8th Territorial Governor & 1st Governor of Colorado 1875—1879
7th Governor 1891—1893
Biography
"Colorado's 8th Territorial Governor, 1st elected Governor and the 7th Governor, was born in Eddyville, Kentucky, on April 25, 1826.
His father passed away soon after his birth, and his mother moved the family to Illinois. Settling in Bloomington, Routt attended the public schools, and apprenticed as a carpenter. He entered politics when he was elected Sheriff of McLean County in 1860. Routt resigned from the sheriff's office in 1862 to serve during the Civil War.
Gov. John Routt served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: 1861- Mustered out: 1865- Side: USA
Regiment(s): 94th Regiment, Illinois Infantry
He was Captain of the 94th Illinois Volunteer Regiment, and fought at the Battle of Prairie Grove and Vicksburg. He earned the reputation of a courageous fighter and was promoted by General Ulysses S. Grant to the rank of Colonel.
After his military service, Routt was elected Treasurer of McLean County and served from 1865 to 1869. He was appointed in 1869 by President Grant to serve as U.S. Marshal for the Southern District of Illinois, and in 1871 he was appointed Second Assistant Postmaster General. He served in this capacity until March 29, 1875, when President Grant rewarded him with the territorial governorship of Colorado.
During 1855-1859, John L. & Hester Ann lost 3 of their infant children, Cyrus, William & Mary Belle.
In 1863 they lost another baby girl, Elma Ann, almost 2 years, and then 9 years later they lost another baby girl, 6 months old,
Grace was born in Jan. 1872, and then the unthinkable, their mother, Hester passed away May 1872 and 2 months later Grace died as well, leaving John L. to raise 3 very young children.
He married, Eliza "Lila" Pickrell on 21st of May 1874 in Decatur, Macon County, Illinois.
Routt's administration was involved with the preparation of the territory for admission into the Union. On August 1, 1876, Colorado officially became the 38th State of the Union. Routt was elected Colorado's first governor, and during his term he served as president of the state land board, obtaining some of the best land with grants from Congress. He also intervened in the town of Creede, placating squatters who were contesting the state's land claims. Routt did not seek reelection, left office, and returned to his mining and ranching interests. He served as mayor of Denver from 1883 to 1885, and was reelected to the governor's office in 1891. During his second term, construction started on the long-delayed state capitol, and a controversy erupted on the floor of the House of Representatives involving committee appointments and the selection of the speaker. The Supreme Court mediated and ruled on the legality of the legislature's resolutions.
After leaving office in 1893, Routt worked successfully with the Colorado Non-Partisan Equal Suffrage Association in convincing voters to support the passage of the legalization of women's suffrage.
Governor John Rout died in Denver on August 13, 1907."

Family: Martha Garner (b. 10 November 1708, d. after 14 October 1765)
Birth | 10 November 1708 | In Northumberland County, Virginia, British America. I see no evidence for this date or where he was born except findagrave which is not a source really. No tombstone, no grave, just words. |
Marriage | 1730 | In Stafford, Stafford, Virginia, British America.1,2,3 |
Death | October 1765 | At age 56 in Stafford County, Virginia, British America.4,5 |
Misc | | Father: George Routt. George Routt b1692 is the father of Peter Routt b1708. He is the son of George's first wife name unknown), son in law of his second wife. He is witness to the will. George's second wife, Martha Courtney, mother of his wife and his own mother in law, names in her will "my daughter Martha Rout & her husband Peter". and later "Martha & her husband Peter Rout".
Richard Routt Sr. is often listed as the father of Peter Routt b 1708. Unfortunately for this theory, a will exists for Richard Routt Sr and he mentions his children, but no mention of a Peter. The timing is also suspicious since his "mother" would have been 53. Furthermore, there is a comment that since Richard Routt Sr mentions some grandchildren, it is unlikely that our Peter Routt is from this line... This is explained in a comment on the page below. BUT he only names grandchildren if the parent is dead... George is a possibility for the father, but there is basically no information about George.

