Winston Robert Klamm

M, #3, b. 7 January 1918, d. 7 October 1994
Winston Klamm was born January 7, 1918 in Ottawa, Kansas, where his father operated a garage. By 1918 his father was operating a garage in Paola, Kansas, until at least 1925. About 1927 they were in Texas and in Kansas City by the 1930 census. By 1935 the family was living in Platte County.

He married Ruby Mae Anderson 19 October 1937. They probably met at St. Matthews Church which they were both attending. In 1939 he was working as a clerk in Townley Metal and Hardware in Kansas City. Judy was born March 7, 1941. Meanwhile, Phillip and Lizzie Klamm gave each of the children some land on which to build a house which Phillip helped them build. Ruby had attended beauty school and had a beauty shop in the home. That soon became very useful because World War II was soon to start.

From January 5, 1944 through 15 January 1946 Winston served in the Navy. He trained as a diesel mechanic and served on a minesweeper in the Pacific. He served on the USS Prime minesweeper (AM-279) from September 1944 through late December 1945, after which he was returned to the United States to be discharged. He told us that he had walked around in Nagasaki soon after the atomic bomb was dropped. A photographer who photographed Nagasaki at that time described it as “hell on earth”. Serving on a minesweeper is a very dangerous job, and in fact the minesweeper that he was scheduled to return him to Norfolk, Virginia, on was destroyed by a mine just before he was scheduled to board it.

He lived his entire life after 1935 in Platte County. First in several houses on the lots provided by and purchased from his father then nearby on property purchased from the family.

Although he was trained as a diesel mechanic, he could not get a job as a diesel mechanic after the war, so he returned to working at wholesale hardware companies in Kansas City. First in the warehouse and finally as director of purchasing of the industrial hardware division of Richards and Conover. He retired in 1972 at the age of 54.

The family was members of St. Matthews Evangelical and Reformed Church for many years but in later years joined the Park Hill Christian Church. St. Matthews is the family church of his parents and grandparents and he and Ruby are buried in a cemetery at that church.

Winston was an avid trout fisherman and for many years had a property in the Ozarks near Montauk State Park, where his son Kenneth also lived for a while. He also loved the outdoors and often went hiking in Colorado with his son and daughter. For a while he and his daughter would climb a 14er (a mountain over 14,000 feet) in Colorado every fall. In retirement he took up creating stained glass pieces as a hobby and he and Ruby had a little store for a while near Montauk State Park.

WInston died Oct 7, 1994, at Trinity Luthern Hospital in Kansas City after a heart attack. He died 2 years and 5 days after the death of his beloved wife Ruby.

John Philip Klamm

M, #5, b. 17 December 1880, d. 14 October 1958
John Philip Klamm was born 17 December, 1880 at his parents' farm in Clay County, Missouri. In 1900 he was living with his parents and the census reported he was a "farm laborer". On August 13, 1902, he married Elizabeth Susanna Brenner.

He and "Lizzie" (as she was always called) lived various places throughout their lives and it was a bit difficult to figure out, so here's what I have found out. They were still in Clay County in May 1903 when their first child, Herman, was born. His sons Oliver and Ralph were born in 1906 and 1908 in Bonner Springs, Kansas. According to a postcard of the Bonner Springs fire in November 1908, Philip and a brother had a harness shop in Bonner Springs. Since most of the downtown was destroyed, they probably moved back to Clay County at that time.

In the 1910 census he is farming in Clay County on rented property next to the property of his father. The family is still in Clay County in 1912 and 1915 when Frances and Della are born. But in 1918 Winston is born in Ottawa, Kansas. Family history is that they lost their farm in Clay County.

From about 1918 to 1925 they are in Paola, Kansas, where Philip is operating a auto garage and battery station (which may or may not be the same thing).

They probably stayed in Paola through 1925, but we know they went to Texas. Ralph graduated high school in Weslaco, Texas in 1927, so they were there then. Lizzie loved to tell stories about Texas, which she hated. You can imagine the trip from Paola, Kansas, to the Rio Grande Valley of Texas in a 1920s open touring car with 6 children, two adults, and everything you could bring with you! Winston told the story that he sat behind his father and his father chewed (and spat)!

In the 1930 census, Philip is a paperhanger in Kansas City. By 1935 they are back in Platte County, Missouri, living on land inherited by Lizzie. On the acres around their house they maintained a small farm with chickens and a huge vegetable garden (and Lizzie's huge flower garden). At some point they built a smaller house on the property in which to live.

Philip and Lizzie sold each of their children a lot on which to build a house. The price was $1 and he helped them build houses if they chose to build one. They are in a row on Klamm Road in Riverside. The grandchildren Ruby, Carol, Marjorie, Judy and Kenny were raised there.

In later years they moved to the house that belonged to Ralph in order to be closer to some of the children. After Lizzie died in 1956, Philip went to live with his son Winston, where he died in 1958.

Elizabeth Susanna Brenner

F, #6, b. 12 July 1881, d. 28 November 1956
Elizabeth Susanna Brenner (called "Lizzie") was born 12 July, 1881, the fourth child of John Peter Brenner and Louisa Mary Truskey. They lived on a farm in Platte County (now Riverside). She later inherited some of this land which she and her family lived on after about 1935.

Here is a snippet from "The Brenner Family - 1843 - 1990" compiled by Carol Chamberlin Brenner.
"Mar. 8, 1901--The Apollo Reading Club met at thehome of Miss Lizzie Brenner. The evening was spent as follows. Life of Whittier by G. Brenner. Ben Tucker by W. Hansen. Barbara Fuctchie by Emma Hansen. The Barefooted Boy by Anna Hansen. Maud Muller by Lizzie Brenner. Life by Mattie Brenner. Snow Bound by Emma Brenner. Recitatian's by Minnie and Ella Hansen. A fish story by Johnnie Brenner. Ten members and four visitors were present, the club decided to give a play the 8th of March."

Lizzie married John Philip Klamm on 13 August, 1902, likely in St. Matthews Evangelical and Reformed Church.

Somehow they lost the farm he inherited from his father (stories vary) so they had a rather difficult life, especially during the Depression. When her father died they moved to property that she inherited.

Lizzie was an avid gardener. She had a huge flower garden at her home in Riverside and was a member of the Brenner Ridge Garden Club. One of her great sadnesses when she got old was that she was no longer able to take care of her flowers.

Having a huge vegetable garden as well, canning and preserving were always big projects. She made excellent pickles, which were always on the table before a meal. Coffee cake (yeast dough) was another favorite.

Her grandson Kenneth Klamm tells this story: He remembers her killing a rooster by swinging him around by the head till the head comes off and then putting him under a wash tub till he stops flopping. Then she took him into the kitchen and clean him for cooking. She pulled the windpipe out and blew on it to show him how he crowed! He also remembers rosecomb roosters.

She was also a great story teller. When children would stay overnight at her house, they always got a bit of storytelling, mostly stories of her life, often taking place in Texas, which she hated.

They were always available to help their children, and gave each of them property on which to build a house and helped them build them.
