Colonel Thomas Greenfield, Gent

M, #5183, b. 19 February 1648, d. 8 September 1715
He came from England to the Maryland colony in 1668 at the age of 21. He had attended Cambridge University. His transportation, along with 11 others, was paid for by Thomas Trueman, Esq.

He settled on the Brandywine Creek which was south of the Patuxent River and near the village that he named after his hometown, Nottingham. He married Martha Trueman at the age of 32. His estate was named Magookin which was near Baden, Maryland and became quite wealthy with his large tracts of land, slaves and tenants.

He was often in the House of Burgessess which was the first assembly of elected representatives of English colonists in North America. He also was the first High Sheriff of Prince George's County.

John Wight

M, #5184, b. about 1645, d. 23 July 1705
John Wight (White, Wright, Wishtt, Weighte, etc.), the second husband of Ann Fielder Gantt, appears to have arrived in Calvert County as a free immigrant in the early 1680s. In an unfortunate misidentification in what is usually otherwise the seminal history of the Colonial Maryland Legislature by Papenfuse et al. (Vol. 2, p. 887), he has been confused with a John White, gent., who came to Maryland (WC2: 321) in 1680 with his wife and four daughters, settling in Somerset County on the eastern shore, who died testate there in 1686 (WB4: 200).

Although the parentage of John Wight is unknown, use of the arms unique to the White Family of London recorded by the Herald’s in 1633/35 and 1674 by Ann Wight on an armorial seal placed on her will of 1726 suggested that he was likely a great-grandson of Thomas1 White of Norfolk by one of his two sons, Thomas2 of St. Mary Woolnoth, London, and Stratford Langthorne, Essex (PCC, 1626), or his brother William2 of Colchester, Essex, and was thus a nephew or cousin of Sir Steven3 (Stephen) White, Alderman of London (Grocer’s Guild; PCC 1678); further data needed.

John Wight of Calvert County, gent., married firstly by 1685–86 (Test Pro 13: 514) Mary Gittings, daughter of John Gittings (d. 1686); and his second wife was Margaret, widow of John Reade of Calvert County, who married thirdly Thomas Stagg, and then she died in 1686. Mary Gittings was born about 1666 and was dead by 30 August 1687, leaving an only child—John Wight Jr.—probably born about 1686. John Wight Sr. was literate and styled as gentleman in the earliest records. He became one of the most prominent citizens of Calvert County and later Prince George’s County in the 1690s and early 1700s. He was elected to the lower house of the legislature in the 1687–1700 and 1701–1704 sessions, serving on the Aggrievances Committee. He also served locally as justice for Calvert County in 1694 and Prince George’s County in 1695–1704 (of the quorum) and as the first coroner of Prince George’s County in 1697. John Wight was also styled as a captain of militia in 1695–1696. He was suspected of and was charged with “Jacobite sympathies” in 1698 and was a Presbyterian.

He died intestate in 1705, leaving a large estate of at least 1,025 acres of land and personal property valued at 1,915.0.8 English pounds, including 72 ounces of silver plate, 19 slaves, books, and a 1/16th ownership in the trading ship Samuel (administration bond file 23 May 1705 by Ann Gantt Wight in Prince George’s County). After payment of debts, the estate’s net worth totaled 1,792.9.1 pounds sterling, a huge fortune for the time.

Marriage
Death7 August 1672Probate at age ~50 in Trent Hall, St. Mary's County, Maryland, British America. As Dr. Truman left a personal estate of 600 pounds, a library valued at 40 pounds, and a home filled with valuable furnishings, he was either and extraordinarily successful physician for the period of his practice
1666-1672 (his death) - or he brought his capital from England. Most of his medical contemporaries accumulated only debts. There is no indication in the land records that he speculated in real estate and, as he held but one political office, Judge of the Quorum in Calvert in 1669, his political activities could have added little to his fortune.1
BurialAt Truman Family Cemetery in Huntersville, St. Mary's County, Maryland, British America. Dr. Truman, dying in 1672, was buried at his brother's home, "Trent Neck." We find on his gravestone: "Here lyeth the body of James Truman Gent who died the 7th of August 1672 being aged 50." This graveyard, on original "Trent Neck," is near Mechanicsville on a farm occupied in 1945 by Mr. Clyde Raley2,1