Vincent Garner
M, #706, b. 1666, d. 30 September 1710
Vincent Garner, son of John Garner and his wife, Susanna, by his father's will was left "the whole plantation and land I now live on together with the lands adjoining," also land lying in Horn Point, his long gun, his hanger with the yoke of oxen and one-half of the money from the sale of the sloop, The Outcry.
Vincent Garner died in Northumberland County, evidently a comparatively young man, since four of his children were less than 10 years old. His will was dated September 30, 1710.

John Garner
M, #708, b. 1633, d. 26 May 1702
Parents
Family: Susanna Keene (b. between 1644 and 1646, d. 28 March 1716)
Birth | 1633 | In England. He stated in a deposition in 1663, in Northumberland County, Virginia, that he was thirty years old. [North. R. B. 15, p. 102]1,2,3,4,5,6 |
Marriage | about 1660 | In Northumberland County, Virginia, British America. Some time between 1659, when Susanna Keene was given her share of her father's cattle and in 1662, when her mother's will names her as Susanna Garner, John Garner and Susanna Keene were already married and had a daughter; therefore, 1660 or '61 would be a close estimate for their marriage date. John and Susanna lived near the present village of Lewisetta on a neck of land called Cherry Point, nowadays known as Cowart's Point. ---Garner Genealogy 1580-Present7,8,9,10,11,12,3,13 |
Death | 26 May 1702 | At age ~69 in Kinsdale, Westmoreland, Virginia, British America. John Garner died in 1702. His will was dated January 22, 1702, and was proved May 26, 1702, and recorded January 1, 1703 in Westmoreland County, Virginia,1,9,3 |
Burial | | At John Garner Plantation in Kinsale, Westmoreland, Virginia, British North America.1 |
Misc | | Biography which surely is part fiction. The witch story, the Lion Inn story and the uncle with money both seem to be lies.
-------- As to John' origins, I think the land patents are good evidence that the John Garner of the 1650 land patent of Lewis Burwell in Northumberland County is the John Garner of the 1637 land patent of William Farrar II in Henrico County.Wherever Thomas Broughton may have originally come or who his relations may have been in Boston, in the years prior to his being a headright in Burwell's 1650 patent, he lived and owned land in the lower York River area.In fact, of the headrights listed in that 1650 patent, other than John Garner, seven of them, including Burwell and Broughton, had previously lived and some had owned land in the James and York River areas to the south.Four of the headrights are listed on both the 1650 Burwell patent and the 1654 Thomas Hobkins patent: Broughton, Ann Williams, Edward Dawson, and John Garner. On both patents these four are listed together and in the same order.Although not proof, this is good evidence to me that John Garner was part of a group of settlers who were recruited as headrights from the James and York River areas and transported to the Northern Neck. This seems even more probable given the fact that John was only 16 or 17 years of age at the time and would probably have had to attach himself to a group of older settlers to avail himself of the land opportunities. Thus, he would be the John Garner of the 1637 patent who arrived with his father Richard by then.
In closing, in the almost two years since I have been to Shrewsbury, I have failed to find any evidence that any of Nathan's documents exist or did exist. The 1631 will of a Richard Garner (allegedly the uncle of the emigrant Richard Garner, father of John)that Nathan found in London and that Gwen used as the basis for her Garner Shropshire pedigree has been found to be a hoax. Make of all this what you will. However, even putting aside all that, my research has nontheless led me back to the Richard Garner of Shrewsbury as being still the most likely candidate for John's father. For my current findings on Richard's probable descent.

