapman was born December 1, 1747. Baltimore Families, 1659-1749, page 104 states that “[Robert Chapman Jr.] was m. [married] to Margaret (?) by Dec. 1749 when as ‘wheelwright, son and heir of Robert Chapman, dec’ with w. [wife] Margaret sold Yate’s Forbearance to Daniel Dulany.” This statement simple means that Robert Chapman Jr. and Margaret were man and wife at the time of sale of this land to Daniel Forbearance in Dec. 1749. The James Chapman Journal implies that they were married prior to John Chapman’s birth on Dec. 1, 1747. Children of Robert Chapman Jr.: ROBERT CHAPMAN, d.1804- Taken from Baltimore Families 1659-1759, page 104. No other information is given. LUKE CHAPMAN, s. of Robert Jr., prob. Died by 1790. Married 1754, Sophia, widow of Charles Conaway and daughter of John and Mary Wooden. Taken from Baltimore Families 1659-1759, page 104. I make the assumption that he was the son of Robert Chapman Jr. and his first wife, Elizabeth Taylar as he marries in 1754, hence he would have been born earlier that 1747, the birth of John Chapman, son of Robert Chapman Jr. and Margaret. Luke Chapman, born abt. 1734 in Delaware Hundred, Baltimore, Maryland. Died 21 Jan 1816, Beaver City, Beaver, PA. Married Sophia Wooden, daughter of John and Mary Wooden, by 1769. Information taken from Taken from Chapman-Zinter Family Tree in Ancestry.com. NATHAN CHAPMAN, s. of Robert Jr., b. c. 1740, died in 1807, married Rebecca Griffith in 1760. In 1759 he bought 50 acres of Buck Forest from Robert and Margaret Chapman. This information is taken from Baltimore Families, 1659-1759, page 104. They make the assumption that Nathan is Robert Chapman’s son based on this land purchase. I make the assumption that he was probably the son of Robert Chapman Jr. and his first wife, Elizabeth Taylor, due to the estimated birth year of 1740. There is no absolute proof of this assumption though. DANIEL CHAPMAN, d. 1753. This information is taken from Baltimore Families, 1659-1759, page 104. JAMES CHAPMAN, d. 1772. This information is taken from Baltimore Families, 1659-1759, page 104. HELEN CHAPMAN, b. 18 June 1763, died 1823, married Thomas Gorsuch. This information is taken from Baltimore Families, 1659-1759, page 104. I make the assertion that she was the daughter of Robert Chapman Jr. and his second wife Margaret. I base this on the fact that the Chapman Journal states that John Chapman, born Dec. 1, 1747 was the son of Robert and Margaret Chapman. There is a head stone found in the Mt Pleasant United Methodist Church Cemetery in Gamber, Carroll Co., MD which reads, “ In Memory of Hellen, wife of Thomas Gorsuch who departed this life, February 10, 1823, aged 69 years, 7 months and 22 days.” Her correct birthdate from this headstone would be 19 June 1753. JOSHUA CHAPMAN, b. 20 Jan. 1755, St. Thomas Parish, Baltimore, Maryland, probable son of Robert and Margaret Chapman. Taken from Chapman-Zinter Family Tree in Ancestry.com. Last Changed: 4 February 2023 Note 2: Do not confuse Robert Chapman Sr of Maryland with Robert Chapman (1675-1760) of Connecticut. 1707- Estimated year of birth of Robert Chapman Jr.- Taken from Balitmore Families 1659-1759, page 104 which states: “[he] gave age as 68 on 9 Dec. In addition, this shows that Robert Chapman Sr was living in Baltimore, Maryland, at the same time as the man Robert Chapman (1675-1760) lived in Saybrook and Hartford, Connecticut. Last Changed: 1 April 2023 Note 3: The Robert Chapmans of Baltimore County, MD Completely agree with Christine's comments and those of Wes Clarke regarding the research notes of Steve Meacham. The father of Robert Chapman b. 1707 in Baltimore Co., MD is, with high probability, Robert Chapman b. ~1670 d. 1749 Baltimore Co., MD. Robert d. in November 1749 intestate and his sons John and Robert are show on letters of administration that same year in Baltimore Co. There are no records indicating that Edward of East Haddam ever left Connecticut. Also, the child of Edward preceding Robert, Deborah, also indicated as being born 1707 was born in East Haddam and the child directly after Robert, Francis b. 1712, was also born in East Haddam, CT. It is more probable that Robert b. 1707 was the son of Robert Chapman b. ~1670 - d. 1749 in Baltimore Co., MD. Robert b. ~1670 first appears on tax roles in 1704 in the Elk Ridge Hundred and is mentioned in that location in Robert Barnes compiled book "Baltimore County Families 1659 - 1759" with sources and Barnes' 1967 compilation "The Chapmans of Baltimore County". Robert Chapman b. 1707 had a son also named Robert b. 1731/32 d. 1771. Robert b. 1731/32 married Urath Ragan, daughter of Daniel Ragan. I differ from the notes, in that, the "Robert, Jr." (b. 1731/32) mentioned as d. 1771 was probably the son of Robert b. 1707 rather than Robert, Jr. son of Robert, Sr. d. 1749. Robert b. 1707 took the Oath Of Allegiance in 1778 with his sons John and Joshua in the "rooms of the Honorable Peter Shepard" as shown in the meeting minutes of the Maryland Committee of Safety and , therefore, was not deceased in 1771. The Robert Chapman that d. 1804, married Catherine Yohn, was the son of Nathan Chapman and Rebecca Griffith. Y DNA tests from direct male descendants of five sons of Robert b. 1707 have confirmed a very high probability of relatedness and excluded relatedness to the descendants of Edward of East Haddam.
