Misc | | Bridges Freeman b1603. As a young man in his twenties he emigrated to the Virginia Colony by 1625, where he married. He was appointed to a position in a joint stock company of the Virginia Company, called the Magazine (or Magine), which was dissolved in 1620. When elected in 1629, he served one session of the House of Burgesses for Pasbyhay country, north along the James River, and in 1632 he served a session for the Chickahominy tract of land. As a Burgess, he rose in rank to Lt. Col. From 1635 to 1655 he amassed about 1550 acres of land in total referred to as the Tomahunn Plantation near the mouth of the Chicahominy River, on the south (Charles City County, VA.). He also owned land that extended east of the Chicahominy, James City, Co. VA, referred to as Freeman's Point. He was reelected in 1647 to the house of Burgesses. He was also appointed to the Governor's Council, in the provisional government of Virgina Colony, for two terms that ended about 1655. Bridges Freeman gave away a portion of his land according to his Last Will and Testament, and died between 1660-1680. One record states that Bridges Freeman was a Justice for James City County in 1680. A possible relative, Thomas Freeman, and some of the Bennet family were murdered by the Powhatan Indians in the Virginia massacre of 1623.

Holman Freeman
M, #966, b. circa 1714, d. 1782
Holman Freeman, Sr. was born in Virginia and married Sally Cox in Amelia County, Virginia on 13 June 1753. Holman and Sally Freeman migrated from Virginia to Georgia with two sons, three daughters and six Negroes, crossing the Savannah River on the 27th day of Sept 1773. Holman Freeman, Sr. had with him 18 pounds (about $90.) and contracted for land at McFaddan’s Camp on Chickasaw Creek in the area ceded by the Indians which later became Wilkes County.
He was too old for active participation in the American Revolutionary War, but he performed patriotic service by serving on a jury that tried certain Tories. Also he had four sons who served in the war with courage and determination. In retaliation for his jury duty and the military exploits of his four sons, the British severely beat and imprisoned in Augusta the elderly Holman Freeman, Sr, who died as a direct result of the injuries inflicted upon him.
The four sons (outlined below) distinguished themselves in such battles as Kettle Creek and the Siege of Augusta. Under Elijah Clark, they were part of the small hard-core of heros who for years stubbornly fought against great odds and obstacles to save Georgia from both the Indians and the British, earning for their area the nickname, “Hornet’s Nest.”

Agnes Crowley
F, #974, b. 1682, d. 1702
Agnes Crowley
1681 – 1702 • 2671-DSS
"Jeffery Crowley was Agnes Crowley's illegitimate child. Poor Agnes died in childbirth. She is the mother of the first Crowley to come to America in this our line of Crowleys. Because of a twist of fate that she was not married, our names are Crowley instead of Hopkins. Agnes’ father died seven years before Agnes died. It is interesting to wonder by whose authority and why Jeffery was named Crowley instead of Hopkins. Agnes Crowley was unmarried It is suspected that Jeffery Hopkins is Jeffery Crowley's father. Jeffery Hopkins was Agnes Crowley's employer. She was working as his maid. Agnes died as a very young girl giving birth to Jeffery who was her only child. Agnes’ last words were his name is Jeffrey. Agnes and Sarah Crowley were once jailed for not attending the Church of England. I don't know the relationship between Agnes and Sarah. Notes for Jeffery Hopkins; Agnes father, John Crowley was a servant of Jeffery Hopkins. Hopkins was married and had children both older and younger than Agnes. It is thought that he was named Jeffery after his alleged father Jeffery Hopkins. There is nowhere the name of Jeffery ever appears again either before or after this person in the Crowley family tree. Yet, it is only conjecture that Jeffery Hopkins was the father of Agnes's son Jeffery. This information was hand written from the records of the Church of England. Found in the city of Kinwarton, Warwickshire, England, the birthplace of Agnes."

The Hopkins Family of Kinwarton
Posted 09 Apr 2008 by saguarobob
The Hopkins family in Kinwarton is a distinguished one, often shown with the distinction "Mr." At one time Jeffrey Hopkins Sr and Jr signed a lease of church lands jointly as churchwardens in Kinwarton Parish. The Hopkins family came to Kinwarton long after the Crowleys. The first Crowley entry is in 1608, and the first Hopkins entry is in 1641. By 1657 Jeffrey Hopkins was serving as churchwarden, signing a lease of church lands, to which is also appended the signature of Thomas Crowley.
The Hopkins family was of considerable wealth, a fact which appears from that test of tests, the hearth tax returns. In the 1661-1673 returns Jeffrey Hopkins appears with 6 hearths, a figure only equalled by the hearths of the Rector of the Parish, John Cudworth. Comparably, each of the Crowleys appearing in those returns had one hearth only.
It is not difficult to determine whence came the hopkins family to Kinwarton. Jeffrey Hopkins, son of Jeffrey Hopkins, was baptized 1 Dec 1616 at Alcaster, Warwickshire, a few miles from Kinwarton, a place where the Crowleys appear in many entries. By age, Jeffrey Hopkins, the child baptized 1 Dec 1616, not appearing subsequently in Alcaster, is very probably the Jeffrey Hopkins who, with his wife Ann had a child Ann, buried at Kinwarton 16 Nov 1641, the first Hopkins entry at Kinwarton. At that burial, the younger Jeffrey was 25 years of age.
