Ann ("Nancy") Fletcher
F, #1523, b. about 1763, d. before 1804
Some have her as Nancy Lydia. Is that her name or a conflation of two people? I have Ann "Nancy"...
Parents
Birth | about 17631 | |
Marriage | 14 December 1781 | In North Carolina, British America.1,2 |
Death | before 1804 | In Wilkes County, North Carolina, United States.1 |
Misc | | Parents. No real evidence for her father. It makes sense based on where we think she was born and where she died and who she married... But that's it.
The Sebastian line has to be considered dubious.
The will names no female children of James and Rachel. Explicitly says it does not name all heirs.
Some believe she was a daughter of William Spencer.
Trees seem to have James b1725 or Peter b1736 For heavens sake, Peter was born in Massachusetts and died in New Hampshire as did his wife, yet had Ann in Virginia! Someone even got into the SAR based on a "Lydia" Fletcher marrying a Spencer, and then a John Harvey Spencer! Service was in New Hampshire!
This is a Lydia Fletcher who married a John Spencer in New Hampshire and her family, with a similar child's name: John Harvey vs John Hervey
Other people try to find or invent a James to fit.
But here is a birth record for Lydia Fletcher in New Hampshire: https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/213559:2204
Scott's DNA points to a Peter Fletcher with children Ruth, Ebenezer, James as well as Ann. 43 to Ann and only 3 to the others. But those three do have a reasonable DNA match.
We have a marriage of James Fletcher and Rachel Sebastian in 1745. But in his will his wife is Susannah. Most people believe Susannah was a second wife. So it's not clear that the last child, Nancy, is the daughter of Rachel Sebastian.2 |
Misc | | DNA Matches. May 3, 2024 ONLY two matches with a single sibling of Nancy Fletcher and those point to Daniel Routt and Martha Stigler rather than the Fletcher people! NB this is the Kimsey line and Routt and Stigler are in the Anderson line.
With Scott's small tree, it finds an Ann L Fletcher (1763-1815) with the same children as we have for our Ann "Nancy" and John Harvey "Bull" Spencer. Common ancestors John Harvey Spencer and Ann Fletcher. and some from Scott's father's side. 79 matches with Ann Nancy Lydia Fletcher.
The other Nancy and John Spencer appear to be a real family NOT in Virginia.
43 matches with Peter Fletcher. 40 with Ann L Fletcher and then Ruth and Ebenezer common ancestor Peter Fletcher and Ruth Adams, and a nonexistent James in that family... but connecting to Peter Fletcher and Ruth Adams, nonetheless... so these three matches are not overwhelming. The James Fletcher one has him marrying a Azubah Gale and dying in New York. BUT WAIT! Someone did find a birth record for a James Fletcher son of Peter Fletcher and Ruth! BUT he was born 3 years before his first child was born in the south. 26 Dec 1778 in New Hamphsire. https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/24468:2559?ssrc=pt&tid=113041720&pid=260111014351
------------------ 22 matches to siblings of Nancy Fletcher. Scott Borgmier matches to 3 siblings, he has 35 matches to "Ann" b1763-1815, so "Ann" is the same person as Nancy. In one tree she is called Ann "Nancy" Lydia Fletcher (I think Lydia is bogus to get wrong parents!) |

Captain James Fletcher, Sr
M, #1524, b. about 1725, d. 1805
James Fletcher received a grant in March, 1779 for 400 acres on the south side of the Yadkin River near the Moravians lower line opposite an island below the mouth of Cub Creek. By 1787 he owned 2054 acres which included 1034 acres of "western land" and was the only Fletcher that appears on the tax list. James married Susannah (probably his second wife) about 1743. It is believed that James Fletcher was born about 1725 in Fauqueir County, Virginia.
James Fletcher was one of five delegates from Wilkes County elected to the Consititutional Convention in 1778 along with Col. Richard Allen, Col. William Lenoir, Captain John Brown and Captain John Herndon.
January 1792 - James Fletcher prays reimbursement for money advanced ($920) in January 1779 and March 1780 to Charles Gordon, Colonel of the Wilkes Regiment of Militia, for the purpose of securing supplies for drafts from the regiment to the aid of South Carolina. Referred to Committee, 7 January, 1792. The NCGJ, Volume II, No. 3, July, 1976. This request was denied and was outstanding when James died in 1805. James Fletcher's Will
From Jarvis family website, Fletcher family page:

