The Eskridge Family by Marjorie Aikmus

The Eskridges of Platte County are all descendants of Col. George Eskridge, an English barrister, who came to the Virginia Colony in the 1600s. He became a member of the House of Burgesses and had large landholdings. He was a guardian of Mary Ball, who named her first son, George, for him.

John Edwin Eskridge and his brother, Junius Wabsey Eskridge, were the first to come to Platte County. John had fought as a Confederate in the Civil War. Their father, Sydnor Eskridge, and siblings James, Elizabeth, Mary and Thomas came later.

John Edwin Eskridge, born 1843 in Virginia, died 1917 in Platte County. He married Elizabeth Virginia Fox 1865. Their children were (a) William, born 1869, married Pearl Boydston; (b) Emma – married Samuel Gralon, moved to Washington; (c) Josephine, born 1870, married Redmon Byrd. Their children were Clariet, George and Frank; (d) Martha E., born 1872, married John Henry, moved to Oklahoma, and died 1911. Their children: Albert, Ray, L.T., Roy, Jack, Jennie, Eva and Mattie; (e) George, born 1874, married Eleanor May Bouder, and died 1950. Their children: Lina, married Bill Riley and died 1973; Elsie, married George Johnson and died 1976; Mattie, married Tom Henslow; Stella, married George Earnshaw and
Lloyd, who married Julia Brenner and their children were Barbara and Debbie; (f) John, born 1876, married Eliza Lanter. Their child was Nina Lee, born 1908; (g) Lee, born 1878, married Marie Scheef. Their children: (i) Elmer married Marjorie Cox. Daughter Carolyn married a Mr. Hickman and moved to Clay County; (ii) Marie, married a Mr. Ussery, moved to Kansas; (iii) Everett (farmer), married Lida Wallis; (iv) John; (v) Jim (farmer); (vi) Lora (an R.N.), married and moved to Texas; (vii) Glen, married and moved to Nodaway County; and (viii) Dixie (an R.N.); (h) Louise, born 1879, married Thomas Williams. Moved to Kansas; (i) Giles Adams, born 1881, died 1946, married Cordia Elizabeth Geer. Their children: (i) Giles Rudolf (educator), born 1909, died 1992, married Virginia Brenner. Children: (1) Douglas B. (attorney), born 1942, died 1992, married Diza Pepper. Son, Jonathan, born 1975, died 1997; and (2) Roger Alan (Doctor of Pharmacy), born 1947, died 2000, married Elizabeth Bailey, daughter, Elizabeth. Son, Daniel (lives in North Carolina); and (j) Marjorie Elizabeth (educator), born 1911, married Lester Aikmus in 1939.

Junius Wabsey Eskridge, born 1841, died 1933. He married Mary Elizabeth Perdee in 1874. She was born 1848 and died in 1937. Their children were (a) William – married, no children; (b) Mattie Alice, married a Mr. Layson. Son, Robert John Layson, lived in Hawaii and died in 2001; and (c) Vernon.

Mary E. Eskridge, born 1839, married James Adams in 1870. Their daughter, Lillie, married a Mr. Richards, lived in Oklahoma.

Thomas K. Eskridge, born 1847, died 1889, and married Louisa Bane in 1876.

Ann Elizabeth, born 1848, married David Scott Jones in 1871. They had one son.

The only Eskridges living at present in Platte County are (1) James Eskridge, Dearborn; (2) James’ son, Chris Eskridge, Dearborn; (3) Lucille Eskridge Purvis, Platte City; and (4) Marjorie Eskridge Aikmus, Kansas City North.
