Birth25 September 1805In Pennsylvania, British America. or Virginia. 1850 census says he was born in Pennsylvania but I'm thinking he thought where his father was born? Or he didn't answer the census himself, or? The rest say Virginia.

This is not good news for his being the son of John Archibald, since John Archibald was in Kentucky by 1800.

On the other hand, there are those DNA matches with John Archibald... Possibly because of other confused trees...

George Washington Ratliff

M, #44, b. about 1831, d. 9 November 1889
His name is George Washington Ratliff. He was born about 1831 in Kentucky. We hear of him in 1847 when guardianship of him and his siblings is given to William Bowlin. His father John has died and there is no sign of his mother nor do we know his mother's name.

Somewhere around 1851 he marries Nancy McGee, who lived next door to him when he lived with the Bowlins. They have 5 known children, including our ancestor Marthenia "Martha" Ratliff who marries Archibald Anderson.

They lived in Platte County all their lives.

SonJohn D. Ratliff (b. March 1868)
Birthabout 1831In Kentucky, United States. What is his full name? It is George Washington Ratliff.

He is Geo (for George) in the 1860 census. It was very common to name children after presidents.
On the death certificate of his son Silas Ratliff his name is given as George Washington. It was filled out by his wife who did not know either the first or maiden name of his mother.

What is the origin of "Tom"? I noticed in one census that they could not fit Washington into the line, so "Washing" was on the line and "ton" above it. Could that "ton" have been taken for Tom? And then it was copied on so many trees as true?1,2
Marriageabout 1851Information from the Anderson Bible says Martha (Ratliff) Anderson's father was Washington Ratliff and Lucrecia BUT Lucrecia was the wife of James Ratliff, brother of Washington . 1860 and 1870 census has Washington's wife as Nancy.

The missing Nancy. The reason for the interest is Nancy McGee lived next door to Washington in the 1850 Census. Washington was living with Elizabeth Bowlin (widow of William) and Nancy McGee was living next door with her mother Elizabeth McGee. Living next door and being appropriate ages often led to marriage in those days.

Elizabeth McGee was a daughter of Delaney Bowlin and Delaney Bowlin lived next door to Elizabeth McGee. Three households in a row: Delaney Bowlin, Elizabeth and David McGee, and (William and )Elizabeth Bowlin.

Three of the households on that page are Delaney Bowlin, his daughter Elizabeth and husband David McGee (with daughter Nancy McGee), and William Bowlin and William's wife Elizabeth (guardian of Washington Ratliff). (William Bowlin died in 1850 and the guardianship of John Ratliff's children given to his wife Elizabeth.)

Also Washington Ratliff served as a witness to the will of Delaney Bowlin, grandfather of Nancy McGee.

ALSO, their son Silas lived in 1880 with a family in which he was called "nephew" in the census. The wife was Aristeen (McGee) Lajoie, a sister of Nancy McGee.

The familysearch tree has Nancy McGee as his wife.

Some people believe she was Nancy Williams with parents John W Williams and Mary, but no relevant information on such a family. A child is given to this Nancy Williams and Washington, so it is possible he married a Nancy Williams but I can find nothing about that.3,4
Death9 November 1889In Missouri.

Military14 December 1863George Washington Ratliff possibly served in the Confederate Army on 14 December 1863 in Platte County, Missouri, United States of America. His birth date and place are not exactly the same, but one record calls him George W and he did live in Lee County in 1860. Not sure about this. He did live in Lee township in the 1860 census and one of the records calls him George W. Ratliff.

The age doesn't match what I have nor the birth place our Ratliff reported in census. The Civil War Draft Registration record records two Ratliffs who were farmers: Washington and Martin (Martin being 1 year older), both born in Tennessee. One might assume they are brothers.

Our Washington Ratliff was born in Kentucky and did not have a brother Martin. We are pretty sure of that because of records involving the death of John Ratliff and guardianship of his children.9,10,11,12

SonJames Taylor Ratliff (b. 29 January 1865, d. 8 August 1920)
SonJohn D. Ratliff (b. March 1868)
Birthabout 1836In Missouri. Sarah E Ratliff's 1880 US Census says she was born in Kentucky1,2,3,4

A child is given to this Nancy Williams and Washington, so it is possible he married a Nancy Williams but I can find nothing about that.5,6
