Margaret Talbot
F, #2933, b. 1684, d. 16 February 1746
Margaret married John Phelps. He was the son of William Phelps (1657-1748) and Anne Rachel (Gorsuch) Phelps (1656-1711). John's parents were born in England and died in Maryland.
John and Margaret (Talbot) Phelps had the following 4 known children: Col. Thomas Phelps, Co;. John Phelps, Samuel Phelps and William Phelps. John and Margaret Phelps lived, owned land and died in Goochland, Goochland, VA
Martha died in 1747 in Goochland, Goochland, Virginia, United States. She was 62 years old.
---findagrave.
Birth | 1684 | This birth dates are for the other Margaret! My note, but who is the "other Margaret"?1,2 |
Marriage | 1705 | ISSUES! 1) her father indicates she had no children when he died in 1713. 2) When was she born? If he married Margaret Martha Talbot and her parents were William Talbot and Catherine Ogg, she was too young to have John Phelps in 1705. Trees show it, but there is a birth record for a Katern believed to be her mother Catherine, in 1695. WikiTree does not know about the birth records? They are in Family Search, but that does not bother their brain there - the tree is just the same...
Early Colonial Settlers has no husband for Margarite Talbot b1711 of William Talbot and Katherine Ogg.
I think she may have married Benjamin Hammond b1706/7 Later Hammonds use the name Talbot as a middle name. https://msa.maryland.gov/megafile/msa/speccol/sc2900/sc2908/000001/000426/pdf/am426--369.pdf
In her husband's will she is called Margaret. She is also called Margaret in her father's will. (Where does the Mary come from?)
The Talbots were from Maryland. The Phelps were Goochland Co., VA. So relevant Phelps names in Baltimore County Families that is so full of Talbot and Ogg people.

She's in familysearch at least 3 times. Two with no sources, but the other has this: "Margaret Phelps, wife of John Phelps, was not the daughter of William Talbott and Catherine Talbott of Baltimore Co, MD.
In his will written Nov. 8, 1713, proved Nov. 16, 1713, William Talbott bequeathed to his daughter, Margaret, plantation, "Oldton's Garrision" and "Credentia". One of the witnesses of the will was Thomas Hammond.
On March 18, 1736, Benjamin Hammond conveyed all his interest in Credentia and 163 acres of Oldton's Garrison, which he held in right of his wife, Margaret, a daughter of William Talbot, to John Risteau, who married Catherine, widow of said William Talbot. Edward Grisell b1706 is son of Thomas Grisell (1670-1716) and Mary Margaret Talbot (1683-1746). That tree has no aprents for Mary Margaret talbot.
Judy's DNA as Samuel Anderson I have a link with Margaret Talbot and Edward Grisell called half only under Martha Margaret Talbot. Some have this Grisell born in Pennsylvania, but others do not. Not worth obsessing over that. Some call Grissell a second husband, but that make no sense because of a) where he lived, b) overlap of children, c) John Phelps died in 1746

George E. Robertson has a commission for this George Robertson of Chesterfield signed by Patrick Henry, Governor, in 1778, appointing him lieutenant colonel of militia for Chesterfield County; also another commission dated 1780 from Governor Edmund Randolph appointing him to office in the militia.
The will of this George Robertson is recorded in Chesterfield, dated 1795 (Book 5, I think) and names his sons, James, Archer and George, and daughter Anne. James Married Martha Field Archer, of Chesterfield, ("Archer's Hall," James River) and lived at "Goose Island," Amelia County. He was grandfather of George E., John C., etc., of Chesterfield County. Archer was my own great-grandfather (Walter A. Watson). Reverend George Robertson conveyed to his son George 2100 acres of land in Amelia County. Of this family were Colonel James Robertson, Sr., of Amelia, who died August 19, 1828, aged 77; James Robertson, Jr., of Amelia, State senator, 1816-22, who removed to Louisville, Ky.; John Robertson, Sr., of Amelia, who died 1826, aged 71; Dr. William H. Robertson, of Amelia, and General Beverley H. Robertson, C. S. A. (See Deed Books, Henrico County, Va., 1735).
Archer Robertson, of Chesterfield, married Fanny Fowlkes, of Nottoway County, and the children of this marriage were Joseph Samuel, James Craddock and Fanny Bet."

The first George Robertson died before this George, sometimes called George III, was born. There is an intervening generation. I think George Robertson III's father is James Robertson (1712-1758).
George Robertson
M, #2946, b. 1662, d. 1739
George Robertson, of the Church of England, was minister
of Bristol Parish in Colonial Virginia continuously for 46 years,
from 1693 until his death in 1739.1 It has been said that he
was the first of the Robertson name who immigrated to that
colony, but this statement probably is inaccurate as it seems
reasonably certain that members of one or more other Robertson
families either had preceded him there or arrived contemporaneously
with him.2
Little is known of the birthplace or birth date of the Reverend
George Robertson other than that he was reputed to have
been born in Scotland about 1668.3 It is said that he was educated
there at St. Andrews College, Fifeshire and graduated.4
After preparing himself for the cloth, his ascent in the ministry
was rapid: on December 20, 1691 he was ordained deacon; on
January 14, 1692 he was made priest; and on February 20, 1692
he was licensed by the Bishop of London as a missionary to go
to the Colony of Virginia. Sometime in that period, (possibly
1692) he was assigned as Chaplain to an English man-of-war5.
A reasonable explanation is that upon his appointment as missionary,
he resigned his naval chaplaincy and sailed from England
to pursue his calling in the New World.

Misc | | Wives and children. Two perplexing questions, and each a double question are next presented for solution, viz.: (1) how many times was the Reverend George Robertson married and what was the name (or names) of his wife (or wives) ?, and (2) what were the names of his children and who was their mother (or mothers) ? As the members of this Robertson line have been unable to agree on the proper answer to these questions, it is audacious, indeed, for one outside the line to attempt to aid in resolving these uncertainties.2 |
