Elizabeth ("Eliza") Keene

F, #3040, b. 6 June 1682, d. 26 July 1769
James Withers married ELIZABETH KEENE, the only surviving child of Matthew and Bridget Keene of Stafford County, Va. The date of her birth is unknown. Her father had bought land on the head of Potomac Creek in Stafford County on November 14, 1672 and died there in 1731. James and Elisabeth Withers family Bible, which was printed by John Basket in London, England, in 1715, contains the blrthdata of their 16 children. It is still in the possession of of one of their descendants, Mr. Monroe Withers (VI) 7I8, who lives near Cynthiana, Ky. As the deeds of Stafford County, Va., have been largely destroyed it is difficult to know exactly how much land James Withers owned. On Dec. 10, 1715 he received a grant for 1500 acres of land on the North side of the head of a branch of Licking Run in Stafford County and on March 25, 1727 one for 554 acres on branches of Potomac Run. Besides these two grants he bought 565 aeres of land from Bryant Young on the North of Potomac Run before 1727. He also bought a large tract of land from Rice Hooe in Prince William County, Va., of which he mentioned 800 acres in his will, leaving the residue of this land to be divided between two of his sons. Between 1751 and 1759 he bought 200 acres from Henry Field amd 50 acres from Snodol Horton. Later he bought 200 acres from William Waugh on the South side of Rocky Run and 100 acres from Joseph Waugh on the South side of Potomac Run. It was on this land that James Withers was living at the time of his death, which occurred in Overwharton Parish, Stafford County, Va., on June 3, 1746. He had made his will on June 1, 1746, which was probated in Stafford County on July 8, 1746. The inventory of his estate was made on that date and his personal property was valued at L 1883. 9. 4 1/2.

Elizabeth (Keene) Withers died in Stafford County, Va., on July 26, 1769. Many years after her death there arose in Fauquier County, Virginia, a lawsuit over her estate, which was not settled until 1788. This suit gives the names of those of her children who were still living in 1783 and the names of the issue of those who had died before then.

Elizabeth Withers

F, #3045, b. 23 December 1706, d. between 1746 and 1760
ELIZABETH WITHERS FIELD (II) 1701-17.., daughter of James and Elizabeth (Keene) Withers (I) I, was born in Stafford County, Va., on Dec 23, 1701. This date is taken from her fathers family Bible, but as the ink is very much faded, there remains a doubt as to the year. She married ABRAHAM FIELD of Culpeper County, Va., before 1719, as her second son John Field was born in 1720. Abraham Field was Vestryman of Great Fork Church in Culpeper County from 1744 to 1774. She was living when her father made his will in 1746, but had died before 1760 when Abraham Field's second wife Eleanor Field was mentioned in a deed in Culpeper County. Abraham Field died in Culpeper County, Va., in 1773. Elizabeth and Abraham Field had 8 children. Their son John Field (1720-1773) represented Culpeper County in the House of Burgesses in 1763.

Deathbetween 1746 and 1760In Culpeper County, Virginia, British America. 26 July 1798 is surely wrong. Withers family of County Lancaster has this:
1. Elizabeth3 Withers, b. Dec. 23, 1706, Stafford County, Virginia. Died after 1746; m. Abraham Field before July 21, 1723. He married secondly Eleanor and died in Culpeper County, Virginia in 1775. Left issue named Field.

The George Washington Farmer Jr. Family His Ancestors and Descendants has him with another wife.
"She died between 1750 and 1760 in Culpepper County. "

Her Wikitree entry:
She was named Elizabeth Field in the will of her father, dated 7th June 1746, which bequeathed 20 shillings to her to my a mourning ring. Her date of death is not known, but was prior to 1760, when Abraham's second wife Elianah was named on a deed to his son, John Field. Abraham's 1774 will named this second wife as mother to his younger children. Elizabeth is alleged to have been mother to his older eight children.1,3

Matthew specifies that this is the "land upon which he now lives" that is to go to his eldest grandson.
In his will of 1723, he specified that his daughter Elizabeth was to inherit the lands that she and her husband John Withers were currently living on, upon Matthew's death, and the remainder of his estate to also go to Elizabeth, after his wife, and Elizabeth's mother, Bridgett, died. So with this revision, his grandson inherits the tract of land that Matthew and Bridgett were living on. Daughter Elizabeth would inherit the tract of land, that she and James Withers and their children were already living on, and possibly other lands, "not" specified in Matthew's will.8,9
