Thomas Keene

M, #756, b. 1593, d. January 1652/53
Thomas Keene, father of Susanna Keene, who married John Garner, was born, presumably in England, in 1593, according to a deposition which he made in 1648 in which he stated he was 55 years old. (Md. Arch., Vol. 4, p. 452) He may have been the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Gosnold) Keene of Suffolk, England.1 We first find Thomas Keene living on Kent Island. This island, which lies just off the coast of Maryland in Chesapeake Bay, was first colonized in 1631 when Col. William Clayborne of Virginia led a band of about 100 colonists there and established a trading post. In 1632 the colonists sent a representative to the Virginia Assembly at Jamestown. However, Lord Baltimore had been granted a claim which overlapped that of Virginia and on February 27, 1634, after a long and stormy voyage, 300 of his colonists reached Maryland. A conflict then arose between the Kent Islanders, who wished to belong to Virginia, and the Marylanders who claimed the island for their colony. This dispute lasted for fifteen years.

In December 1636 Capt. George Evelin appeared on Kent Island and put himself in the good graces of the inhabitants by seeming to favor their claims to Virginia' allegiance. Early in 1637, however, he changed sides and by trickery and double-dealing managed to supplant Col. Clayborne as leader of the colony. He was given the title of Commander of Kent Island by Gov. Calvert of Maryland and became a virtual dictator over the inhabitants. Streeter2 says "John Sturman, Sr. and Thomas Keyme, coopers," were directed to devote their time to making pipe-staves, assisted hy seven servants. April 30, 1638, we find this record: "Entered by Capt. George Evelin for the Manor of Evelinton in the Baronie of St. Maries :"3 Following this were the names of twenty-three men, among them Thomas Keane, William Medcalf, Matthew Roadham and Thomas Orley, all of whom later moved to Northumberland County, Virginia, just across the Potomac River from St. Marys County, Maryland. This might mean that Capt. Evelin was responsible for bringing these colonists to Kent Island from England or merely that he took them from Kent Island to St. Marys. Many of the names listed were mentioned by Streeter as having been on Kent Island.

Thomas Keene may have been one of the original settlers of Kent Island who went there from Virginia with Col. Clayborne in 1631. If he did live for a while on St. Marys, he later returned to Kent Island, where on November 9, 1640, he patented 100 acres of land in Hog Pen N eek lying between Thicketty Creek on the North and Hog Pen Creek and Chesapeake Bay on the West.4 We know that his eldest son was born on Kent in 1642. The Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1633-47, give an assessment by Lieutenant Grall and Council for levying 2000 pounds of tobacco to the account of the last expedition - "levies upon the county of Kent after the rates following." Among those levied upon was Thomas Keyne. 5
5. Maryland Historical Magazine, Vol. V, p. 108.

In 1644, Col. Clayborne removed to Virginia, taking 100 men, for each of which he received 50 acres of land on the south side of the York River.6 Thomas Keene was claimed as one of these headrights, though this claim was not recorded until 1653. The land grant states that William Clayborne "came up the Pamunkey River in the narrows abutting on the mouth of a creek called Tankes, parting same land from the land of Captain John West's running west to a point of land whereon said Col. Clayborne landed his army under his command, in 1644." Thomas Keene may have served for a time with Col. Clayborne near West Point, Virginia. However, in 1648 he was in St. Marys County, Maryland, where he made the deposition stating his age.

