Immigration | . Story in WIkiTree... One of their sons, Richard, and his wife, Mary (Caterne) boarded the ship SUBMISSION on September 16, 1682, bound for Pennsylvania. On November 10, 1682, they arrived on the eastern shore of Chesapeake Bay instead of landing in Pennsylvania. It is thought that the Maryland colony paid the captain a bounty for each person delivered to their colony. The Ratliffs settled near Easton in what is now known as Talbot County, Maryland. | |
Immigration | 1682 | . Submission? I see a name that is probably Richard Radliff aged 21, 2 passengers. That may be how they get his birth date? or is it confirmation of his birth date. It is noted that on all documents signed by Richard Butt(1A) Richard Butt(1B), and Richard Butt(1) are signed by 'His Mark 'X'' (All of above from Charles D. (Maryland Provincial Wills, 14:37) On 29 July 1708 Richard Butt witnessed the will of Thomas Swearingen of Prince George's County (Maryland Provincial Wills 13:265)(Research) :Some notes that I found dated 19 Aug 1997: Written by E Melton. Good Morning Researchers of the Butt-Butts surname: While I am primarily searching for western US branches of my line, I will begin to put what I know about the beginnings of my line in this post in the hope that it will be of help to some of you. I have only family tradition to prove this first paragraph. Any primary source material will be welcomed. Our BUTT ancestory in America probably begins with the immigrant William Butt who came to Portsmouth, NH in 1648. He married Elizabeth___?___ and moved to Dutchess Co., NY and had a large family of which Richard was the oldest son. (Any documentation is welcome) RICHARD BUTT was born about 1675; died 28 April 1723, Prince George's Co., MD. He married Mary Medalf about 1700. She was born in 1660 and died after 1767 Prince George's Co., MD. On January 3, 1700. Robert Tyler sold to Richard Butt of Anne Arundel County, Md, 206.25 acres of land called 'Bachelor's Delight'. a part of Darnell's Grove for 69 lbs. sterling. (Recorded 25 Feb. 1700, Prince George'.s County Land records, Vol. A 1696-1702 page 149) On Jan 19, 1708 Richard Butt witnessed the will of Thomas Swearingen, Prince George's County. On 28 April 1715 the will of Richard Butt was proved by three witinesses; Jno. Banks, Jno. Child and Sam Swearingen. (Maryland Hall of Records Vol 14, p. 37). Item 3 of his will reads - 'I give and bequeath to my eldest son, Richard Butt, the half of my land which is about one hundred and three acres to him and his heirs forever lawfully begotten of his body or to be begotten. Fourthly, I give unto my son, Thomas Butt, the other half of my land........Fifthly, I give the rest of my goods and money and all my personl estate to be divided between the other four children - Dinah Butt, Mary Butt, Samuel Butt (my line) Nicholas Butt. 'Sixthly, my will and pleasure is that my dear and loving wife shall be whole executrix of my whole estate. Birth | about 1681 | In Prince George's Co., Maryland, British America. Maiden name not certain. Birth date unknown - I used something reasonable so something is there. I've seen Odell as her maiden name. Early Colonial Settlers calls her Mary Denton (unproven) with the suggestion that she is a sister of Vachel Denton (she named a child Vachel) Born c. 1696, probably in St. Mary's County, the son of Henry Denton (d. 1698) and Mary Denton Price. Married Anne Brice (1708-1765) on November 23, 1721; no surviving children. Vachel Denton was a merchant and attorney residing in Annapolis, Anne Arundel County, Maryland after May 1723. He was a justice of the peace in Anne Arundel County in 1717 and a clerk in the Secretary's Office and Provincial Court from 1718 to 1731; a register in the Chancery from 1718 to 1720; and a clerk in the Prerogative Office from 1721 to 1723. He was mayor of Annapolis from 1722 to 1726, a city alderman in 1724 and from 1728 to 1730, and mayor again from 1727 to 1745. He was a vestryman at St. Anne's Episcopal Church in Annapolis, 1724-27 and 1733-36. He was a member of the Lower House representing Annapolis from 1725 to 1727 and representing Anne Arundel County from 1734/35 to 1737, 1738 and 1739 to 1741. In 1727, Denton purchased all of Lot 90 in Annapolis at the corner of Prince George Street and Maryland Avenue from Joshua George. In 1728 Denton filed a request in the Mayor's Court to have Lot 90 put in his name. The house on the property was unfinished at the time he filed his request. Lot 90 is where Vachel Denton and his wife Anne lived until his death. In 1734 Sarah Crooke, Luke Raven and his wife Sarah, sold Lot 107 in Annapolis to Vachel Denton. Lot 107 sat adjacent to Lot 90 where the Denton's already had a home. In addition to the lots in Annapolis, Vachel Denton owned land in Baltimore and Cecil County, MD. Vachel Denton owned a sizeable slave labor force comprized of at least 21 enslaved people. Denton owned for a short period of time a young African named Job ben Solomon. Vachel Denton sold Job ben Solomon to "Mr. Tolsey" (probably Tolson) of Kent Island, Queen Anne's County, MD. Vachel Denton died in Annapolis in 1752 and his wife Anne was the executrix of his estate. Denton and his wife had no children therefore he willed personal items to his wife Anne Brice Denton and a neice Anne Hammond. An inventory was done on his property which listed the following slaves: Cooper, Jeffrey, Pompey, Troy, Bob, Ben, Harry, Jack Mendam, Jack, Adam, Charles, Will, Phill, Emanuel, Nan, Rachel, Joshua, Sue, Abigail, Bet, and Kate. https://msa.maryland.gov/megafile/msa/speccol/sc3500/sc3520/000300/000341/html/341bio.html1,2 |

