Death | about 1811 | No real evidence of his death. BUT he was named executor of his father's will in 1807. If his wife Jane van Cleave married Elias Thomas in Feb 1806, he died before that and his supposed son Nathan was somebody else's child. Ralph Van Cleave's findagrave says he was killed ca 1811 in a hunting accident. But was that another Nathan Chapman? That story is also in the small collection of materials The Van Cleave Family.4 |
Misc | Problem with genealogy? Too many Nathans? Census records put Nathan Chapman in Maryland his whole life, yet he married in Kentucky and his children were born in Kentucky. Also did a Nathan Chapman die in Indiana? Their son John lived in Indiana. But did Jane marry Elias Thomas in 1806 in Kentucky? And move to Indiana?
Misc | Another child? Who is Hannah Chapman who married a Kinney and then a Miller. I do not see much evidence on ancestry after a quick look... Hannah Chapman was born circa 1800 at Henry County, Kentucky. She was the daughter of Nathan Chapman and Jane Van Cleave. Hannah married George Kinney, son of Richard Kinney and Susannah Beard, on 25-Feb-1821 at Scottsburg, Scott County, Indiana. Hannah married Robert Miller on 7-Sep-1835 at Jefferson County, Indiana. Hannah Chapman died after 1860 at Jefferson County, Indiana. Hannah was buried at Bear Creek Cemetery, Jefferson County, Indiana. Hannah Chapman 1821 married in Scott Co., Ind. 1826 listed in land sale withhusband George Kinney in Scott Co., Ind. 1835 Sept 3, married Robert Miller, Jefferson Co., Ind. She and her father (both widowed) lived some 8 miles from Miller. Her father's name was Chapman. They being of the John Wesley Methodist order and Mr. Miller's house was the place of preaching, Mr. Chapman and Mrs. Kinney were frequently at the service of worship. He was one of the pioneersof Clark County and raised a large family. Mr. Chapman and his boys helped dig the canal around the falls of the Ohio River at New Albany, (Floyd Co., Ind.). Mrs. Kinney's sister had died a few years before and left a little boy babyby the name of Saunder. His father had a large family and he gave Mrs. Kinneythe baby. When Miller married Mrs. Kinney, her father and the baby also joined his household. Miller adopted the boy for his own. Mr. Chapman had another daughter that lived a few miles from Millers that he spent part of his time with, as well as with some of his other children. He died at Millers in 1842 or 1843. He was the first and last to be buried at the Old Bethel Church on Bear Creek on Granddaddy Wilson's farm. (Moses Wilson's father.) His grave is marked with 2 cedar trees. Mr. Miller's family now began to increase by his last wife. The first was a pair of twin boys, and as he did with the other boys, he gave them scripture names, calling them Caleb and Joshua, Caleb died in infancy. Joshua is still living past the alloted time of three score and ten years. 1837 August, The next child was also a boy, named for his father, Robert. 1840 about this time the next child, a girl, was born, named Mary Ann, I think for his first wife. 1840 Census Jefferson Co., Ind. pg-385 Graham twp. Mr. Miller being now a cripple from the cut of an axe, and being to old to follow the plow very good, built a house on another part of the farm for his youngest boy (Jonathan) andrented most of all the cleared land to him. 1844 August 29, Jonathan Miller married in Jefferson Co., Ind. Things went very well for two or three years, but Jonathan, being of an unsettled disposition moved away just as spring beganto open, and through his persuasion, he got the adopted boy to come and live with him by telling him of a great many things that sounded good to a boy of 14. Mr. Miller was left with 2 little boys and a farm. Marriage | 28 February 1806 | In Shelby County, Kentucky, United States. The problem with this marriage is Nathan Chapman was named in his father's will in 1807, before this marriage! It seems the Indiana people call her Jane Chapman and most don't know her parents, not being able to find a Jane Chapman. Others have her father as a William Chapman, that I can find no ancestry for. Her presumed daughter Rhoda's findagrave says: Rhoda Thomas married William Smiley Miller on 03 Nov 1831 in Jefferson County, IN. Rhoda was the daughter of Elias Thomas (b.17 Oct 1783 VA, USA d.2 Aug 1840 Jennings, IN) & her mother was Jane Chapman.5 |
Death | after 1850 | Said to have married Elias Thomas and was living with daughter Rhoda Thomas in 1850. But another tree has her killed by Indians 14 May 1836. No evidence. https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/111676261/person/412205397700/facts Note, the Hardin Kentucky death date and location is the Jane Van Cleave who married Noble Daugherty.6 |
Misc | Parents: I think Ralph Van Cleave and Lydia Combs. "Ralph Van Cleave was born about 1747 in New Jersey. He married Lydia Combs & moved to Ky. in 1775. His children included: Betsey (killed by Indians on 23 May 1790), Joseph, Jesse, Benjamin (married Nellie Foye; in 1813 at the Battle of the River Raisin he disappeared), Jane (married Nathan Chapman 1796) & Mary (never married)" The Van Cleave Story The trouble is DNA does not "like" Ralph Van Cleave as her father or my ancestor, but prefers William Van Cleave (1743-1786). It could be because very few people know who this Jane is.4,1
Misc | DNA Matches. 2024. I have ZERO with Jane Van Cleave. 52 with Nathan Chapman. That may be because no one knows who Jane is! Also, the other children match only Nathan. Whoops! Scott now ALSO has Zero with Jane Van Cleave. Looking at the children of Nathan and Jane, they match Nathan and the trees do show A Jane, but the Janes are so messed up that this is not going to work out with their new algorithm. BUT Scott when he has the small tree comes up with 45 matches with Jane Van Cleave, but maybe only as the wife of William Chapman... The trees seem to agree on William Van Cleave being her father. And under Jane Van Cleave and the Chapman children they throw in two Daughterty children. BUT we are related to Daughertys! Some of those DNA matches are with Chapman and Weir as common ancestor, but not all. Need to work on this when ancestry is working better. --------------- Scott has 53 DNA matches with children of Jane Van Cleave. 48 with William Chapman.

Immigration | 27 June 1843 | New York. The immigration record was transcribed Krenner instead of Brenner. The Baltimore that he came on was a bark (or barque). Wikipedia: A barque, barc, or bark is a type of sailing vessel with three or more masts having the fore- and mainmasts rigged square and only the mizzen (the aftmost mast) rigged fore and aft. Sometimes, the mizzen is only partly fore-and-aft rigged, bearing a square-rigged sail above. This was not the SS Baltimore which was launched in 1867. It had 2 masts and was rigged for sailing.4,5 |