Thomas Keene had moved to Cherry Point, Northumberland County, Virginia by December 9, 1650, on which date he and William Presley appraised an estate. (North. R. B. 1650-52, p. 48) April 13, 1652, an oath of allegiance to England was taken by a number of Northumberland colonists as follows: "Those names here subscribed do promise and engage ourselves to be bound and faithful to the Commonwealth of England as it is now without King or House of Lords." Among other signers were Thomas Keene, Henry Rayner and Thomas Broughton, successive husbands of the same wife. (North. 0. B. 1, p. 72) September 20, 1652, Thomas Keene was paid 625 pounds of tobacco out of the estate of Henry Barnes. (North. 0. B. 2, p. 289) October 13, 1653, we find recorded: "Now Know we that I the said Richard Bennett Esq. Governor give and grant unto Thomas Keene five hundred twenty seven Acres of Land Scituate lying and being in the County of Northumberland and abutting Northwest upon the Severall Lands of Ralph Horsly and Edward Coppedge South and South East upon Claughtons Creeke and North East upon Cherry poynt the said Land due unto the said Thomas Keene by and for the transportation of Eleven persons into this Colony to have and to hold ... " (L. Gr. B. 3, p. 61) Headrights mentioned were Thomas Orley (twice), Archibald Read, Thomas Watson, Margaret Browne, John Earle and wife, Thomas Keene, Mary Keene and William Keene. This. was recorded after the death of Thomas and the patent was renewed March 18, 1662.

Thomas Keene was a cooper and possibly a merchant as well as a planter, as .shown by his will. Evidence in Maryland Archives (B. 5, p. 183) would also indicate that he was a cooper and "directed the making of pipe staves."

MiscParents- Thomas Keene with wife Gosnold is considered very unlikely... I have disconnected Thomas Keene b about 1570 and Elizabeth Gosnold because it is unlikely they are our Thomas Keene's parents.

There is no proof, plus he was a cooper and he was illiterate (signed will with an X)
* There is no evidence that Thomas Keene of Virginia was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Gosnold) Keene of England. We do know that Thomas and Elizabeth Keene had a son named Thomas of the right age to be our Thomas of Virginia. We also know that they had some nephews who moved to Virginia in the same time period. Other than this circumstantial evidence, no known source proves the connection.

Note immigration and marriage dates and places...

Some historical background to the 1635 record is that of the approximate 7,300 immigrants to the Virginia colony between Dec 1606 and Feb 1625, just over 6,000 died, many within a very short period of arrival. Of the 3,500 who arrived in the three year period between 1619 and 1621, only about 500 survived, one author noting a decision to immigrate almost akin to suicide, yet Thomas may have done so near that time, or not long after, and had the good fortune to survive, any potential wife he might have had, not so.

Occupation1638Cooper. One player in the intrigue of the conflict over Kent Island, a Capt. George Evelin/Evelyn (a partner who “betrayed” Claiborne), and effectively “ruled” Kent Island for a time, was noted by S.F. Streeter in the 1868 publication by the MD Historical Society of his The First Commander of Kent Island with two relevant entries, both from 1638: “John Struman, Sr. and Thomas Keyme, coopers, were directed to devote their time to making pipe-staves, assisted by seven servants”, and on April 30, 1638, ”Entered by Capt. George Evelin for the Manor of Evelinton in the Baronie of St. Maries”, Governor Calvert provided a land grant to Evelin for the “transport” of twenty-three men (including freemen) “to Maryland”, among them Thomas Keane. Mary ("Margie") Thorley

F, #757, b. about 1620, d. before 10 February 1661/62
Mary Thorley was born about 1620. Her parents are unknown. She may have been born in the colonies or immigrated at a young age with her parents.

In 1638 Mary was about 18 and living in Kent Island, Maryland when she married Thomas Keene. Thomas was almost 30 years older than her. They had 5 children together. Thomas Keene was recorded in Kent Island as well as St. Mary's, MD at various points up until 1650 when the family moved to Northumberland County in the Northern Neck of Virginia.

Thomas made a will in November of 1652 and passed away less than two months after. He left their plantation and estate to Mary for her use in bringing up their children. Months after his death a land patent was granted to Thomas for 527 acres in Northumberland County, the land appears to have gone to Mary. In March of 1653 the Northumberland County Court granted 200 acres of land for the transport to the colony; herself and children Thomas, William and Susan.