Birth | about 1725 | In Probably England. A document about his son James' revolutionary war history states: "James Fletcher was born in Culpeper County, Virginia, the son of James and Susannah Fletcher who came to the United States from Cumberland, England." But this is almost certainly not true of his wife Susannah because we have records for her family.

Misc | | Parents - no evidence. I see no evidence that Henry Fletcher and Dorothy Torr are his parents. Some people give a birth date of 5 SEP 1725, Cumberland, England so maybe something is known, but I don't know it. The other suspicious brother, Joseph, was also born in 1725 but he's also suspicious.
Some have his father Henry Fletcher and his mother Dorothy Hildreth.
There is a LOT of conjecture that he is descended from Fletchers in New England and even (dubious) DNA matches using Scott's small tree... Including SAR submissions. But this seems VERY improbable. See other notes on this.
Familysearch has John and Sarah Fletcher from Lancaster, England with James born 12 Sept 1725. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JW91-7HX |
Misc | | DNA Matches - good. June 2024 Judy's DNA on Dessie The two with James b 1768 are now with James and Rachel Susannah. 27 matches with Nancy.
May 2024 29 matches to Nancy Fletcher (27) and James Fletcher (2) BUT the two with James have common ancestors Daniel Routt and James Stigler. BUT there must be some match to James... one of them is 35cM and the other 15cM. So there must be two matches.
Scott with the small tree has ancestors of Peter Fletcher and Ruth Adams as parents of Ann Fletcher. BUT these people live in Massachusetts and New Hampshire and all children EXCEPT Ann Nancy. Sure... Yet there is DNA matching...
_________________ Scott Borgmier has 38 matches with 3 children of James Fletcher. Aug 2023 Scott has 3 matches to 3 children of Peter Fletcher b1736. That is the Massachusetts- New Hampshire Fletcher. Related? The other matches are with Ann "Lydia". Look at our person in there and the first one in the list has the same parents as I do! Jan 2024 using my tree. 46 matches, most to Nancy. |

Rachel Susannah Sebastian
F, #1525, b. 6 January 1729/30, d. after 1811
There is a marriage record of a James Fletcher to Rachel Sebastian. In his will his wife is Susannah. This may be why some suggest there were two wives. Or she was Rachel Susannah Sebastian.
Parents
Birth | 6 January 1729/30 | In St. Paul's Parish, Stafford, Virginia, British America. I've seen 1730 and 6 Jan 1730 but no evidence. |
Marriage | 21 April 1745 | At Saint Pauls Parish in Stafford, Virginia, British America. May have been his second marriage.1,2,3 |
Marriage | 21 February 1807 | In Wilkes County, North Carolina, United States. |
Death | after 1811 | In North Carolina, United States.1 |
Misc | | DNA Matches. May 1, 2024 2 matches with Nancy. 2 matches with James Fletcher, BUT their common ancestors are with Daniel Routt and Martha Stigler. Quite high amounts, so probably multiple DNA connections.
2024 11 matches with Nancy Fletcher, so it doesn't really confirm Rachel Sebastian. BUT see Scott. Still doesn't confirm her name...
Scott's matches using my tree are 46 with Rachel Sebastian, 42 with Nancy Fletcher, 1 with Thomas, 4 with James Common ancestor is James Fletcher and Rachel Sebastian
2023 Scott Borgmier has 38 matches with 3 children of Rachel (Sebastian) Fletcher. But that went away in the latest incarnation! |
