Thomas Carr
M, #5383, b. 1641, d. November 1711
Thomas Carr was probably born in England before 1650. His origins are disputed. He emigrated from England to Virginia before 1701, possibly many years earlier.
The first clear record of his presence in America was the grant to him of a Virginia land patent dated 25 April 1701 for 546 acres in St. John's Parish in Pamunkey Neck, King William County, Virginia, for the transportation of 11 persons into the colony.
Thomas Carr was appointed a Justice of the Court for King William County as early as 1702, and High Sheriff in 1708-9.

Birth | 1641 | In England. 13 Mar 1646 From the other records, which may not be him, he may have been born in Wath Upon Dearne, Yorkshire, England. This is the right date only if he is Sir Thomas Carr...1,2,3,4,5 |
Marriage | 18 March 1677 | In England. Maybe reported to England? I read they sometimes did that...
Disputed Spouse
A prior version of this profile identified his spouse as Mary Garland, based on a database entry in the Ancestry database version of Yates, "U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900," which identifies a marriage between a Thomas Carr and Mary Garland in 1655, citing only "Source number: 1106.004; Source type: Pedigree chart." There is no evidence other than the common name to indicate that this is the same Thomas Carr, and the Yates index is not considered a reliable source for pre-1700 profiles managed by the Southern Colonies Project. See this G2G discussion for an explanation why.
According to at least one peer-reviewed article on Thomas, the identity of his spouse is unknown.[2] Mary Garland has therefore been detached from the profile.1,6 |
Death | November 1711 | At age ~70 in Carolina Co, Virginia, British America. There are signs that there is conflation between two people.

Disputed Origins
A prior version of this profile, without source, attached Robert Carr and Margaret Rutherford as his parents. Given the absence of any source supporting this connection, those parents have been detached.
In addition, a prior version gave a birth date of 13 March 1647 based on the baptismal record of "Thomas the sonne of ffrancis Carre of Brampton" who was baptized on 13 March 1646/7 at Wath-upon-Dearne in Yorkshire.[3] There does not appear to be any evidence establishing that this Thomas, son of Francis Carre who was baptized at Wath-upon-Carre in March 1646/7, was the same person as the Thomas Carr who appears in King William County, Virginia, beginning in 1701. A search of the Ancestry database "All Yorkshire, England, Church of England Parish Records, 1538-1873" for a Thomas Carr baptized between 1640-1650 yields at least 6 baptized in Yorkshire alone. A similar search in the FamilySearch database "England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975" yields at least a dozen possible baptized males named Thomas Carr. It is also possible that the Thomas Carr who emigrated was not baptized or that his baptismal record is not indexed in these databases. Without further evidence tying the emigrant to a specific Thomas Carr in England, his origins remain unknown.4 |
