From Jim Hammond: In Laura Hammond's document, for example, I'm fairly certain that her claim of lineage prior to Job No. 1 is not right. I just haven't seen any documentary evidence to support it, and she didn't provide any. And probably when such documents are posted on the web, they should carry some such disclaimer that some of the claims are not supported by documentary evidence.
From Amy Gilreath: Just want to correct this one thing from Laura Hammond:
Samuel Hammond sold all his property including his household equipment - pots & pans, his mare, 29 head of hogs, etc and moved to NC in 1767. [See Fairfax Co., VA Deed Book G, p. 282, 22 Sept. 1767]. Tories had nothing to do with it ...

Colonel William Presley
M, #3759, b. 1608, d. after 12 December 1656
William Presley,[1] Gentleman, the immigrant, was born about 1608 in England. He was the second Burgess from Northumberland and represented this county in the Assembly November 1647. Nothing is positively known of William Presely's ancestry. He was recognized as a man of ability and high character.[2]
William Presley may have come to "Chicakawane alias Northumberland" with Colonel John Mottrom.[2] Mr. William Presly recorded a grant of 1,150 acres of land in Northumberland, County, Virginia, in 1649.
: Mr. William Presly, 1150 acs. Northumberland Co., 14 Oct. 1649, p. 186. Lying on Potomeck Riv. .... Trans. of 23 pers: [incl] Wm. Presly, Jane his wife, Wm. Presly, Payle (or Paule) Presly, Peter Presly.[3]
Another 100 acres was recorded for Wm. Presley, Gent., in Northumberland County on 29 October 1650.[3]
He was a justice of the County Court from 1650 to 1652; he was sheriff in February of 1653-54; he was churchwarden in 1665; and he was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1647-48 and 1651-52.[4] [5]
William married Jane (Newman) Presley about 1630 in England.[2]
William's will dated August 15, 1656 was proven January 20, 1656/57 in Northumberland County, Virginia.[5] He refers to his deceased wife and names as heirs sons William Presly, Peter Presly, grandchild Wm. Presly [son of William]. Peter Presly is named executor of his estate and his brother William Presly is appointed guardian of Peter until Peter comes of age at 21.[6]

William is named in the will of his father, William Presley, dated August 15, 1656 and proven January 20, 1656/57 in Northumberland County, Virginia. The will refers to William's deceased wife Jane and names as heirs sons William Presly, Peter Presly, grandchild Wm. Presly [son of William]. Peter Presly is named executor of his estate and his brother William Presly is appointed guardian of Peter until Peter comes of age at 21.
In 1657, William Presly of Northumberland County is administrator of the estate of Col. John Mottrom, possibly his father-in-law.[4]
William Presley was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses from Northumberland County in 1661-68, 1670-77, 1680-82.[5].

Occupation | | Burgess. William2 Presley, (William1) was a justice of Northum- berland County and a burgess during the long Assembly 1662- 1676, and afterwards till his death about 1685. He is remem- bered for his rather quaint sayings during Bacon's Rebellion. One of the grievances leading to those disturbances was Berke- ley's continuing the same Assembly for fourteen years, without an election (1662-1676). At last yielding to the public com- plaints, he called a new Assembly. At its meeting in June, 1676, some one moved to invite the governor to send two of the coun- cil to sit with the committee on Indian affairs. This was objected to, and in reply a member urged that this was the usual method of procedure. Whereupon "the old Assembly-man," Mr. Presley, arose, and in "a blundering manner" said "Tis true it had been customary, but if we have any bad customs amongst us, we are come here to mend them," which set the House to laughing. Presley considered the custom a bad one, as it was tantamount to having spies present in the committee.
After Bacon's death, Sir William Berkeley hung so many of his followers that the Assembly which met in February, 1677, begged him to desist, and Mr. Presley on his coming back home to Northumberland remarked to his colleague, Thomas Matthew, of Cherry Point, who wrote for Lord Oxford an interesting ac- count of Bacon's Rebellion, that "he believed the governor would have hanged half the country if we had let him alone."6,7,1 |
Misc | | William Presleys. William Presly had a son by the same name and it is extremely difficult in searching the records to determine in the period prior to the elder's death to which William a reference is. William Presly received a patent in Northumberland County1 |
