James Rutherford

M, #5312, b. 1605, d. before 9 March 1668
Captain James Rutherford
 - b. abt 1605 Nisbet, Roxburghshire, Scotland
 - d. bef. 9/3/1668 -
An officer in the Scots Brigade of the Dutch army at Utrecht, Holland -
will: 3/9/1667-1668 Edinburgh
 - m. [1] Margaret Gladstaines/Gladstone 11/24/1639 Fort Crevecoeur, Netherlands

James Rutherford was an officer in the Dutch service. It was he who conveyed the invitation to his brother, the Rev. Samuel Rutherford, to become a professor at Utrecht. James' sons who fought at the battle of Boyne received lands in Tyrone and Down counties, Ireland. By deduction, James was the father of Rev. Samuel Rutherford, the Presbyterian minister in Ireland.

A Scots brigade existed in Holland as early as the 1570’s. From that time generations of Scots crossed the North Sea to serve their Dutch friends and allies. Late in the 18th century the Dutch disbanded their Scots Brigade.

Margaret Gladstone

F, #5313, b. about 1606, d. 16 May 1675
Margaret Gladstone was born about 1600 in Nisbet, Roxburghshire, Scotland.[1] She was the daughter of Mark Gledstanes (1582-1660) and Marion Wright (1585 - ). She had several siblings.

Her first marriage was in about 1623 to Thomas de Jongh (to be confirmed) and after his death, she married Captain James Rutherford. By this marriage there were at least four children, Rev James Rutherford Jr. (1645 - 1737), Rev John Henry Rutherford (1647 - 1734), Capt Robert Rutherford (1656 - 1728) and Rev Samuel Rutherford II (1659 - 1708).

Husband Capt. James Rutherford was a Scot who served in the Netherlands, a resident of Utrecht. James Rutherford was an officer in the Dutch service. It was he who twice conveyed an invitation to his brother, the Rev. Samuel Rutherford, to become a professor at Utrecht. The Dutch have records showing a Jheemes Rutherford marrying Maragreta Gledstein. The Hunthill Rutherfords intermarried frequently with the Gledstaines (Gladstones).

Margaret died on May 16, 1675 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.

MiscIs it true? "There are many reputable researchers who believe Elizabeth Rolfe and John Milner were the parents of Jane Milner md to Henry Pugh. These were prominent people and their history is most likely accurate. It is unfortunate that there are not more records to prove this lineage but the circumstantial evidence is compelling. I would not be so quick to dismiss this relationship. There are many tenuous links that are accurate. "
Comment in this WIkiTree article

The only reference to Elizabeth Rolfe growing to adulthood and becoming the wife of John Milner is in a chart prepared by R. Coleman Price, 1940, on file at the Virginia State Library. There is no documentation to confirm this statement.

In the article "Progenitors & Kinfolk of Abraham Childers, III" in the Virginia Genealogist, Vol. 34, page 11 there is a notation ..."Elizabeth Rolfe, whose parents were John Rolfe and his third wife Jane Pierce. This cannot be proved owing to the loss of the early Henrico Records..."3,1
