John Ratliff
M, #77, b. about 1805, d. 1847
Parents
Birth | about 1805 | I calculate he has to have been born between 1801 and 1810 from the 1840 census.
All of his parents' children are usually given to John Ratliff b1799 in Russell County, Virginia and died in Kentucky. That John Ratliff married Sarah Childress. That John Ratliff is said to have died in Pike Co., Kentucky.
We know our John died in Missouri and his children were put under guardianship of the Bowlin famiy.1 |
Death | 1847 | In Platte County, Missouri, United States of America.2,3,4 |
Misc | | Father: John Ratliff and Charlotte White. DNA seems to confirm John Ratliff and Charlotte White.
He called himself John Jr in the 1840 US Census.
A person named Rueben is usually put as a child of John born about 1805. However, this Rueben was born in North Carolina and curiously died in Jackson County, Missouri. There is no evidence for this person or his life in most trees. Familysearch has a marriage to Sarah Johnson in 1837 in Tazewell, VA. and civil war pension form from Sarah re Reuben dated 1871 related to Kentucky. No children ever listed. Usually not a wife either.
ThruLines® for William Ruben Ratclyffe ThruLines® uses Ancestry® trees to suggest that you may be related to 19 DNA matches through William Ruben This huge number of matches means I am related to the siblings of our John Ratiff b1805 since most of the matches are from his siblings.
The children of John Ratliff from "Some descendants of John Ratliff & Charlotte White, 1765-1997" does not list a child named John. See.1 |
Misc | | DNA Match. Two George W descendants and one of James M |
Misc | | Wife: Mary Anne Thorn? Just read it somewhere... no evidence provided and I can find no such person that would fit but there were Thorn family members in Virginia and women are often forgotten especially if they move away and die young. Could check census for how close they might have lived to Ratliffs. |
Residence | 1840 | In Pike, Kentucky, United States. This is a possible fit for the John Ratliff family in 1840. Number of children and ages fit or almost fit.
According to the 1840 census, he had been married at least 10 years (1 male child between 10 and 14 years old). So they were married by 1830.
He names himself John Ratliff Jr1 |
Probate | 8 December 1847 | In Platte County, Missouri, United States.5 |
Probate | 4 September 1850 | In Platte County, Missouri, United States.6 |

Death | 20 October 1933 | At age 83 in Lathrop, Clinton, Missouri, United States. Obituary for Emma Ann Kimsey
Emma Ann Kimsey, daughter of Samuel and Martha Kimsey, was born April 24, 1850, at Dallas, Tex., and passed away at her home near Holt, Mo., Oct 20, 1933, having reached the age of 83 years, 4 months, and 26 days.
She came with her parents to Platte county, Missouri when six years old, and lived there most of her life. Her parents died when she was very young, and she took up the responsibility of caring for the younger children.
She was married on May 11, 1878, to James William Walters (usually called Polk Walters) also of Platte county. To this union were born three boys and eight girls. One boy, Paul, died in infancy, and one girl, Mrs. Lena baber, died as a young woman.
She is survived by one brother, John Kimsey, who has made his home with her in recent years, and by nine children: Dessie Walters of the home, Mrs. Grace Sidener of Converse, Mrs. Ola Anderson of Plattsburg, Mrs. Alice Greenlee of Lawson, Mrs. Minnie Dodder of Portland, Oreg., Amos Walters of Holt, Mrs. Patsy Brown of Cameron, Joseph Walters of the home, and Mrs. Miranda Attebury of Plattsburg. She is also survived by forty grandchildren, and forty-seven great grand children, and a host of other relatives and friends. Her husband died in 1887 and she moved to Clinton county with her children in 1889, where she lived the remainder of her life.
At the death of her daughter many years ago, the two younger children, Florence and Russell Baber, were taken into her home and reared to young womanhood and young manhood, and given the tender loving care of her own children.
She was a noble, Christian woman, having been converted in early life. Her church membership most of her life was with the Little Platte baptist church near Platte City, where it remained until the time of her death. She was a loyal, steadfast Christian, bearing her suffering without complaint to the end.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon in Little Platte church, conducted by Rev. Estes of Smithville, and burial was in the Baber family cemetery in Platte county.1,3 |