Mary lived on almost ten years longer than Thomas and remarried twice having one more child. Her second husband was Henry Rayner, one of the witnesses to Thomas Keene's will. She married third to Thomas Broughton. When Mary made a will in 1662 she named four of her five children with Thomas Keene.

Or a Thomas Thorley

https://www.ancestry.com/genealogy/records/edward-thorley-24-21c4thf

A possible father is Edward Thorley (ca 1590 - 1679)BUT note Thomas Keene's birth is said to be 1593. When the above Edward Thorley's will he calls Thomas Keene his COUS. not his step son. But the word cousin could mean many things at that time. [Colonial Chesapeake Famlies suggest this person might be Thomas Keene II.]

Edward the son are sometimes reported to have died the same year. Whose will is that?

"Maiden name..............Mary "Margie" Thorley (believed to be the sister of Edward Thorley of Anne Arundel County, MD........ his will was probated Feb 10, 1678/9, which mentions his cousin (nephew) "Thomas Keene", probably the son of Mary and her first husband Thomas Keene, l. Mary died circa 1662-1664,( after 3 marriages). Her supposed brother Edward's will was probated in 1678. No records of Mary's parents have been found. Based on the information from Edward's will regarding "To my cousin Thomas Keene, personalty", I believe that Mary was a Thorley, and the sister of Edward Thorley of Anne Arundel County, Maryland.

Some say her father was Matthew Thorley, about which nothing is known.

On the other hand, Colonial Chesapeake Families suggests her father might have been a James or Thomas Thorley (or he was her brother?).9

Thomas Garner

M, #768, b. about 1669, d. 1726
Thomas Garner2, one of the sons of John Garner1 of Northumberland and Westmoreland Counties in Virginia. He was probably born about 1670 and lived until 1726. His first home away from his father's house was in Stafford County, Virginia, which had been formed from Westmoreland County, the seat of his parents' home. He had moved a considerable distance west of the family, but still lived in the Northern Neck, that area between the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers. He probably moved to that area around 1700; he was a witness to a will in Stafford County on September 10, 1700. Robert Bennett Bean in The Peopling of Virginia (Boston, 1938), pp. 74-92, states that a Garner was among the earliest settlers of Fauquier County, divided off from Stafford-Prince William Counties in 1759. By 1715 Thomas Garner owned around 2000 acres in the area of Tinpot and Licking Runs, he being the original grantee of certain parcels of land received from Lady Fairfax, sole proprietor of the Northern Neck. Thomas Garner married Mary Bushnell, daughter of Charles Bushnell. Thomas died in the Summer of 1726, his will being dated June 8, 1726.

Matthew Keene

M, #772, b. about 1650, d. 1731
Matthew Keene was perhaps the youngest child of Thomas and Mary Keene and was probably born after their arrival in Virginia about 1650 since no record has been found of a claim of headright for him. He moved to Stafford County. His mother left him in her will one-half of 870 acres of land at Yeocomico in Westmoreland County. The other half was to go to her friend, Thomas Daniell. All this land apparently went to Matthew eventually as it seems to be the land which he deeded to his nephews, John and Henry Garner. In 1705 George Eskridge of Westmoreland County was given power of attorney by Matthew Keene of Stafford County. Matthew Keene died in 1731.

Thomas Keene

M, #773, b. about 1570, d. MAYBE 1613
There is no actual evidence that "our" Thomas Keene is the son of Thomas Keene and Elizabeth Gosnold. There are many discussions of this problem online. The problem is lack of hard evidence. That is unlikely to be found. It isn't clear what would be wrong evidence...

Elizabeth Gosnold did marry a Thomas Keene in England. That couple did have a son Thomas Keene, named as a grandson in the will of Robert Gosnold of Earleshall, County Suffolk, Esq., 1615.

On the plus side, a number of Gosnolds did come to America, so that a child of Elizabeth Gosnold would do so would not be unusual. Also, the Gosnolds were in financial trouble due to being on the wrong side of politics and lost Otley.