Misc | Parents? Medcalf/Metcalf is her second husband's last name, not her maiden name. Early Colonial Settlers has Denton [unproven] but no evidence for the name at all. Family Search says maiden name is Preston In trees she is sometimes called Mary Swearingdon Odell but no one has guesses about her parents, so I'm leaving that out of her name. Some say she may be either Swearingen or O'dell. One of the witnesses of her husband Richard Butt's will was Samuell Swearingen. He does not have a sister named Mary listed on FS. Then Samuel, son of Richard and Mary Butt marries an Elizabeth Swearingen. If Mary was a Swearingen, they might be 1st cousins. She could belong to this family or child of a brother of Thomas. Apparently the name was once Van Swearingen. I don't see any Mary Swearingen on FS that early. But people often lost girls... Misc | Life Notes. By deed of gift dated 5 August 1741, Mary Metcalfe, widow, for love and affection to her children and grandchildren, gave household goods, cattle, etc, to (including) grandchildren Archibald and Lydia Butt. (Pr. Geo. Co. Land Records, Q: 379) October 26, 1767, Deed of Mary Metcalf, former widow of Richard Butt (1A), gave her grandsons, Richard I and Thomas II, the land called "Batchelor's Delight." A part of Darnells Grove, in accordance with the Will of Richard Butt(1A); Vol. BB, No. 2, pages 65-66, Maryland Hall of Records. Mary lived many years after his death and outlived both of these two sons. She deeded the land to Richard(1), son of Richard(1B) and Thomas II, son of Thomas I. Maryland State Archives (Probate Records, Colonial, Index) 1634-1777 Index 1, MSA S1393 Liber 1 folio 188 dated 1718 The indexes to probate records are divided into two categories, Prerogative Court records and County records. Two sets of probate records were maintained during the period preceding the implementation of the first Maryland State Constitution in 1777. Until then, probate business was conducted at the capital by the central agency which, for most of the Colonial period, was known as the Prerogative Court. The presiding officer of the Court was the Commissary General. A Deputy Commissary was appointed for each county. When any probate record was brought into the office of a Deputy Commissary, he recorded the instrument in his own county books. Periodically he would send the papers filed in his office to the Prerogative Court where the instruments were again recorded. The records of Anne Arundel County were not kept separate from the records of the Prerogative Court. Therefore, the records of the Prerogative Court (excepting Anne Arundel County probate records and the Proceedings of the Prerogative Court) were duplicated by the records of the Deputy Commissaries in the counties. Instruments may sometimes be found in one set of records which do not appear in the other. These omissions were caused by accident, custodial neglect, or other causes. The Prerogative Court was abolished in 1777. Since that time probate matters have been handled at the county level by the Register of Wills and Orphans' Court. No central probate recording office has functioned since the adoption of the first State Constitution. Prerogative Court Probate Records exist for the sixteen counties formed prior to 1777 in Maryland: Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Calvert, Caroline, Cecil, Charles, Dorchester, Frederick, Harford, Kent, Prince George's, Queen Anne's, St. Mary's, Somerset, Talbot, and Worcester. The other seven counties and Baltimore City were formed later from one or more of the above-listed counties. Probate Records from these latter jurisdictions are to be found in the records from that jurisdiction. The names indexed are those of decedents, except for Accounts, where there are listings for the executors and administrators (designated by an asterisk). There are volume indexes to all of these records kept in the stacks which may be consulted if a name does not appear in the card index, and most individual volumes also have indexes within them. Suspect Mary's maiden name may be Swearingen or O'dell. 1767 26 Oct Mary Medcalf of Prince George's County, MD, formerly relict of Richard the eldest, dec'd to grandsons Richard Butt and Thomas Butt.