Misc | | Parents. His father may have been Richard Garner. Richard and John were transported by William Farrar to Farrar's Island. Even genealogies of William Farrar seem to have been polluted by false stories about the Garners... ... Having set those documents aside, IF the John Garner of the 1650 patent is the John of the 1637 patent (which I think is the case), a search of parish records available on ancestry.com and the IGI reveals only two John Garners born in England between 1631 and 1635 who had fathers named Richard: one in Lancaster in 1631 and the one in Shrewsbury in 1634.The one in Lancaster never emigrated, marrying in Lancaster in 1654.So that leads us back to the John and Richard of Shrewsbury. https://www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/garner/6455/4,5,6 |
Baptism | 2 September 1634 | In St. Chad, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England, Possible but maybe not likely.4 |
Immigration | 1650 | Northumberland County, Virginia, British America, at Indentured servant. There are multiple immigration records for John Garner. Because of the made-up stories, it is more difficult to straighten it out... See both.
Those who have done research on the Garner family feel certain that John Garner was of English origin, though whether he came directly from England, from another American colony, or even from another part of Virginia,1 is not known. Following the beheading of Charles I in England in 1649 there was a great exodus to Virginia of Stuart sympathizers or Cavaliers, as they were called. John Garner may have come in from England on this wave of immigration.22,23,24 |

Susanna Keene
F, #709, b. between 1644 and 1646, d. 28 March 1716
Susanna Keene is believed to have been born at Kent Island, Maryland. Kent Island is located near present day Annapolis, Maryland. It is the largest island in the Chesapeake Bay, and consists of 31.62 square miles. The first settlement on Kent Island consisted of twenty five colonists from England, settling there August 21, 1631. It was named Winston's Island. Susanna's father would have been an early settler there, but not among the first twenty five. It had been occupied by Native Americans for 12,000 years, prior to the English settlement in 1631, and the founding of Kent Fort. "Winston's Island" was later named "Kent Island", named for Kent, England, home of one of the early colonists. Today, Kent Island is a part of Queen Anne's County, which was founded in 1706, (after Susanna's birth) and named for Queen Anne of Great Britain (b. 1665 d. 1714). Susanna was the daughter of Thomas Keene, Jr., born 1593 in England and died 20 Jan 1652/53, Northumberland County, Virginia, and his wife Mary (or Margie) Thorley, believed to be from Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Susanna had three siblings, brothers William Keene, Sr., Thomas Keene, and Matthew Keene.
Susanna married John Garner (1633-1703) between 1659 and 1661, in Northumberland County, Virginia.
Susanna and John lived in Northumberland County, later moving farther north to Westmoreland County, Virginia. John Garner died in 1702. His will was dated January 22, 1702, and was proved May 26, 1702, and recorded January 1, 1703 in Westmoreland County, Virginia,
Susanna lived another 14 years, after John's death. She did not leave a will. Her estate was inventoried March 28, 1716.
Susanna and John had 10 children: John Garner, Henry Garner, Vincent Garner, Thomas Garner, Parish Garner, Benjamin Garner, James Garner, Mary Garner, Susan Garner, and Martha Garner.

---Garner Genealogy 1580-Present9,10,11,12,5,13,14,15 |

Benjamin Hardin
M, #710
Marriage | 18 March 1785 | In Fauquier, Virginia, United States. One of the three sources for this marriage says her father is Daniel. That does not make sense from what I know, so I was happy to find this on findagrave. I agree they were siblings, but I think their mother might be Catherine White. Withers was another wife.
"page 156 of the book "Fauquier Families 1759-1799" by John P. Alcock (1994), is listed the following entry: Benjamin Hardin marriage bond 3-16-1785 to Nancy Routt, Dau. of John Routt, witness Daniel Routt, witness and bondsman Lewis Grigsby. The marriage of Daniel Routt to Martha Stiglar on 9-6-1788 was also listed on page 305, with Lewis Grigsby as bondsman. Thus I believe Daniel and Nancy were siblings, the children of John Routt, and Mary Martha Withers."
Note, John Routt has, in my tree, TWO daughers named Nancy! One is "Nancy Ann" but most official records are lucky to get any name right, much less include two. By different wives.1,2 |