On the plus side, a Thomas Keene came to America sponsored by Col Clayborne. It would be interesting to know more about the other people he sponsored.
Keene, Tho., 1653, by Colo. Sm. Clayborne (Sec. of State)
On the minus side, it is possible there were TWO Thomas Keene's in this area at that time. If that's the case, there is not much if anything that is inconsistent with a single person (like different wives, etc).

On the plus side, our ancestor was named Susanna Keene. Thomas Keene I also had a daughter named Susanna.

On the minus side, Thomas Keene b 1593 was illiterate.

Robert Gosnold, III

M, #775, b. about 1534, d. 1615

About Sir Robert Gosnold, III

Robert Gosnold III, Esquire was born in 1534 in Swilland, Suffolk, England. He was the son of Robert Gosland II (b. c. 1512 at Otly, Suffolk, d. 1559) and Mary Vesey (b. c.1516 in Hadleigh, Suffolk).

Robert married Ursula Naunton (1545-1615), daughter of Sir William Naunton (1506-bef. 1557) and Elizabeth Wingfied (c. 1520-1530 d. 1592).

Ursula's maternal grandparents were Sir Anthony Wingfield of Letheringham, Suffolk and Lady Elizabeth de Vere Wingfield.

Robert Gosnold III and his wife Ursula had eleven children:

1...Robert 2...Anthony 3...John 4...Thomas 5...Mary 6...Dorothy 7...Ursula 8...Anne 9...Elizabeth 10..Richard 11..Edmund

Robert was the uncle of Captain Bartholomew Gosnold and his brother Anthony. Their father was Anthony, brother of Robert. Bartholomew was vice admiral of the London Merchants fleet of three ships that sailed to Virginia on December 20, 1606, arriving in April, 1607. He is considered a primary force in the colonization of Virginia, having obtained a charter for the Virginia Company from King James I to settle Virginia. Unfortunately, he died on August 22, 1607, four months after arrival in Jamestown from malaria. His brother Anthony drowned, along with a small party from the Jamestown settlement who were attempting to cross the James River to Hog Island in a storm in 1609.

Otley Hall, Suffolk County, as seen in the photos at the right was the ancestral home of the Gosnold family. From this area, many of the early Virginia colonists were recruited by Captain Bartholomew to sail to Jamestown.

If you are lucky, the family home of Robert Gosnold III and Ursula Nauton, called Otley Hall is open for visitors.(grandparents 13 generations ago) In his will, dated 1615, Earleshall, county Suffolk, he mentions his dau. Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Keene, for L8/yr, and then mentions his grandsons Henry and Thomas Keene for L20. Otley Hall is usually open only a handful of days a year to the public, depending on the mood of the current owners, who are at present extremely nice folks who have a busy family.Check out the 7 days available to join a tour in 2009.

"After the Gosnolds left in 1674, the house was let to tenant farmers for more than 200 years,” says Beaumont. “They didn't remove anything or maintain anything, so the place settled in and remained untouched.” In fact, Otley Hall is regarded as the oldest house in Suffolk to have survived the centuries largely unaltered."

Inside the front foyer of Otley is a family tree chart, which you have mentioned in a prior post, but our American kinfolk are not well documented.A partial outline of the family chart is at the back of the Otley Hall guide booklet.Admitedly there are a few errors in the old chart, because of early mistakes in documentation. Some Keene’s are married into the family before 1615, as I have referenced a few in my following notes. As we know, Ursula was the daughter of Elizabeth Wingfield and William de Naunton, and the granddaughter of John Wingfield and Elizabeth de Vere.I love the cherished scrolled paneling inside the library, which was a wedding gift to Ursula from Robert. There are many deVere homes in England, and I live near Burleigh House, but I most love the small and austere Hedingham Castle, which is very near Cambridge.Check out that website:
