Alexander Hugh Tedford

M, #3190, b. 1680, d. about 1771
Alexander Telford, Sr. came to this country before 1760 and settled in Rockbridge County, Virginia. He brought the last part of his family over in 1760. He had seven children: Robert, David, Elizabeth, Jean, Alexander, James, and William. There are conflicting statements as to his wife or wives names. One line is given with one wife, Mary Jennings. Another has two wives, first Hannah McCampbell, who died in Ireland before 1760, and probably the mother of all children older than Alexander, Jr., who was probably the oldest child of the second wife, Mary Gilmore, as there is a persistent tradition that Alexander, Jr., was born at sea, June 1, 1760, though he is usually considered a Virginian. Also there is a tradition that there was thirty years difference between the ages of Robert and James, the two wives seem more probable. These seven children are all mentioned in Alexander, Sr.'s will, Probated at Rockbridge County, February 5, 1793. His wife's name is given in that instrument as Mary. She died in 1814.

Captain Alexander Hugh Telford

M, #3193, b. 1712, d. about 1793
Alexander's surname was sometimes written Telford or Tedford. It's unknown when he left Scotland to come to County "Tyrone," Northern Ireland. He married Hannah. I have seen her surname listed as "McCampbetl" or "McCune," and another wife Mary "Gilmore," (undocumented) who was listed in his will as Mary. One source, Threads of Ancestors, by Leila R. Mize and Jessie J. Mize, GA1956 (at NSDAR), page one says he was the son of Alexander Telford, Sr. of County Tyrone, N. Ireland. He was born in "ABOUT 1712-1713" in "County Tyrone, N. Ireland" (again, I've seen no documentation). He died between making his will on the 30th of Nov 1790 and 5 Feb 1793, the date his Rockbridge Co., VA will was probated. Until further proof is found, he died in about 1793.

Alexander's children by 2 or more wives:
(1) Hannah "McCampbell" or "McCune" was believed to be the mother of:
Robert, 8 Sep 1733 in N. Ire - Jun 1823 in KY Elizabeth, 7 May 1735-1797 William, b 1750 in N. Ireland -1830 Jean/Jane, 19 Oct 1754 - 30 Apr 1800 in VA, below David, Jul 1757-1809
(wife Hannah likely died between about Jul 1757 and about 1859)

(2) Mary "Gilmore" (Alexander's 1790 will) is probably the mom of next two:
Alexander, Jr., b 1 Jun 1760, d 22 May 1844 in OH, below James, b 1765, d 10 May 1821 in IN

Also arriving early in Augusta Co., VA and serving in the French &
Indian Wars were other Telford/Tedfords, Robert and David.

On 11 Aug 1756, he served in the French and Indian war in the Augusta Co. Militia, under Samuel Norwood. Norwood records a list of his men in his company, including Alexander Telford. Norwood was also an early landowner, between James and John McKee's property and others.

Birth1712In County Tyrone, Ulster Province, Northern Ireland. Family story is that he was born at sea.1
Marriagecirca 1730In County Tyrone, Ireland. Or possibly Hannah's sister Sarah. He apparently married either Hannah or Sarah McCampbell. Most of the books say that Hannah married a Cunningham (probably Moses) and Sarah married Alexander Telford. Birth dates are not known, but usually given much too late for Sarah or Hannah to be the mother of the children, but I'm putting her in assuming her actual birth date is more like 1712 than 1728.

An answer to the birth dates problem is he actually had 3 wives. Note that there is a 15 year gap between Elizabeth and William. if McCampbell is his third wife, she could have been born much later than if she is the mother of all 5 children. I have seen a suggestion of a wife named Mary Jennings.

BUT Hannah McCampbell born 1743 does not work! That's what I see on a McCampbell family data sheet. OK for Moses, but not for Alexander. Findagrave has two Hannahs in the family which is a solution but ridiculous!

McCampbell Genealogy also says they were born too late. This also switches the wives... She is born in 1745, he dies in 1781.

M6. Hannah, married Cunningham. No further record.
M7. Sarah McCampbell born about 1745, married Alexander Tilford
(Telford). Alexander Tilford was a captain in the Revolutionary
Army, and was killed in the Battle of Guilford Court House, N.C.,
in 1781. 7 children born.

I have 5 children from this wife, born from 1733 to 1757.2,3

This volunteer does fabulous research. The history book that claims Alexander married Sarah McCampbell is incorrect. She was my double 4 great aunt, as was her sister, Hannah, his wife. My DNA matches to descendants proves his wife was Hannah McCampbell, not McCune

James Tedford

M, #3196, b. 1730, d. 1787
This person is usually called James McCullough Tilford. I think this is to clarify which James Tilford this is, not an actual middle name.

James Telford (called by some James McCullough) Telford b 1730 son of Alexander b1690 and Mary Elizabeth McCullough.
That James and Elizabeth Catherine Mary McCoun b1726 had a son James born 1763

James Telford b1763 is a son of Alexander Telford and Mary Gilmore and married Jane/Jean McCloskey

Some people have conflated these two! Birth dates of course not well known.
