James Crumley

M, #2077, b. about 1712, d. before 9 August 1764
James was a successful 'cordwainer' or importer of Spanish leather goods and owned at least two plantations. His home plantation was on "Apple Pie Ridge" in what is now Berkeley County, WV.

Apple Pie Ridge is where my Quaker ancestors, James Crumley and his wife, Catherine, lived. The original home is now preserved as a historic property.

MiscSlaveowner. James estate inventory, given that he as a Quaker, is quite interesting, and unexpected. He had 4 slaves who could have been a family, and he had 15 gallons of liquor and a still. Given the Quaker stance on slavery – and that many Quakers bought slaves with the sole intention of freeing them – he may have been in conflict with the Quaker church over this. I have seen commentaries that he was reprimanded by the church for this practice, but there are no records supporting this in the Hopewell records.

We know that James’ slaves were not freed, during or after his life, because in 1768, James’ son John Crumley releases his future right in James’ estate after his mother, Katherine, dies, including “all rights to the negroes.”

Given the amount of liquor James had, it’s unlikely that this was only for personal use. Fifteen gallons, along with the still, is suggestive that he was distilling alcohol for sale3

MiscMaiden name. I'm leaning toward Bowen. DNA people seem to think GIlkey, but not sure their DNA determined that or they think for other reasons.

Gilkey is family story. Bowen is also in dispute. Read the reference.

Bowen was Quaker, Gilkey was not. (although I have seen some reference that Gilkey was Quaker)

There is also the possibility that he married two Catherines... both of these women.5,6,3,7,8

After the war was over he moved to Madison Co with his two brothers William and Joshua. They settled near Boonesborough.

In 1784 Henry was at Constitution Square in Danville Kentucky for a petition of statehood from Virginia. Henry operated the ferry near College Hill on the Kentucky River that crossed into Clark County. He also owned a farm in Madison Co and was a neighbor to Jabez Tipton and Gen Green Clay. MiscMore About Henry. Henry Noland was born in Maryland and lived in Berkeley County, Virginia. He was married to Nancy White and we find them in the census records of Bedford County, Pennsylvania. They finally migrated to Madison County, Kentucky, before the year 1791. Henry settled near the Kentucky River and Red River Pike. This place was beyond the Cane Springs Primitive Baptist Church, which Henry and his family helped to build and establish. The church was established in 1803. The church had a Noland as one of its officers until 1936, when death claimed a great grandson of Henry Noland, also named Henry. He was serving in the position of clerk when he died.

Henry Noland, the ancestor first talked about above died suddenly in the year 1807. He is buried on the land which he settled as a pioneer of Kentucky. Henry served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War. He saw service on the Virginia Frontier. His wife Nancy White Noland died in 1837.

Henry Noland's grave is located on a point of land not to far from the Kentucky River. John White Noland had also lived there. The cemetery had an iron fence around it and one old grave that was marked with two rocks and three graves that had the name of Jones on them. The cemetery is located on a beautiful place. The land was owned by Skinner Heirs and no one lived there for years.

Henry Noland had a ferry that he operated. It was known as "Noland's Ferry". It crossed the Kentucky River from Madison County into Clark County, Kentucky. The road is still there that leads into the Kentucky River.

These Nolands were listed as members of the Cane Springs Primitive Baptist Church at College Hill, Kentucky in Madison County

In the passenger lists housed in the Maryland Hall of Colonial Records on the St. Johns campus in Annapolis, colony of Maryland, is a list of 14 settlers, 'all of British or Irish descent -- brought in ye Shippe Michaut's (?) Conerd by Carles CARLY Commander, proved before me the said Capt CARLIS [sic] Anno [illegible] 1680', including a Peter TUTTLE.

MiscParents - Unknown. She is often said to be a Thomas. studying thomas for the Mary Thomas that her son married, I see that Elizabeth could be the child of
John Phillip Thomas (1630-1702) GMPS-Q3H
Sarah Harrison (1635-1687) G6BZ-BSC
FS seems to have no sources for any of this...

Philip Thomas' will (~1702) does not name a daughter Elizabeth but there are plenty of trees with an Elizabeth Tuttle in them. Not being named does not mean she was not their daughter! Elizabeth would have been young...
This shows a child Elizabeth marrying first a Coale and second Edward Talbot.

But I can't go back and find more Thomas' that might include the Mary that Peter Tuttle Jr married. Plus what about the DNA matches... with the Sarah who married Richardson...
